I have always had troubles with wireless Internet, but they have gotten progressively worse in recent history. A few weeks ago, I was trying to get wireless Internet set up on Linux by unplugging the Ethernet cable from the router and plugging it directly into my laptop. I never did finish what I'd been intending to do, but either me unplugging that cable it had some nasty side effects, or there was an amazing coincidence. After that night, my Internet was never the same; I couldn't even get it to work for a day and a half, and even after my dad bought a new router, I still had even more problems than I had before. I get abruptly disconnected sometimes, and when I "wake up" my computer (press the power button to bring it out of sleep mode), it can take a good 10-15 minutes for it to reconnect. Sometimes, it never does, and I have to connect manually. More often than not, when I try to connect manually, that takes so long that I get an error message about being unable to connect. I have to wait another several minutes to see if it will connect automatically. Once, some setting of my router even messed up my ability to connect to the wi-fi at the university, even though it usually works perfectly fine.

So, the whole point of all this is: What can I do to fix this stuff? It is really driving me nuts how bad my Internet connection seems to be...or whatever the heck the cause is! The laptop is maybe 30-40 feet away from the router and in a different room, but I really can't move either of them any closer. I've had problems like this in the past, but not this bad.

My first suggestion is to check the alignment of the antenna on the router. This may seem like a simple problem but it can have a drastic impact at times. My internet will not connect at all if my wireless is not oriented correctly.
Actually, the new router doesn't even have an antenna. (The old one did, though.) Maybe just orienting the entire router to a certain direction would help?

Many times the antennas are internal and can not be directly seen. try a few angles and see if that helps.
Hm, it's difficult to tell. It doesn't seem to be the router's fault, though, since we got a new one again and the same problems are still present.
Could it possibly just be your computer? Try going to a hotspot and connecting there.
First and foremost: Linux is not something I know well, and it's probably a finicky issue at the heart of all that, but I do have suggestions.

1. Make sure you are connecting to your wireless network, I can get my neighbour's at low strength but local computers default to that one for some reason.

2. Some routers have to give access to each computer individually to give them full internet access.

3. Kick your internet service provide in the nuts

4. Make sure your computer isn't running 1001 different tasks at once through the internet.

5. Avoid wireless phone and microwave usage.

lol

Seriously, these things won't disturb your wireless.

Anyways, my best troubleshoot question is simple, what Linux are you using? Are you writing your own distro for that kernel? Or are you using Ubuntu or any other well known distro?
Actually, I'm not using Linux anymore. I figure that if I'm having this much trouble on Windows, it will be even worse on Linux...or at least, before I even try to mess with it on Linux again, I'd like to get it stabilized on Windows first.
