It's time to finally introduce what will be, to the best of my knowledge, the first completed kaizo hack of Yoshi's Island. This is something I've been working on for over a year, and it will comprise of 10 (mostly very long) levels; essentially world 1, plus an intro level and a bonus level if you manage to get 100% on levels 1-8.

My aim has been to create an intelligent kaizo hack which is visually appealing, and definitely not a Y.I. version of your typical Youtube SMW hack. Beating this hack will rely on great skill, logic and knowledge of the game, as well as the classic qualities needed to beat a kaizo hack; persistence and a sense of humour. I'd say that it is for the most part a fair hack, though with lashings of unfairness (and cheap kills) simply for effect and for humour value. The hack is not just about difficult jumps; there are many mazes and puzzles to deal with, along with five morphing sections, a skiing part and various other challenges. You'll find a mixture of kaizo versions of challenges found in the original game (for instance, the chomp chase) and completely original ideas. There are also two vastly edited boss fights, and an edited Salvo mini boss.

In order to enjoy the hack to the full you'll need to be fairly experienced in playing Y.I.; if you can't beat Kamek's Revenge, you may find it too hard. But I would invite you all to try and play it anyway! That said, it's not equivalent to something like Springboard and Shells hack or Pit of Despair in terms of difficulty, it is more like the original kaizo SMW world or Cool or Cruel. There is only one part of the game which I need slowdown to complete, and that is on the bonus level, though there are a couple of other places where it is very useful!

I have completed all the levels (except the intro level) but I am currently doing the final touches to the hack, so it is not quite ready for release. I haven't bothered with a demo, I am just going to release the final version. It's not something I am working on everyday, but I would expect it to definitely be ready in time for the new year. Basically I just thought I would whet the appetite of those of you that would be interested in such a hack. Here are some screenshots, but they do not give away what I view as the best parts of the game, which I would like to remain a surprise.

Fuzzies were simply made for kaizo!

You need the duck to complete this section of the level, so you must make a safe path for her. It's scrolling, too.

Keys may not be a good thing in this level

Had to be done! Level 5 is a homage to kaizo SMW hacks, and you play a large chunk of the level as Baby Mario.

Level 6: A Night in the Jungle

The Snow Palace

I would also like to make some videos of the levels but whenever I record in ZSNES, when I play it back it shows that I've died at points when I did not die whilst playing the game! Very strange. If anyone can help me with this or tell me how to record it, I would be eternally grateful (I am not the most adept person at computers or technical stuff).

Thanks and I would welcome any comments.

Wow, this actually looks really nice! I've never seen a full YI Kaizo hack before, and although I don't normally play Kaizo hacks, I'll give this a try!

Also, when recording, are you using Rewind/Fast Forward?

Thank you for the compliment! I'm not using rewind or fast forward but I am using savestates. At first I was using multiple savestates and I thought that might be causing the problem, but alas it does it when only using the one savestate as well.

Another screenshot:

Mario is grabbed by a frog (you have no control over this) and you must give chase. (You can't see Yoshi as he's just been hit).
Wow, that's a quite creative idea, but the BG palette is not eye-pleasing!
*Edit* Needlenose!

Yes, I thought it would be somewhat controversial. Personally, I like it, and it is in a level which is meant to look weird and freaky.
I agree with Yoshis Fan, it's a very creative idea. I think you should maybe edit the palette to make the pink colours a little darker, but other than that, good work.

I'm glad you're looking forward to it! I have finished making all the levels, at the moment I am just going through them one by one and making some changes where I see fit. Then I need to edit the message box text and the level names. Then I need to make an intro level. Then I just need to test it all, and I am pretty much done. I am definitely hoping for this to be released by January 2011, but it may be sooner depending on how much time I have to work on it between now and then.
I have a question...

Is this Kaizo YI hack designed to be possible without tool-assistance if you have an extreme amount of patience and skill (the way the original Kaizo 1 and 2 are), or does it force tool-assistance by having long stretches without checkpoints and/or required frame-precision (like most Kaizo hacks)?

Well, it is designed to be played with savestates but not slowdown, although there are two places where slowdown is useful in level 8, and one place where it is actually necessary in the bonus level.

With patience and skill I'm sure you could get through the first level without savestates, and most of the second. There aren't very many places requiring frame-precision until you get to the last three levels really (and even then only in a few places), but still the nature of some of the challenges necessitates savestates. Namely because it will often take a long time to work out how to deal with the task in front of you.

Have you played Cool or Cruel? Because I like to compare it to that in terms of difficulty. Most of the challenges in Cool or Cruel are fair and do not require frame precision, but the challenges are so hard and unique that you would not want to go without savestates.
I've never played Cool or Cruel. But if this hack is like Cool or Cruel, I know that it's not at all designed to be played without savestates.

(Cool or Cruel is what would fit into the category of long stretches of required precision... times (insert large number here) or so.)

I was referring to, as I said, the original Kaizo 1/2. Or Kamek's Revenge 5-8. (That level is basically Kaizo, since in addition to insanely high difficulty, you're given very small amounts of eggs (if you don't use items) and are forced to die if you don't do things in a certain order (and always restart from the first checkpoint if you do die). But as it never requires frame-precision, it's certainly possible unassisted. (The YIKR2 version is modified to be much more fair to the player, mainly by adding egg blocks and making backtracking possible. It's still at a very high difficulty though.))

Anyway, if this hack is anywhere near as well-designed as Cool or Cruel, it's sure to be impressive. Looking forward to whenever someone uploads a TAS/TAW of it after the release.

You're right, it is definitely not designed to be playable without savestates, though Level 1 and Level 2 up to the midring would be possible (albeit very hard) without them. It is much harder than Kamek's Revenge, but of course it is a different type of game entirely. If I work out how to make a video I will upload a brief taster on here.
I've heard snes9x-rr (available from TASVideos) has the least chance of desyncing, since it's designed for TASes. (I've never used it myself, though.)

(Random note for anyone who hasn't used Snes9x before: v1.52 is incompatible with certain aspects of SMW addmusic (well, Romi's/Carol's addmusic at least), so if you plan to use it for SMW hacks, v1.51/v1.43 is better.)

Thank you! That's useful to know.

It's not that those are better, it's that they are less accurate, and therefore will actually play the broken music that SMW hacks have been using.

I know. (It's unfortunate, isn't it?)

The older versions are still "better" if you're planning on playing SMW hacks (which is the point I was making, since after all I am posting this on a SMW hacking site).
Well, is there a 100% accurate Emulator right now? I've heard BSNES is the most accurate at the moment. Sorry for offtopicness #w{x(}
This is a very creative project! The palettes too are very nice.
BSNES is like 99% accurate, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to make an 100% accurate emulator.

Kaizo Yoshi's Island? Sounds... Interesting.

(And first post in a hacking thread that isn't SMW on here... If I remember correctly. Woo.)
