Toad's World Release!

Standard

Finally, after 4 years since the hack has been started working on I'm proud to say it has come to an end and I'm finally able to present you this beautiful hack called Toad's World.

Download the full release here.

Edit: Updated the link. Please re-download.

For some reason secret exits did not work, which has been fixed.
I'm surprised I'm the first one to reply... This subforum definitely needs more attention.

Anyway, I remember playing the demo of this a few years ago and liking it a lot, especially the unique graphical style. Looking at the screenshots, the graphics seem to have gotten even better since then. The level design didn't seem too exciting in the demo, though that may have improved by now as well. I guess I should actually play the full version before judging it - and guess what, I'm gonna do that now. :P

Okay, here's my opinion, off the bat:

Basically, it's a great hack, but it's just a little too easy and really, really short from what I can see. Okay, maybe that's because I'm good at Mario hacks, but I didn't really find anything challenging outside the castle levels and certain boss battles, and the game had maybe, four secret exits across the whole game (one switch palace, two secret side rooms, and one shortcut to a later level, along with one I forgot which is required for progress Choco Island 3 style.

The bosses and ASM are good, although it froze after one of the boss battles for me, and I had to skip a certain level with Game Genie codes. The first boss was awesome, being a really cool ghost boss with teleportation and such like, second was just quite boring and too easy, the Chomp Shark chase was clever... and then the three bosses were easy to find sprites by Sonikku, which made them quite... well, underwhelming to battle (Balrog, Toroko, Night Spirit). You seemed to use a lot from Brutal Mario after that, with Xanbie (the weird fire bird head thing from an early castle) and a boss from Mega Man in some of the later levels. The final boss, a weird wizard looking guy was okay, but I thought I was gonna get to fight that Yoshi's Island Bowser you showed off a long time back.

Fortress wise, it was a bit dull. Okay, one boss was Boom Boom (carol's version I think, which is weird, because you do have the ASM skill to make your own equivalent, which would be more impressive), another was a ground pound Koopa, another a Blargg boss and finally, a Big Boo boss in the chapel level. Nothing remarkable, indeed, apart from Boom Boom, they're all just standard stuff from the sprites section with basic rooms and attacks.

Level design wise, it was excellent fun, with a new twist in every level. However, it was a bit too linear, and it never really got very difficult at any point. Another two worlds would have done great to be honest, especially with a final level count of less than 60.

The overworld was great, with graphics from various games (I remember Minish Cap graphics in one section). However, it passed a bit quick, and you never really get to explore enough of it.

Graphics were mind blowing. Every world (and more precisely, every castle, fort and ghost house) had new, ultra detailed graphics taken from the likes of New Super Mario Bros, Yoshi's Island DS and all manner of RPGs. Personally, I'd love to use one of the backgrounds, they all looked fantastic.

Music was cool throughout. Can't say much more, it was just great and without any issues.

Oh, and I see you took a lot from VIP 5. Okay, I'm a hypocrite, I use a fair amount of the stuff myself, but with the Zingers, Squawks sprite and on/off invisibility gimmick, it all looked a bit like I'd seen it before.

Would I recommend this hack to people? Yes, it's fantastic. It'd be great for a Youtube Let's Play series to be honest, if someone like raocow was interested. But it's too short and linear, and took me about an hour to complete in total.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
Currently moderating this (just finished the fourth castle, which officially has the best gimmick ever), and it's definitely one of the best hacks I've played in a long time. The levels all look wonderful graphics wise, and the level design itself isn't all that bad either. I've found my usual bunch of minor issues that I'll be back with once I'm done (tell me if you want me to PM them to you instead of posting them in the thread) and that you may or may not want to fix in some form of update, but nothing gamebreaking so far and definitely nothing that would be enough to reject a hack of this calibre.

Wow. I am definitely enjoying these screenshots, this hack is definitely one of the best hacks out there. No doubt, I will play this and possibly make some videos.

The graphics you used are stunning, I've never seen anyone use those graphics in any hack before. I really like the screenshots of world 8, they look really awesome and dark. I like dark things.

Infact, I am going to play it right now. I'll possibly write more when I've played through it a bit.
...what am I supposed to do in the Shooting Star level? I got to the top, and all that happens is that when I go too far above the screen, I revert to normal Toad and fall to my death...

EDIT: Well then. Seems like there was a goal sphere on the platform above the top of the screen... You might want to put that where the player can actually see it.

