It means "wife", weeaboo-ified. So "mai waifu" means "my wife".

You say that, but by alot of japans standards otaku's are classed pretty low and frounded upon... Which is a shame. So yeah it would occur often but not "normal" to many people :/
Although damn there are some hawt anime characters that I would love to have as mai waifu I did not just type that @__@.

Well, it's not normal, off course not, but compared to our standards, it comes a LOT closer to being normal in Japan then it being even close to normal over here.

Essentially, your waifu is the character in anime/manga/visual novels/other(usually 2d) media who you feel the strongest feelings for. If you are sexually attracted to them, they are not your waifu. They are only your waifu if you feel like you want to be with them and love them more than anybody else. Of course, most people wouldn't experience what it's like to have a real waifu/husbando because you probably aren't socially disabled to the point where you would actually need one.
The concept itself most likely originated from japanese hikkikomoris, as most of them suffer from social deprivation(as a result of cutting themselves off from society), causing them to resort to using a fictional character to fill basic social needs. It is by no means a normal thing, but it is not some horrible, godawful thing either. There's a reason behind it, and it isn't just having the urge to furiously masturbate to the image of a character.

I didn't even notice that annoying unhighlightable text in his layout, and I thoroughly read this thread at least a couple times. But I think it's justifiable, seeing as someone might try to steal his posts and sell them or something. I mean, who would want that to happen to them?
