Tip: When making your overworld, mix the terrain up! Angled land and multiple colors looks much more interesting than square land and plain colors.

Random question, but I'm curious, what sprite did you base Luigi off of? I instantly figured it out it was custom by the limited animation, and it's definitely an enemy (I messed around in Lunar Magic to see if it could kill Mario/Mario could kill it by jumping on it), but I can't quite think of a sprite with two tiles worth of graphics that dies in one hit like that.

I know, completely insane question, I'm just curious to know how that level works.

I based it off the Bomb Koopa that came with the original Sprite Tool. It was the first 16x32 sprite I could find that would be a good fit for Luigi. I set the "Process While Off Screen" property to have Luigi keep moving even if you moved off-screen.
Oh, that's interesting. I've never used the original Bomb Koopa sprite, so it explains why I couldn't recognise it.

Oh, and am I right in guessing that the Luigi and Boo race levels work by detecting if a sprite has touched the custom block and teleporting the player if so?

Yep, both Luigi and the Boo races work in a similar manner. The blocks detect whether the sprite has touched it and teleports back to the beginning if it has.
nice i played through it and it is awsome but how did you get the luigi sprite???

I already explained it on the first post of this page.

As for the next hack, I initially had the idea to make it a completely puzzle based hack. Mario would need to use objects and enemies in the environment to overcome different obstacles. Mario couldn't die: if he fell in a pit, he got pushed back to the surface, and if he got hit by an enemy, he only got knocked back. It would've taken place in an icy underworld setting. That's where the Keytastrophe and Final Destination mix came into play. I started experimenting and almost finished a level, but a lot of things didn't work how I wanted, so the task seems too daunting. Looks like I need to think of a different concept.

Can't wait to see how the new Hack turns out! Good luck!

Me too!
Speaking of the new hack, I settled on another concept. It's still very similar to my previous idea, I just needed time to think it through and come up with a more interesting setup. The next hack will be a departure from traditional style SMW hacks. One of my favorite genres of games other than platforming is adventure. This new hack will explore a similar style. Not to a tee, of course, as I'm still using SMW as a base. However, it will contain adventure game elements, such as using objects in the environment to overcome obstacles, and talking with characters to guide you along the way. I'd still say it'll be a mix between Keytastrophe and Final Destination.

One other note. In many adventure games, the main character can't die. The same thing will hold true for this upcoming hack. ;)

I've already started getting some things set up in a ROM. I should have a teaser of sorts to show off soon. Stay tuned.
i played through this and was surprised! it was a lot better than i expected! i absolutely deserves to be featured. great job jacob!
Super Mario Underworld...

Looks nice, you might want to make the bones duller so they look like they have being in the ground for awhile. Also that purple dude looks like that randor guy is someones hack :P

Sure, I can do that.

I recall seeing that Randor character after Roth surfaced. I don't care, though.

I assume that's going to be the name?

Looks... Nice, but I can't really be sure considering there's only one pic.

(notices the purple dude)

Uhhhhhh, Roth looks more like Sniggerbobble, not Randor.

Whatever, this is not a thread for the DDD.
