I imagine at first, they look for a ton of free time on their hands. Maybe they also do well in any programming and/or coding classes.

I'm pretty sure people who want to participate in the VIPs need to actually use a name, or a tripcode (the stuff behind the diamonds in the credits), in order to be identifiable.

^^ yeah that makes sense. but I counted the names in the Vip5 credits, there are only 25.
Shouldn't there be a lot more?
I also remember finding a page with level information when I downloaded vip5. Like what ExGfx pages they use, what sublevels etc.
And most of the Authors where labeled as Anonymous.

haha if you look at some of the early game levels, they look like the kind of stuff you throw together when you mess around with lunar magic for the first time. only a minority of the vippers are big asm wizards.

Alot of members are anons, when I was browsing Pukiwiki (dunno if it's up again or not) it had alot of anon users as the level creator's aswell as the rather well known level creator's of the hack.
But this was back when Vip5 only JUST finished. Another reason could be that they'd rather have the full credits on Pukiwiki than in the hack itself... I guess.

I don't suppose anyone could provide me with a link to Vip5 and/or Hyper 5 and 6? I feel like I looked everywhere for them. Are they supposed to be unable to get?

Latest Vip 5 demo will always be here.
Hyper 5 and 6 will be here plus a bunch of other JP hacks.

Yeah, the second one is probably Hyper 7.
Eh... it may be sometimes difficult to find a japanese hack because most of the names are japanese...

So, there's like a million different versions of it floating around on the Net, which version of Brutal Mario is the most complete, and where can I find it? I've got like seven copies of it, and none of them seem to be the most recent.

There is really no "most recent" version of Brutal Mario since the work in progress has been slowed down to a crawl. No version is "most complete" either because the unofficial demos with boss showcases had most of the ASM removed, so no demo is really close to completion. If you're interested in playing through levels, I'd say either Demo 7 (the one with no custom music) or the cheep demo (the ASM showcase) is what you should stick with.

thanks for the link to that site. lot of cool stuff there i hadnt heard of before.
i got some japanese hacks in a package of hacks, plus a lot of hacks that were possibly made here on a collection of hacks called nongoodsnes v2009-04-19

Last question and I'm done. I swear there's a version of Brutal Mario where Luigi's world is finished, including the final battle with him. Is there one or am I confusing BM with another Mario hack?

You might wanna provide links to videos, screenshots, or whatever and show us what you thought you saw. Mind you, I'd like to see that and whatever incarnation Luigi chooses to fight Mario. Based on graphics I saw inside another demo, Peach assumes the form of the Goddess boss from Final Fantasy III/VI after the use of her Super Princess Peach graphics.
