If you've searched for years, then it's safe to assume it's not a simple edit, and that it hasn't been done. You'll have to look into the code of the game (via hex editor) to do so yourself.

Actually, not true. I believe Lazy Shell DOES have access to a patch that increases the coin limit, plus increasing the limits for health, etc.
