Games that you expected to suck but didn't

There are games that sound great on paper but end up sucking in execution, those are quite commonplace. But there are those that are the other way around too. This thread is for those games. So here are mine:
The Typing of the Dead (PC/DC/maybe others). It is just House of the Dead Two except you type rather than shooting. Very interesting phrases (the second most random phrases in games, only second to the bullhorn ones in parodius games), and it was actually fast paced enough to make typing fun. It's no typing tutor though, you have to type very quickly, it is the most intense typing game I've played. It also makes it even campier by replacing the guns of the characters with keyboards and strapping dreamcasts to their backs.

Space Invaders Extreme 2 (DS). I haven't played the first one, but I saw it, and thought that if a boring space invaders rehash was good enough for a sequel, it must not be that boring. I was still pretty worried though. This game is very trippy. The sound effects of your shooting and enemies being shot are synced up with the beat of cool techno music, you get powerups by shooting enemies of the same colour, you can enter fever mode for insane points, and there is a freaking bingo game on the top screen. Yes, that's write, a bingo game. The bosses are insane giant space invaders, and while there are crazy cool trippy backgrounds, the invaders still look the same, which is pretty cool.

Anyway, list yours and explain why they're good.
pikmin games. at first i thought that there would be really easy and cute, but some of the bosses and getting some of the treasure / spaceship parts was hard yet fun at the same time. i wish they would make pikmin 3 #w{:<}
Zack & Wiki. I usually hate puzzle games, but then, I realized how awesome you felt when you solved well-thought puzzles.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: Now, I didn't expect this game to flat-out suck, I was just very skeptical whether I'd like this game or not. When I bought the Wii on release day, this was the only launch title that looked appealing. I was unsure if I'd like because it I had never played a Zelda game, or an action-adventure type game for that matter, before. But after playing through the entire game, I was pleasantly surprised. The combat was fun and the dungeons were very well-designed and challenging. Plus, I found the difficulty to be at a very reasonable level.

Wario: Master of Disguise: After seeing many mixed and negative reviews for this game, I thought I'd feel the same way. I actually enjoyed this game quite a bit. The levels were huge and quite creative, and Wario's transformations were used cleverly in order to overcome some challenging puzzles.
Trauma Team (Atlus):
When I see that Derek Stiles wasn`t going to appear again, I was dissapointed, New Blood didn`t like me at all, and I was thinking the same of Trauma Team, but when I see the gameplay of the game, I was impressed, and I want it to play it... yeah, a good game indeed

I agree with this and they are making Pikmin 3. B)
It got announced last year.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days
After reading a few reviews giving it a lowish score, i though i wouldn't enjoy it. but as i wanted to play a Kingdom Hearts game, i got it anyway.
And i loved it. Its in my top 3 DS games :D
Zero Wing. People need to start playing more than the introduction.
Is that just because Ersanio just ported the intro theme?

Uh, I guess Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for the GBA.
I'd never played a game like that, but it was a really awesome Metroidvania.
Batman Arkham Asylum: i thourght it looked like a cheesy beat em up from the trailers, but holy crap i was wrong!

from the controls to the story, its an epic i will never forget
Sonic the hedgehog for the Xbox 360. Even though it was said to be horrible, I actually quite enjoyed it untile my stupid Xbox stopped playing games. >.>
I agree on:
Pikmin- Man this was amazing, and once you get the hang of it, it's so fun trying to beat your score. still haven't played Pikmin 2 though. I'll wait for the new play control one.

Kingdom hearts 358/2 days- I seriously did not believe that they could get the exact same battle style from the Ps2 games on DS, but they did. and that alone makes it awesome.

I'll add:
Elite Beat Agents- I had always seen EBA come free with some pack of DS accessories and thought, "Man, that game must suck if they're giving it out free with some accessories." When I got my R4, I tried it out for lulz, and I fell in love. It quickly beat out Rhythm Heaven as my favorite music game, due to a much better challenge and overall faster gameplay. I also like the songs in it. even YMCA.
Sonic '06 doesn't flat-out suck or anything. The problem is that there wasn't enough time to betatest everything because SEGA wanted the game out at Christmas, they weren't willing to take any more chances after Sonic X-Treme.
I can't really think of any games that quite fall into that category. However, I can think of a few games I liked that got bad reviews.

