Ha, why am I making this? Because the previous thread of my hack is 3 days over a year old. The hack itself is WAY over a year old by now...
So, what is this hack? Well, it's my first hack. It's a vanilla hack. When I started this project, I wanted it to have creative never before seen in vanilla hack stuff. I claim to be the Father of Map16 Trickery- that is, I invented the art of Map16 trickery, which is playing around with SMW's tiles to come up with something new. I invented this in my hack's first level(a link to it is coming up). Now, another special thing about my hack- yes, it's vanilla, but also, I DIDN'T USE ANY EXGFX. That means no copy-pasting tiles to make stuff in YY-CHR like GFX combos/decorations, simply Lunar Magic to make this.
Now, for this special occasion, what am I going to show? THE EXACT SAME LEVELS I SHOWED ON THE FIRST POST OF THE FIRST THREAD.
I know what you're thinking; "WAT." Well, you'll see. The levels have a lot of new things:
old version of level 1-1
New version of 1-1:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PRfAHkyrLWU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PRfAHkyrLWU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Originally titled "Seashell Shores 1-1", this was one of the first levels I made for my hack, "Back to the Classics", over a year ago. It's now titled Seacliff Stretch, and as you can see, it's definitely got some changes from it's previous version. In fact, though, this level looks (design-wise) somewhat MORE close to how it was originally supposed to, thanks to knowledge gained over my hacking experience as to Sprite limit options(or whatever they're called). Yes, I've included quite a few new cool things(mostly the new BG) with knowledge acquired over my hacking career so far.
old version of level 1-2
New version of 1-2:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/s3d9ynsaLN4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/s3d9ynsaLN4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
This level was originally called "Seashell Shores 1-2" when I made it over a year ago. Now it's just "Seashell Shores". The level is mostly the same, but has a new palette and background w/ gradients(for the sky and the sea). So yeah, enjoy ^_^
Now, screenies of above levels for video-haters:
1-1

coins.

this level has a wide variety of enemies, i.e. wiggler.

I love how those clouds look for some reason.

Now, if you're curious, here's how the BG looks in LM:

yeah, I'm gonna redo it, as there's too much islands and not enough open sea. honestly does anyone see that much/big islands EVER?
1-2

Now, a shower of random screenies from the game. Keep in mind they're very outdated(the levels AND the screenies), and I've yet to polish the levels with things like BG gradients and new palettes, etc.:

This hack has many surreal areas. Palettes are a big part of this hack.

More realistic levels abound as well. Gimmicks are another big part of this hack.
Now, I think that's enough to keep you going for awhile. If you want to spoil even more of the hack for yourself, be my guest: a link to my YouTube account is in my signature, where you can find plenty of rather outdated footage of my hack.
Comments and criticism would be greatly appreciated. I really want to know what you all think of this over-a-year old hack. It's nearing a release, once I tie up some loose ends. Anyways, thanks for visiting!

I never saw the original topic, so this is all new, but this looks really good! Nice work with the Map16. But in the first level, I noticed a lot of the blocks with multiple coins in them. I think you might want to change that.

This looks like a nicely-done vanilla hack. Your level design seems pretty solid. Reminds me of Zildjian's work.
I also like how you shaped the BG hills in level 1. Gives them a more natural look.
My only small gripe would be your use of different colored outlines on some of the objects...
...such as the blue outline on these clouds...

...and the orange outline on these throw blocks...

...I think those outlines make the objects blend in too much with the BG and make them slightly hard to make out. Not a major problem.

Good. Now the remains of my noob posts in your old thread are no longer going to be seen. Anyways, this hack is amazing. What you can do makes me want to believe this is loaded up as a chocolate hack. But it's not. This is incredible! I feel like I want to spice up my levels in Mario's Epic Adventure because of this hack. I can't wait for it to be finished! I looks incredible! Keep up the great work! You make me want to experiment with map16 now.

I've been keeping an eye on this hack, and all I can say is that it looks really nice. I love how you use the map 16 enough to make it look good, but not enough to make it look just overused and just plain weird. the only things I find kind of bad are that on the first level, you copied pallet 2's bluish darker color over to pallet 5 so that the bushes on the ledges look nice, while you should of done the opposite, as some of the other things that use pallet 5 look awkward with the blue, especially when the mid dark color of pallet 5's green is still the original. the other one is this

the bushes are kinda spammed here and look kind of bad. otherwise, I can't wait for this hack. by the way, I'd love to be a beta tester.

