Mario's Long Traveling:

Hi everyone! =) I'm one of the newest members on this site, and I liked SMW hacking. I'm here almost a half of year, and I'm working on my first hack called "Mario's Long Travelling". Overworlds and Graphics are my favourite things in hacks. :) After trying to make a hack some time and learning about ASM, I finally released the first demo of my first hack. Learn more about it here:
MLT Demo 1.2

What do/will I do for this hack?
- Level Design
- Overworld Design
- Little GFX edits as I suck at drawing
- Little Music Instrument edits as I'm too lazy to make it
- Palettes
- ASM Blocks, and maybe programming custom bosses.

Now something about this hack:
One of the better secrets is that the Red Switch Palace doesn't exist normally. We can say, it will be like the last Thirdspace level from TSRPR. If you didn't play it, then I could say, Red Switch is making the game easier in 50%, but to get there, you'll need a lot of time, and play almost like a master. In full version, of course. I also installed an OW sprite from Final Fantasy V. Airship. You need all switches to use it (RED TOO) and you'll can fly over the overworld! It's like this one in SMW 7 Statues, but for me it won't be only a shortcut of flying through worlds, it will also land on islands that are not connected to normal hack journey!!! And only thing I want to say is, the hack is only a demo so it isn't as exciting as the full version will be. So, again, enjoy!
Here's a preview of the hack, first level:
Extensive Lagoon

Level 1-1, Extensive Lagoon

Which are the overworld themes for worlds?
World #1 - Tropical World
World #2 - Cave World
World #3 - Desert World
World #4 - Forest World
World #5 - Iced World
World #6 - Poisoned, Toxic World
World #7 - Mercury Planet (Volcano)
World #A - Night-Themed World
World #B - ??? (Yes, I made the OW for it, but it's a big surprise)

What is going to be done?
- 109 exits
- no cancelling
- fun levels
- more cutscenes
- unique gimmick every castle
- unique ASM things that do not appear in any other hack, even 7 statues.

Now, try it, and tell me what do you think about this hack. Have fun and follow this thread! :)
Have fun! :D

What I see so far looks stellar! The graphics and level design especially.

Perhaps you could explain more about it, though?
looks very nice. I'll give it a go and post a little review here.

Yes. :) The plot of this hack isn't really ended, and I wrote some thing to don't leave the story original. I'm still thinking on the story but it will be really exciting. One of the better secrets is that the Red Switch Palace doesn't exist normally. We can say, it will be like the last Thirdspace level from TSRPR. No? :) There is also a bonus world with 3 portal warps to it. It's a "Yoshland" or something like that. Every teleport gets you to a coloured Yoshi, blue, red, and yellow. Find a warp, beat some levels, and you can use a special level to earn a coloured yoshi. Of course, I didn't want to make levels cheatable by blue yoshi, so you must to beat some sections of the level and then get a yoshi. Cool>?? :) :) And only thing I want to say is, the hack is only a demo so it isn't as exciting as the full version will be. So, again, enjoy! :)
From what I played so far, the hack is very well made. It's a bit on the difficult side, as the levels are very long and power-ups, while available in every level, seem scarce.

The graphics are very nice, but standard. Nothing eye-popping yet, but I haven't played through the entire thing.
"Mario found this abandoned airship under the cliff of his house."
That sentence sounds weird. shouldn't it be near his house, not of his house?
This looks very nice to me. I'll have to try it out sometime.

Well, it kinda makes sense if he found it at the bottom of the cliff of his house.. Near might be better also...

Also, I'm really digging your cave submap, I really like the pallete and how it's made up! Where does that one pipe on the upper left lead though?

Looking through your screenshots, I think the graphics in your hack look great, level design seems interesting too. I'll definitely be trying the demo out.
Heh, first hack thread, cool. :) I'll desribe the progress. Now I'm working on the cave levels and I finished the first one. It's LONG! I'll probably make a message box in the first world that will say about level dots. In this hack, small level dot is an average level, and big level dot is an extentive, big, long level, or just a level that is different from others (special). The first cave level took me almost 3 days, cause I was working on the main map. I think I made it too fast, and if members won't like this OW, I'll probably rebuild it. Here it is:

Please, say something about it. :)
That... that... is beutiful... *sniffle*
no, serously. That's a really good overworld.
New News! :) I finally ended thinking on the story for the intro, and it contains three rooms. First and Second are the letter from Peach, the third section is the section with "Display Ms 1", and it contains a beautiful milky way BG. Waiting for it in the Full version would be too long, so here are screenshots:

