I was inspired to make a meat boy hack, and I have the graphics for the character, but with several failed attempts to make a level that feels "meatboy-ey", I have decided to do what I understand meatboy can do. I will make this a compilation hack (sort of like SMWCP, but with meatboy of course). of course I need help, so I need anyone willing to help to, well... help! when you get a level done, you are to post so and then post the level in a non rule breaking way. I will then pick it up, test it out for difficulty level and retardedness. And just like in meat boy, one shot will kill you, so keep that in mind. I plan to add a "always small" and "alternate yoshi coin counter" patches to the final production.
However there WILL be rules;
RULE 1). you must use the "[player] Super Meat Boy GFX" (screenshot of some of them below, just ignore big mario, we're staying small) I posted both to Graphics and My Files (to make it easier, so we don't have to worry about player GFX differences and such.).

Rule 2). If you are helping, You must post which level number you are using BEFORE YOU START ON IT (again, to make it easier)!
RULE 3). And this is a big one! There is sometimes a fine line between meatboy and kaizo/I want to be the guy, DO NOT CROSS THIS LINE!!! Like I said, I will personally test every level, so DON'T DO IT!
Recommendation: use the "bandade" dragon/yoshi coin included in the GFX every now and then.
I apolagize if I'm seeming bossy, but I REALLY want my first project I worked VERY HARD ON to be a success.
EDIT: ok, since mariowings77's GFX are better, we should use that instead.

Here's some pointers:
1.

If you're going to develop levels for this hack, this is almost a necessity. (Keep in mind that not every level in the original Meat Boy game on Newgrounds or Super Meat Boy used saws for every level, so don't try going overboard on them.)
2. Read this to understand how levels were designed in Super Meat Boy.

Please note: as a back up plan incase this fails, I will still be working on my version, but its not going to be easy since I can't even get the game to load on my computer, haven't ever played but for 5 secoonds to see what bandade girl looked like for my GFX, and feel like I'm making kaizo levels every time.
And thanks for the tips. I was already using the grinders, but I could use the "read-me".

SMB difficulty > IWBTG > Kaizo
Just putting that out there. The game is fucking intense and mind-numbingly difficult at times.

I am just posting here to say that your player GFX aren't very good, you should shade them more, among other things.

agreeing with moltensnow volke
super meat boy is not an 8-bit game, why would a 'remake' be 8-bit? (unless you were going for 8-bit but it seems a little silly, why not just hack smb3 then?)
edit: lol

Agreed with the two posts above. What I can help with is making out a custom palette, editing your gfx, and posting a new version up for you that has more of a meat boy feel. It'll take me maybe an hour or two when I sit down to actually do it. I'd like to help with this however. I'm very good when it comes to clean level design, and I've been known to make some hellish levels before for a hack called the dsultimate hack. Not sure if it's still up and being worked on, but I have made hell in those levels. I will get started on the player gfx shortly.
EDIT :
Two things.
1 - I will be making a custom palette for it. In the game, super meat boy is red as opposed to pinkish. Easily taken care of.
2 - Is it ok with you if I redraw the graphics that you have to-
a) Seem more like meat boy.
b) Get rid of the 8-bit type look to it.
EDIT 2 :
Too late. Everything on mah list is done. Here's a vid. Let me know if you're interested fellow meat boy fan.

Ok, cool. I'll let you use my graphics then. I'm also working on making smw type meat boy land graphics... But I'm not as good working with land tiles as I am with sprite tiles. So you'll have to see where that goes.
Maybe we could start it out easy and make it slowly degrade to a kaizo ish hack? :I

I do hope you plan on making the meat-trail feature for this. It won't be the same. Some ASM will be needed to swap out the physics as well.
Also, why not just rip the graphics from the game itself?

Super Meat Boy might be tough at times (to the point where I actually might cry on levels, especially in the Dark World), but at least you know why it happens and unlike IWBTG or even Syobon Action, there's no subtle surprises in store for you. Try to make the game similar to SMB (wow, coincidence that the game's initials go up to that) and make sure it's not impossible. Depending on whether you want to go full throttle on this project, make the levels beatable in correspondence to the controls, meaning make it beatable with the SMW controls or with some modified controls in the SMW engine similar to SMB.
Or something like that. I'm not a game designer after all.

You may want to check out this. MGD 1UPdudes current attempt to make a SMB style SMW hack. Definetely not saying that you shouldn't do this, as there is plenty of room for more than one SMB style hack. It might give you a little inspiration for a way to go about it. Don't copy 1UPdudes too much though.
I've played the Meat Boy flash game a little bit but haven't played SMB so I can't really give you that much more advice.
Edit: The blood effect might be achieved through custom blocks that turn into the next Map16 block when you touch them.

I've been fighting with myself over this decision for awhile, and I finally decided that it would probally be for the best if I was to hand this project over to someone else to supervise. I came to this decision for afew reasons.
A) I never was good at working with others on stuff like this, and it's even more impossible for me over the internet.
B) I can't really contribute anything to this project.
C) I'll be honest, I'm not really a "fan" of meatboy, I'm just the kind of guy who might play it every now and then or watch it on youtube.
D) This thread isn't really getting much attention under my supervision. So far I've seen no level help except for tips, and that's one of the most necessary parts of any game, something to play on.
E) Even if someone did help, I realized I wouldn't be able to put all of the stuff together yet with my poor experience and still make it look good.
F) I'm to stupid to remember all of my reasons
My point is, anyone who can and would like to take over the supervision of this project, just post or PM me and I might decide to pick you.
I'll keep this thread open for later people who might be interested and can help. I'll also probally keep an eye on this thread from now to then if I do hand it over.
NOTE TO mariowings77: you should keep it up on the GFX, they're very good and once they're done, you can post it in the graphics section for future use.
I might as well stick to what I'm "good at" and just play games.sorry I can't help.

Will do. I understand. Unfortunately, I only planned on making the graphics themselves, so after I finish up mario's meat boy swap, I'll be finished. Sorry to hear that you're not continuing this. I was looking forward to it. And just for you, I'll make a side hack with those graphics. Don't know the gimmick or anything, but it will be done... hopefully.