This is an amazing vanilla hack!
There is only one thing wrong and that the status bar palette is bad in one of the screenshots.

This is outstanding. There is, however, minor cutoff in the OW to the left of the cliff.(first video).

Thankyou Yeah, I'll fix up the amount of coins you can get in that level.

Thanks :> Surprisingly, I sort of based the hills off what I do with level design concerning slopes.

Ah, there's a reason for that. I usually wouldn't do that(although I do like how the clouds look) but palette 7 is the gradient for the water(since the water gradient is a bit different than the sky gradient for a reason I don't feel like explaining). All those objects use pal. 7. I can actually just toss out the whole "water gradient has dif. pal. than sky gradient", but in some levels it'll be inevitable...

I beg to differ here. I would've given the whole level a custom palette, but I liked the SMW feel that the original palette gave off. Pasting the bushes colors on the FG looses that feel. And actually, it doesn't make pal. 5 objects look weird. Pipes look fine, bushes look fine, and vines look fine. And you're wrong about the last part, the mid-color of the bush's 3 colors IS changed. I made a gradient between the blue-green(which is the darkest color) and the lightest green.

I might fix that, I personally thought it was neat looking.

Thanks again. Wuh-ho-ho, I'm not looking for beta testers yet. Thanks for the offer, though.

Thanks! The status bar palette will be different for each world, so W1 is orange, W2 is green, etc. I haven't done this for every level yet, though. Oh, and if you mean the pink level, I haven't changed that, yet.

Thanks! Uh, could you point it out? I have no idea what you're talking about(I see no cutoff).

Spud spud spud! Haihai! Kay, so I've been following this hack for, well a while. It looks more and more amazing every time you update it. ( which isn't that often :( ) I have one question though, you said it was near completion, yes? When exactly do you think it will be completed?
and you better let me beta test!

Zildzildzildy! What's up? So, I thought it was near completion, but it seems I stopped working on it for quite awhile. Also, I barely have any time to work on it during the summer, since I have divorced parents and I'm at my other house during the summer(except for weekends). Besides that, I need to finish the last submap's OW events and polish stuff for about a month. Then I plan on adding custom music, and I'm good to go!

Ohyes, definitely

I agree to an extent. I mean, it's vanilla, and I used his method of fake HDMA :>

man why haven't I posted yet
Man, this hack looks excellent! At the time I first saw this, I was amazed at the fact that such amazing things can be done with vanilla!
I would say that you've improved a lot, but that would mean you weren't good at all! That's the exact opposite, you've started out great and you're still going! I especially like the use of slope tiles for the bushes, it's very creative!
This hack is lookin' great, Spuddy!
I gotta beta test this ;-;

Ha, thanks RTL
And of course you can beta test if you want
I'll prolly round up all the vanilla masters(Zildjian, RTL, SyStemkraSh, etc.) and ask 'em to betatest.. prolly Kristian if he wants to as well, as he's been my #1 fan for awhile.

Your palettes are awesome! They always seem to amaze me in some way. And the level design seems to be a plus too. I can barley even nitpick anything in this hack.
Also if you still have room for beta testing, could I be a beta tester? (Whoa, seems like a lot of people want to beta test too).
Anyway good luck on the rest of the hack, Spud!

Yeah, you can beta-test, too. I mean, more help is good :>
I'm surprised you're the first one to point out palettes, I thought that was one of the best parts of this hack.

can't wait to play this, but I just spotted this screenshot

was this inspired by WTH? it looks cool. also love the looks of that building level. very detailed.
EDIT: of course I'm on your beta tester "list" right? a big suggestion for a beta test version is to have sort of a debug type thing where you have a level where you can get a cape. you know, to make sure you can't fly over anything.

@Spinjumper: sure you're on my list. And no, that isn't inspired by WTH, I came up with it myself. Thanks, though
The cape won't even appear in my hack, though.

Wow Spud, these screens look great! I've always been a fan of your vanilla work, and I see that you've managed to perfect it even more. I'm really looking forward to playing this. Keep up the good work.