Say, what do you think about that. And, you can still describe the main map. :)

EDIT: Thank to Hadron for adding this BG to SMWC and making a LM 1.7+ version. :)

Did you rip that? That's AMAZING!
After a brake, I'm continuing making this. I think, I made levels too hard, as I also don't like when a hack or level is evil :). I'll try to remake the first world, and remake the OW to make more extensive paths, and don't leave too much sea space. I'm going to use BG2, and BG3, on every section in this hack to make it more interesting. Every level in first world will use those three GFX: alternative grass set, general grassland set, by TheV if I remember, and Broozer's Grassland. I'm planning to use LunarDrake's grass on the next world. Every underground will use of course alternative underground set and general underground set, and WhiteYoshiEgg's Underground. I also made additional tiles for it. For Forest I'm going to use "Foresty Foreground" GFX, can be found in GFX section, and LunarDrake's Jungle. I also need to use alternative grass for the forest, because the monty moles needs to change into an original dirt tile after going off of a wall. :(

As to the intro, I found music for this. (Carol') :D
Legend of Mana (?!?) - Hometown Domina, for the first two sections,
Secret of Mana - Prophecy, for this milky way BG. :D

What do you think about this choice?
ZOMG, really it's one of the best Overworld I've looked here.
New News! I think I'll remake the special world of this hack. Three warps to coloured yoshis are boring, so I made 5 warps to a thing you shouldn't know before you'll play this! :) Hehehe.

And, I'm so happy because of that, because I won't just put a black background with a word like in SMW's Special World. I think I got an original idea! You don't see NIGHT worlds in SMW hacks, do you? :) :)

And thanks ManuMaster. I'm just putting effort into OWs and making them in a long time, not minute like 52,78% users of this site lol
So now, I'm not using the coloured yoshis, and I can make them as a reward in other extras! :)

So, is a night OW original?
Night itself maybe original, but it lacks of flavor, make something like night + X and it would be sweet.

Also, great hack! i'm going to play the demo now.

New News

I've improved some levels in world 1, and the main overworld. Now I'm using the SMB3 Bricks, and some redrawn GFX, but rare. (If you won't count, it's only Mario and used blocks, they sucks at SMW so I needed to change it into something). I've a bit changed the palette in Platform Hill, to make it fit more to the BG. New Cave level added to the first world. Flooded tunnels are replaced to some other world. And, now it's OWs' turn. Making a first world on main map is not really comfortable, because it often have not to many levels, and it's just a waste of place. Later, you can't for example make all world 6 levels on a submap. I moved the first world onto a mountain, and changed its color into as bright as I could to make it fit into levels. Inthe first version of OW, I needed to make the sixth world on a grassland that is really boring, and it's still on the OW, but with the current idea, every world will be interesting. The first world I can say, it's not fully a grass, it can be a mountain. So it's a mountain that has a grassland on it. It's a starter world. Maybe. The mountain world also helps me in designing the main map. I won't leave too many space, because I made cliffs on the top of the map! :) Look:

It's not the final version but it's a part of this. The bottom part will be remade and rearranged into something a lot better. Desert looks fine for me. And, don't lost hope for the airship! I made it in Mario's House on the mountain. From there, after activating switches, you will use the "in-level teleporting method from SMB3 pipes", in other words, Overworld Position Blocks V.3. Ignore the first world on this photo, I didn't have any time to rearrange it. For now, I think it's everything. Long update, I think. Go to bed Teo! #w{|o}
Well, even if the first one looks better to me, this one with those cliffs at the top is also very good. I suggest you remove those greenish waves at the water part above the waterfall, that would make it nicer.
Thanks to everyone! :) I'll try to remove some complicated parts at the cliffs. I have almost finished full map. I decided, to make some places reachable only when you have the airship. I know, I decided about it earlier, but that was going to be one place and with some levels. It was boring. I wanna do something different instead. I'll hide some different places on the main map that will just hide some plains, and a secret! :) The cave world is going to be finished soon! :) I'm horrible at making long caves, so I used BTSD. :P Don't worry, I'm not going to remake the levels at all. Challenging levels aren't wrong, they're just a challenge that makes you happier when you beat it as a challenge. The idea about the same tileset was also silly. I'm going to use every GFX in this game no more that 2 or 3 times. Well, wish me good luck and it will become a very good hack! :)
