Super Mario Underworld Finale

Standard

Episode 2 out now!

Good day, ladies and gentlemen. Are you feeling jipped from the cheap ending of Hack? Fear not, a follow-up, entitled Super Mario Underworld, is not far behind. What type of gameplay does this hack feature? What type of setting does the hack take place in? Instead of talking in this obnoxious promotional voice, I will let this teaser video do the talking...

Video

Special thanks to MidiGuy, who composed the wonderful track in this video, and Iceguy, who will be making the "Reset" sprite.
It looks all right at the moment, but I can't help but notice how much the character in front of the gate resembles Sniggerbobble. Is that intentional?
After reading other posts, Roch is the purple huy in the video, sorry if I splet his name wrong and he appeared before sniggerbobble. Either way I think the level looks nice. I like the goombas speech.
My character, Roth, was made by Broozer long before I ever saw that Sniggerbobble character (he was in SMW2+3 as well). Don't the "devious ones" have a history of copying from other hacks? In any event, I don't really care.
Hmm. It doesn't really catch the same feeling that Hack did, but it's interesting nonetheless. Also, beautifully creepy music choice.

... I'm pretty sure the "Devious Ones" (Chikane and Assbee broke off from TDFC, btw) draw their own graphics.
Good fucking bye.
Don't see a big similarity between Roth and Sniggerbobble to be honest. Sure, they're both evil wizard types, but that's a fairly standard type of character in a fantasy game, and they just don't look much a like. Roth has a more traditional wizard hat, Sniggerbobble has some kind of cloak like the Grim Reaper, and the art styles in general are just completely miles apart:

All a big coincidence if I say so myself.

Still, this hack looks excellent. Not my kind of hack much, but I'm impressed by how Mario could stack the skulls on top of each other and what not to solve a puzzle, and the art style looks pretty nice. Oh, and the music... what's the music in the video anyway?

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.

I know, but I requested the specific graphics from Broozer (I told him exactly how it should look) long before I ever saw Sniggerbobble. I didn't copy anyone if that's what anyone is getting at, and I don't care if they copied me or made something similar (I didn't make the graphics anyway). Anyway, I didn't start this thread to begin any "he copied me" drama, so let's please move on.
Meh, I don't really care that much either anyways. I was just pointing it out. :/
Good fucking bye.
By looking at one of the vid's quotes ('Press L to reset if you mess up') I'm guessing this will be a dark gloomy puzzle hack with similar systems to PMTTYD's Pit of 100 Trials.
Koopinator-It's a hack inspired off of Mario's Keytastrophe (puzzles), Final Destination (dark, gloomy setting), and adventure games (Talking to characters, objects you collect, unable to die).

... Ummm, is this hack gonna be linear or nonlinear?
Good fucking bye.

I'm not too sure. The level ideas I've come up with so far are generally linear in structure itself, but non-linearity comes in to play collecting items and solving puzzles in different spots.
Will there be boss fights etc. or will it be a simple puzzle styled hack without boss battles?
The first thing that got my attention was the atmosphere in that area, really mysterious and creppy. The title of the hack really lives up to what I just saw, nice pun! You've always been good at explaining things trough NPC's, something that is important to avoid any frustration. This puzzle was something new to me, I've never seen any hacks with block that can be placed on top of eachother, really neat concept that can be used to create many types of puzzles.

Thats all I can think of. I'm looking forward to helping you with this prosject too!
Thank you, Uhrix! Of course, your help is always appreciated. #w{=)}

Maybe, but if so, there won't be much. This type of hack won't be the perfect fit for intense boss fights as Mario can't get harmed.
Maybe you could somehow do something so that if a boss "kills" you, you're knocked out of the arena, but don't actually die (sense=zero). I dunno, bosses have always felt like a... Staple to me in Mario games.

Right, they are a staple to Mario games. But I'm just not sure if they'll fit in with this particular hack. I am trying to do something very different here, so I don't want to stick in a boss just for the sake of it. If I can find a sensible way to fit in a boss, I'll do it. But right now, I'm focusing more on the puzzle elements.
I see what you mean there, but I'm a bit too used to seeing bosses in Mario games. Not saying to just throw some random boss in for the sake of it, I'm just saying if you find a reason to have a boss somewhere that fits, use it.

... Do you plan on releasing any demos, or is this too early to be asking something like that?
Good fucking bye.

No, this won't be a large-scale hack like SMW2+3, but it will at least be longer than Hack.
I like the way that you can stack objects on top of each other like in SMB2.
Is this a one-level hack?
