Tip: Press F2 on the level editor to see sub-screen boundaries. This will help you avoid glitching Dragon Coins by putting them on the sub-screen boundaries.

This is what I plan to submit to the Kaizo contest that is coming up in 2 months
edit2: changed image
Current Cool to Kaizo progress:

Some simple jumps. Not that hard really, even 85 seconds isn't threatening.

Shell jumps. Also, the pipes reset the time. Just to be fair.

That key is important. TRAP: I forgot how I pulled it off, but it is possible to make the coins disappear by entering the pipe.

That's why you need the key. Also, you still need it.

Hey, look! It's actually not that hard!

Time to relax... but OMG THERE IS A FALLING SWITCH I MUST GET IT

"end of demo" And no, you don't need to keep the mushroom.

I don't think Kaizo hacks really need reset pipes. If this is an intro tutorial level, I guess it doesn't need to be that super hard, but still, I don't think Kaizo levels need fairness-increasing measures. Also in the last 2 screens, the water next to the brown blocks makes cutoff and if you pressed the switch, Mario commits witchcraft by making gravity defying cutoff water.
In one of the screens, you have a Dragon coin near a turn block. Unless you used the block duplication fix patch, are you aware that the player can duplicate the block into the Dragon coin, get the cutoff top half, and then the bottom half will turn into a block containing either a key, wings, balloon, or shell? Or is that required?

Something to do with the item memory index, maybe?
@mathelete I see you fixed the break I showcased in my video, rendering my video obsolete. Also, how do you know when the Kaizo contest is? Even so, never hurts to get an early start. My entry is well underway, but I don't think it would make much sense for me to post a video before the contest is even announced (not telling you to take your video down). Let me guess, difficult category?
I do not know about a Kaizo contest for this year. I am just as busy now as I was a year ago, and I still have that collab to do, along with college and robotics shiz. Of course, if our beloved Kaizo community can pull it off together, that'd be quite swell.
Well I assumed there probably would be one sometime this year (the word 'annual' does sorta have implications). From what I noticed in past years, the month in which it was held has been kind of inconsistent but in spring, so it makes sense that I would get pumped.
Anyway, feast your eyes on this frustration fest that I am reluctant to classify as Kaizo or pit but would probably lean more toward the latter (and so that I actually have a reason to post something here):

I decided to call this glitch hack "Block Abuse." If that name is already taken somewhere, I may come up with something else. That ? block contains directional coins (for once I did not use the block dupe fix patch or else this one level hack would be impossible). This part is only halfway tested. The ROM so far pretty much consists partly of half formed experiments.
It will probably use custom music instead of the usual piano music that seems to be the norm for these kind of x abuse hacks, just to make it a little less cookie cutter.

I am actually trying to decide between difficulty category and creativity category. The way I designed the final boss makes me think that creativity category is better, but the entire first area was inspired by the sky level of Kaizo Mario World, so I did not create a fresh idea. Still, I have lots of time to decide which category to participate in.
hmm,a contest might actually show the ''newbies'' how its done :)
depending on who might win, they could probably put a tutorial up or
how they made that hack...

Not sure how organized it would be, but it probably could be done. Looking back at the old contests and events, I'm pretty sure Ulti wasn't the host of the very first Kaizo contest (Panga was, I think).
Your level called "Block Abuse" is to the Kaizo Contest in this year?
It will be difficult to beat him, but I promise that I will be a strong competitor.
No, Block Abuse is not my Kaizo contest entry. I think it would be too hard even for the difficult category (requiring wall catches and block cloning and whatnot). I already have a different level planned for if such an event happens (it will be hard to beat, I think, and I'm having plenty fun making it), although if I enter it, deciding on whether to enter in difficult or creative may be more difficult than completing the level itself, and it is a fairly difficult level.
Which category of the contest do you think this belongs in?
Looks to me like difficult.

Thanks! That was the one thing I was unable to decide between, but I think feedback from another person really helps.
Rather than improve upon Punishing Pothole based upon the judges' feedback (might still do something like that and put it in Combo Breaker), I decided to make a sequel that is deliberately Kaizo and a thousand times harder and more unfair than the original Punishing Pothole, but still heavily based off of Punishing Pothole (same gimmick with sprites going through layer 2 but Mario can't).

In case you couldn't tell, I used the same base ROM as Punishing Pothole.

Yay, shell juggling across layer 2 that sprites would fall through while avoiding bullet bills.

Two of my favorite custom sprites, Giant Phanto and the Thwomp that stuns Mario when it lands. This is one liberty I can take since this is no longer the VLDC. Oh, and Mario's probably screwed. Is there any way to prevent the glitch where Mario is holding something while riding Yoshi?

No, you do not have to wall jump off that. Mario is just screwed. Again. Also, does the lone Muncher on the lava count as a fluncher?
Any of these are subject to change. I don't really feel comfortable talking about the Kaizo contest before it's even been announced (actually feels kinda weird to do so), but I'll say that just like many of the levels I typically make, I cannot decide if it's more difficult or creative. Still, receiving feedback never hurts.
If a muncher is on lava and the stem is IN the lava, then that is fine. But for the image you showed, I would suggest recoloring the stem and making it look like the muncher is growing out of the lava.

Lavaproof Muncher.
Looks cool so far, it seems that will have several puzzles, I like. More Giant Phanto?
The Giant Phanto is actually somewhat tentative. I was thinking about using a puzzle that would combine the layer 2 and the fact that if Yoshi holds a key in his mouth, then Phanto will not chase you, only if Mario is holding the key will Phanto chase you, and maybe you'll have to spin jump off of Phanto somewhere and somehow dispose of the key. Unfortunately, the glitch where Mario holds an item while on Yoshi completely wrecks that idea to smithereens. Guess I'll redesign parts of that area.
Probably might not use that concept anyway because I just basically gave it away (maybe I'll still use that for a level in E=MC Hammer.)

A picture of my hack. This level would be through "open", you can go any way, but for each path must have gone through another. This level is kind of a puzzle. I will not make video of this phase, if you play, you have to figure out how to pass alone.
