Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure the processing YT does to videos can quite frequently be unhealthy for video quality. It's not a huge issue, though, only a big deal for complete videophiles like myself.
But in that context, I was referring to the fact that I had the full mkv files downloaded, I wasn't streaming them.

Not a bad problem to have if you ask me.
EDIT: "Smile" (the song) is regaining it's standing in my view. I kept whining to myself that "it's the same sort of thing you'd hear in any sugary kids show!" Then I remembered that that isn't necessarily a problem. Indeed, isn't the show so great because it does these cliches and does them right? Cliches become cliches because they work (and become overused). Find away to do them without the audience scoffing at it, and you've got some powerful storytelling.
Maybe I could throw a criticism at it that no, it didn't get the cliche past me without me noticing. So even now I won't call Smile perfect. I will say it did what it set out to accomplish, and did it well, so it has my respect in that way. And besides, the lyrics (and maaaaaybe the sorta slow first half) are the only possible thing that could be considered a weakness; everything else about the song is goddamn awesome.
That's a lot of typing and thinking for a 3 minute song. Spending a long time analyzing something is a tribute to how good or bad it is, and since I've never not liked the song, just waffing around wondering how much I like it... that's probably a good sign.

Well it's good that you do over analyse the show, it shows the crew is doing a good job if you would have to dig deep to nitpick it.
Ended up watching the latest episode, i'm really head over heels with the show background music. I was surprised at how Cranky Doodle Donkey was mixed into the shows usual Mickey Mousing and was actually used to convoy emotions in the episode as well. There must be damn good and dedicated composers working on this show.

Well it is, if you can't watch it!
With my current internet speed it'd take until next week to download it, I was only able to catch up this far because Kieran snail mailed me a DVD with the eps I missed
And yea, I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I don't think Youtube manages to convert HD stuff flawlessly, at least my experience with supposedly-HD stuff on Youtube has been quite.. disappointing.

I like the new voice better.
EDIT: And whatever you think of it, you gotta admit, the overreaction some people are having is hilarious.
Have a gem from ED's comments:
QuoteYou know what this means. Jayson and the teams relationship with bronies is most likely over. It wouldn't surprise me if they go back to the G1 formula after this season is over. Or in fact DURING this season. "Why IS Princess Candence an Alicorn?"
I'd link directly to it but the comments busted, and you can only read most of them through the reply window.
(For the record I'm fine with people being sad/angry/whatever. That draws no disrespect for me; emotional attachments are good things, not bad ones. It's just the people calling doom and gloom for the future that I'm more or less mocking.)

I still prefer the old voice. Maybe it's because I'm used to it.

Wait, what?
Did they seriously change Derpy's voice and remove her name? Judging by those comments, it seems likes nobody else really likes it either. If its just Apple, I have absolutely no idea why they would do that.
What obscure rule to they have that allows them to change that?!

No one knows for sure. I really, really doubt it was trolls or complaints from viewers, though.
My theory: I think they hit a snag when wanting to distribute it to networks outside the US. Remember how Canada censored the word "loser" in Party of One? Well Derpy could certainly be construed as mentally handicapped with her old voice and the eyes. Some network probably got sheepish.
Doesn't explain the lack of a name, though.

It' still clearly a fan-given name, which might be the reason they aren't using it.
Anyways, I find the new voice to be tons better, though the complete lack of derp-eyes is somewhat annoying.
But eh, it's still The Last Roundup, so yeah whatever =P

Actually, Rainbow Dash called her Derpy in the original Last Roundup, so I wouldn't say it's "clearly a fan-given name" any more, making the lack of a name kind of weird indeed (it's not like the name "Derpy" could really offend anybody).

Actually I was referring to my previous post on the matter, from way back:
Originally posted by SindWell, generally production teems are simply not allowed to be influenced by their fans. It's often inevitable anyways, but it can at least be concealed. This time it was quite obvious that they were influenced to call her Derpy.

I now have a ton of respect for this dude.
QuoteIn a way, I understand why majority of fans are upset but blaming, pointing fingers and throwing hate around is not the way to do this. You're forgetting your own motto "Love and Tolerance". You bronies are one of inspiration and our greatest achievement. Don't sully your name by spreading Hate and intolerance. Remember, Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way. You'll get your message across much better than lashing it out with hate. Show some respect. Show some humility.

Well if you don't mind me pointing out the problem, this most likely have to do with the way everyone on the internet handles things.
Derpy is a really beloved character so it will stand that alot more people will defend her if she gets any controversy. That said, the ones defending her sort of shot themselves in the foot as they ended up keeping the whole controversy relevant.
It sort of like some weird reverse of the Streisand effect.

And people wonder why Applejack is best pony.
EDIT: Epiphany regarding the derpy thing:
I'm starting to wonder if people who are really worked up about this identify with Derpy. The internet's a rough place, where you'll get yelled at for doing any sort of mistake that's against the social norm ("newfag," "lurk more," etc). So people might be latching on to an imperfect character who makes many mistakes, and sympathize saying, "hey, I'm a misfit too."
Which is why people are taking it so seriously. If that's the case, I empathize with them more than I did previously. Still no excuse to go on a hate filled rampage insulting whoever they think is the cause of it, but I can see it taken a bit more personally than just "don't mess with my favorite character."

But seriously. I was waiting for this because I was really curious to how it sounded. Didn't think there was going to be so many puns, but who said puns have to be a bad thing?

Man I absolutely...
...had a way too high expectation of it.
It seemed to fell down the same clichés most extended themes go though. Most notably that the chorus and the verses didn't really flow into each other as smoothly as I would of expected it to. The puns are awesome and I'm sure the remix community can salvage quite alot of it but for a show with awesome music, the extended theme just kinda disappointed me.
Did anyone hear a bit of Winter Wrap Up in that song though, I swear the song takes a few cues from it.

Damn it, I actually want to hear this full theme but I'm not on a Flash supported browser. Shucks. Could someone link the MP3 of it or something?
Also I think the last two comments got derped up somehow, I thought the closed minded one was Kaijyuu.

Ptthhbbbt.

EDIT: Fine. So I'm not ranting all the time about why stuff doesn't work, I'll rant about why something does! How about that!
- The puns I felt were clever, because they integrated three things: the pun, an analogy, and each pony's element.
- The flow however did seem a bit off. I suspect Daniel Ingram isn't the one who wrote the lyrics.
- The melody is pretty damn awesome.
- The vocals also seem a bit loud. Dunno what's going on there (maybe youtube or the person who recorded its fault).
- Friendship is magic, bitch.
- Made me teary eyed, from nostalgia I guess.
Basically, normal opening theme + good representation of each character + decently clever lyrics = goddamn awesome.
