I started doing the chessboard graphics, so i did this in some minutes, hope it looks good.

The cursor sprite is going to be very useful here, I reckon.

If I were you, I'd made the squares 32x32 rather than 16x16. If we do that, it should be able to fit on one screen (read: should), and then we can have them big enough to display chess pieces. How exactly we'll do that will be saved for after the palaces + vault are completed.
Slight bump, but since DGBarca and SLBros are no longer designing the level, is the chess piece idea still on or what?
It was a good idea to begin with, so I'd like to see it continue, yes.
further ideas:

a) What if you have to place the pieces in a certain way?
such as: "the knight must be able to kill the qween, while no pieces should bealble to kill the knight. The qween must not be threatened by any piece other than the knight, but must threaten the rook." and etc.

b) or better yet, what if there are already placed some white pieces on the board, and you have to use your four pieces to checkmate the white king without any of your own pieces being threatened.
I just got the green switch palace and i'd like to know if there are any final decisions on anything special about the switches or should I just design like a normal switch.
Instead of placing the piece anywhere, there could be only a few places you can put the pieces, maybe 6 or 8. You will have to choose where to each piece to checkmate the king. There should be only 1 solution. Then when the puzzle is solved a secret passage could appear near the chessboard so you can see it appear, I suggest a puff of smoke. After they have placed the pieces, there should be a sound effect. One for getting it right, and one for getting it wrong. If they get it wrong after placing all the pieces, they will get the sound effect and then the board resets. Sound good to anyone?
How about having the chess peaces (once colected) automatically apear in the correct spot, and with exanimation, we can make the squares that can be attacked by the peaces blink.The player would see the squares/lines coincide in places, getting the clue to world 9.

I have the Blue Switch, and all the other switches are done (I think, or is two that's done...?)

I think they're referring to a plan the original switch palace designers came up with, but I thought that fell through after the levels were passed on...? You probably don't have to worry about it. I don't remember the currently-inserted switch palace levels doing any of that (correct me if I'm wrong).
Giant Shy Guy you don't have to worry about this stuff. AxemJinx, I think you are right about these ideas were more for the original designers.

BTW GSG, the Red Switch Palace is still being completed. Yellow and Greeny are done ... lololz.

I think you guys should go for it. I mean, it's only one extra room, right? It's not like you're redesigning your whole level to accommodate the pieces or anything. It's sounds like an awesome idea, imo.