Spyro 4: Enter the Dragonfly - This one got a 2.8 on GameSpot. I think the main reason it scored so low was because of the many glitches the game had, but I was lucky enough to get a relatively non-glitchy copy, and I liked it all right. I mean, sure, it had the same problems that every Spyro game ever made had (too big of a pain in the butt to find all the bleeping dragonflies and gems), and it certainly wasn't my favorite in the series either, but it really wasn't that bad, and it only froze up three times during the entire course of the game.

Mega Man 7: I personally think SNES fans really got gypped as far as Mega Man games go. They do six for the NES, a measly ONE for the SNES, one for the Playstation/Sega Saturn (might have been a good idea to expand there, too...), and then two in the style of the NES...and Mega Man 7 doesn't exactly have the coolest bosses or any of that, if you ask me. I swear it only gets bad press because it's 16-bit, which is one of the things I actually like about it: had it been 8-bit, I might not have looked twice at it. But the game wasn't at all bad.

Mega Man 8: Ouch. This one probably gets even more bad press than 7. But you know what? Who cares?! I'm playing it right now, and I think it's great. The boss battles are challenging without being too difficult (most of them, anyway), the weapons are decent (even Water Balloon isn't that bad...it has its uses), the music is...okay, I actually didn't like the soundtrack for MM8 as much as certain other titles in the series, but Sword Man and Tengu Man's themes make up for the rest. Most of all, the gameplay was fine. The game might not have had that "classic" feeling like Mega Man 2 or 3 would have, but the point of a game is to have fun, which I did. And the lousy voice acting? If anything, it adds some unintentional humor to the game. I don't think, "Dr. Light sounds like Elmer Fudd, so this game sucks.", I think, "Haha, Dr. Light sounds like Elmer Fudd...niiice. Well, the gameplay itself is okay, so I'll live."
When you expect something to suck you normaly don't buy/play it you know...not to mention your expectation may influence your opinion about the game.

Right now I only remember having one of these experiences like 2 years ago, it was with the game "Forza 2 Motorsport" (some racing game) it came allong with my Xbox360 when I bought it, but I allways thought it would be a horrible game and it stayed on a corner untill one day I was borred and I thought "oh whathever, let's play this shit, at least it will kill some time" so I played it and I found out it wans't bad at all, allthougt it wasn't a great game either.
Zelda-Ocarina of time(This is the first Zelda game that I played)

Before I play it,I say "That game suck"

But when I play it,I say "This is a great game!"

Pikmin, i thought it was boring, but it was actually funny.
Yoshi's story, too much childish, but it was great.
Mario Party: still thought it was boring, but it is a great game.
Earth Defense Force 2017 for Xbox 360. You know all those crappy old Japanese horror movies with giant bugs and robots? EDF is that in video game form. It's just you, 50 missions (only about 6 different maps, but with lots of variations), five difficulties, 200 weapons, and lots and lots of bugs and robots. Plus, it was just a $20 budget title on release, and it's even less now.

But it's some of the most fun I've ever had with a video game. It's a really simple concept, but it's well-balanced, the weapons are absolutely amazing (even with that many of them!), and it somehow kept my interest even after 3 full playthroughs. I highly suggest you pick it up if you have a 360.

(The game does start off somewhat slow, but it really picks up later on.)
"Conker's bad fur day", "Secret of Mana" and "FF III" (Or 6, i'm confused)
I thought all three would suck, but they turned out to be the best games on consoles i know. (I leave Mario&Luigi aside of this topic)
I agree on Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. The critics sucked. So i begin to think "A KH game that sucks...) and like that, but i still wanted it. so i bought it and the first i heard was the remixed version of "Dearly Beloved" and i thought "This..this..This! is an Epic game.." I've always tought the KH series were sad, and yes i were crying some in the first game.. And i'm still playing it. Right now to be exact. My cousin and me are playing this gae together soo much. for me it's a definate 10/10..

ファイナルファンタジーVII (Final Fantasy 7) First i was like " lol.. FF.. Those games suck ass. Later on when i Bought Kingdom Hearts 1 I saw that Square Enix made that game. And i thought Cloud Was really cool. At that time i couldn't read english so, I went out on the european page of Square Enix and Found Final Fantasy 7. It had Cloud in it and i had to play it. So i bought it the PC port of it. And i'm still playing this game. I'm serious. I love this game. And the song "One Winged Angel" A game i will always remember as "The Heart of Turn Based RPG's.." A definate 10/10 and one of the best RPG's I've playes.
