Is there any sort of list of things to avoid when building a level? I was already told that Kaizo traps and stacked munchers are to be avoided, and the Tip bar at the top suggests avoiding blind jumps and Yoshi coins near goalposts. I checked the FAQ but didn't see anything.

Try to avoid long stretches of flat ground, as well as copypasting and repeating certain sections of a level (i.e. hill, cliff, hill, cliff, etc.)

Avoid mass clumps of enemies on one screen, and no enemies for ten screens.

Avoid building levels entirely out of cement blocks.

A good way to know what not to do is to read Hack Removal Logs. The old one is in the Display Case, the newer one is in Moderation of Hacks and Files, and the Hacks subforum contains brand-new removals.
Also, try looking at this tutorial.
Things to avoid:

- Floating or Stacked Munchers (tm)
- P-Switch puzzles without reset pipes or other means of retrying without having to kill yourself
- Long stretches of flat ground
- Clusters of any block, especially cement and brown used blocks
- Numerous invisible coin blocks or invisible block sprites
- Too many sprites on one screen
- Goal tapes in vertical levels
- Time limits such as 100 or less
- Glitched sprites (MAKE SURE THEY ARE USING THE CORRECT GFX SLOTS)
- Map16 editing of pages 0, 1, and 2.
- Sprite spam, such as Stars or power-ups
- Exit enabled pipes with no destination
- Objects stretching below the screen area
- Yoshi Coins on sub-screen boundaries
- Kaizo traps
- Blind jumps (falling from above)
- 000 Time limit
- Enemies falling from above
- Enemies hiding in priority enabled tiles

Death Traps. Avoid them because I think it's instant decline. Aswell as roms.

Also check out the Hack Submission Guidelines found in this thread.
It is a list of criteria that have to be fulfilled for your hack to be able to pass the moderation stage.
Another thing to remember is not to have horrible pallettes. Just stick with the orignals until you think you can make good ones. However some of SMW pallettes shouldnt be used for different tilesets, such as the standard grassland pallette for the castle tileset, it looks ugly.
No pink or neon yellow should be in your palette...lulz.