EDITAGAIN: New question. How do I get the normal (?) exit of Frozen Valley 2? Both the pipe and the pit at the end of the level lead to the Frozen Valley 3 exit room.

Why did you have the hack removed?

netcvb for Admin 2011
netcvb-Uh, no he didn't.

I've played only one level, so I can't really say anything yet, but INCREDIBLY nice graphics. Great work on those.
Good fucking bye.

Really awesome hack so far, although I've only played the first world. Looks to me like ghettoyouth did more than just level design though, as world one's boss is pretty much a gfx swap of Stranded's world one boss.

Oh yeah, your overworlds are also amazing.

There was probably a bug in the first submission, and he uploaded a new one.

Think before you ask.

Ghettoyouth only worked on parts of the 2nd world actually, FPI worked on the 3rd world while I did all other levels on my own and yes, that ghost is a slightly modified version from ghettoyouth's Stranded boss.

Also, graphics were all ripped by me, nobody else contributed graphics or even music to this hack but me.
Okay, that was my issue... this hack crashes after the rabbit from Cave Story is beaten... is there meant to be a second stage or something?

Oh, and bar the final boss, I think this is most of the bosses in this hack, right?

I've been playing through this hack, and it's been a lot of fun! Found a bug: the mid-point in Castle 4 didn't work for me. I decided to tough it out and not resort to state-saving where the checkpoint was. Getting through the entire castle and beating the boss in one go was pretty rough. Good fun!
you know that it's me that typed this because of my signature right here
Heh, this was the first hack I ever broke my rule about playing locked hacks that I wasn't utterly disappointed that I did. It was definitely an easy hack, but not so easy that it was just "RUN AND JUMP!!!", making it feel like an actual game for once instead of a game created by some insane kid who's played Mario too much and thinks it's too easy so he has to make it harder (i.e. almost every single hacker ever). I never even considered using save states for this hack (Not to say I never died, because I did), and wasn't forced to get a game over because of that, which was definitely refreshing. The levels were actually very well designed as well, even though you did seem to use YI graphics and Kirby music a bit much. Overall a very entertaining hack, I can truly say that I enjoyed it. Good job.

wonderful, Ice Man.

be sure to let FPI know that you've released a complete version of the hack so that he can mention it on his web site.

another neat feature nobody else mentioned but me: no save prompt when beating castles, fortresses or ghost houses. game automatically remembers how many levels you've beaten - similar to the "autosave" feature of the SMW2:YI (yoshi's island) game when clearing levels in that game. cool!
How are you supposed to beat the Blargg boss? It's driving me mad!
Spin jump on it to damage it, and I think you need to do this three times to beat the Blargg boss.

I'm not sure if it's fair judging the game by what I have played from it so far (up to Deep Blue Sea) but anyway, here goes.

I'll start off with the positive aspects. The graphics are absolutely top-notch and lovely. I have rarely seen such nice graphic sets in a hack. The fact that some of these (maybe all of them?) are coming from DS games makes it even more awesome. Good job on this part.

Also kudos to you for the neat extra effects like different scrolling settings in the backgrounds. Many backgrounds can be enhanced with additional ASM and I like how you took advantage of that. And awesome pause menu. Very unique (and finally a status bar that doesn't distract me from the main game with its innumerable amount of counters).

Now to get to the more negative points. Let's kick off with the level design. So far, it's nothing stunning. The levels feel bland and at some point, I have the feeling that I'm going through the same parts over and over until I see the goal sphere. It's too repetetive for my tastes. And sometimes it even feels too empty, it's like something's missing, but I don't know what it is... maybe it's the lack of additional decorations.
Alright, it's not easy to work with these insane sets - I don't even know if you had any space left for extra stuff or if there was anything else you could have added - so I don't count that as a huge minus.

The music doesn't really fit my taste as well. Some tunes work well with the level themes, but most of them sound simply out of place. Admitted, I'm a bit biased towards custom music as I'm not a big fan of it (most tracks just don't work with Mario games, in my opinion). Nothing else to say on this point.

Overall, this hack doesn't meet my expectations so far. I might continue to check out the later levels, maybe some surprises are still waiting for me. :D

Don't take this post too seriously, these are only my thoughts and seeing the other responses, I'm probably one out of a hundred or so who dislikes it.

Though, if there's one other thing I have to thumbs up for, then it's your dedication to finish this entire thing. Well done, nice to see that you sticked to your project and hope you also had fun making it. :)

I know about it - I just haven't had the time yet to update the website - or to play the finished hack for that matter. :/
