Hey and welcome to my hack thread. This is my 3rd or 4th attempt at a hack and all of my previous attempts have failed. Obviously, I'm hoping this one doesn't but it's definitely going to take a long time to make as I want the hack to have at least 50 levels. There will probably be a lot of elements from Paper Mario since it's one of my favourite games, but I'm also going to take some gimmicks from other games and hopefully incorporate many of my own ideas which I've had in mind for years. I haven't fully thought of a plot and even a name, but I will soon. It'll most likely involve Bowser unless I can come up with something better.

I am definitely going to keep level design my primary focus, but expect some ASM gimmicks thrown into some levels to make them interesting. For graphics, it'll probably all be chocolate and I'll be taking resources from here or rip graphics which I see fit. I'm terrible with music and have probably only made 3 or 4 successful ports so I'll just pick some songs from here.

There's not much else to say right now, so off to the screenshots!

Showing off the Pause Menu I originally made 2 years ago (I owe a lot of credit to Bio for this). It functions pretty much like this and I'll be adding plenty of items which can be stored there as you progress through the hack. The stats and save-game options do nothing as of now though. Also, you can see the status bar. It only contains a coin counter, lives counter and a health counter. I didn't want to fill it in with crap to obstruct the top part of the screen.

The first level, unnamed. It's a forest-type grassland area filled with generic SMW enemies. The Goomba and Koopas were drawn By Meirdent and I think they look pretty great.

Later on you will encounter the Goomba Bros. Since it's the very first level, they're easy to defeat. You won't be able to cross the screen unless you defeat them. Also, I know their graphics (drawn by LunarDrake BTW) are completely different from the small Goombas so expect them to be replaced soon.

A short cave area that involves a very simple puzzle. It's part of the first level.

Toad Town which I already showed off in the Screenshots/Video thread. I'll try to make it lively by adding NPC Toads, a shop, arcade, Toad Houses, etc. and it's most likely going to be the hub of the hack. I owe a lot of credit to LunarDrake for the fantastic tileset he drew for this.

The second level which I'm currently working on. I's going to be a forest filled with fuzzies (not just the SMW one, I've made the Paper Mario one for this and may make some other types of Fuzzies too). It uses the same graphics as the first level but has a new palette. How does it look?

Well, that's it for now. Please note that a lot of things are WIP (the coins and turn blocks for example) and are going to change soon. Comments and criticism would be appreciated. :P
Iceguy making a hack!?

This looks very promising. The screenshots are fresh and look really nice. Good combination of the BG and FG in level 1. The Goomba Bros. look sexy too. =>
The palette of the subcave isn't that well. The gradient of it could be smoother. Now the contrast between top layer and dirt is too big.
The second level (forest) looks very great! The palette is amazing and the HDMA is very well done. Not too fond of the BG colour, but it's OK. Very creative how you used the stem of the mushroom platforms as a platform.

This looks very neat, Iceguy. Just hoping you will use some other graphics too, because too much LunarDrakeGrassland will be boring. Keep it up!
This looks really nice iceguy. Im digging the Paper Mario vibe Im getting here.
It reminds me of the first paper mario due to the goomba bros and also the fuzzy in woods which happens arly in game in PM64.

Pallettes are lush! :3
Wow, this looks quite awesome so far. Excellent graphical choices, they're all so vibrant and happy. I especially love the town graphics and the Fuzzy sprite. The ASM features, such as the pause menu, look to be neat additions.

Great job, and glad to see you're working on a hack. =)
Thanks for the positive feedback guys, it's really appreciated. :)

Hmm, I added a brightness HDMA gradient there to give it some sort of cave feeling but you're right about it that the transition could be a bit smoother. I'll fiddle with the gradient and see if I can make anything better.

Thanks! I might change the BG palette but I personally think it looks alright as of now.

Yeah, those graphics will only be used for this first two levels. I'll use some other graphics for the rest of the World 1 levels.

Hehe, thanks. It's exactly what I aimed for and I'm glad its working out.

Awesome, thanks. That really means a lot to me especially when it comes from a great hacker like you. :)
I must say, this hack is looking quite amazing! Almost feature hack material (if not up there...), keep at it! The only thing I can think of to improve would be to change the goomba bros graphics...oh wait...you said you were doing that...nevermind...the complaint count once again equals zero...
I really like the pause menu option, that is pretty cool. And nice status bar, no clutter there! Also may I recommend a song for forest levels? If so, I would recommend "Lost Woods" from Zelda OoT, Just because it is a catchy tune, and rather a bit original from the actual song. Well anyways nice hack, looking forward to playing it!

EDIT: I find the Paper Mario aspect quite fascinating!

Sure, I'd appreciate any suggestions for graphics/music/etc. I haven't actually applied music yet though and it's something I'll do later on. Also, some screenshots of the interior of Toad Town:

A shop, it's very similar to the old one I created (and yes, this one does having animating items but I was too lazy to make a .gif). I'm going to try my best to make it useful by providing some items you won't find in regular levels (and would possibly be required to advance in some levels). Also, because you can store up to 7 items at once, I'm going to be putting a very few number of powerups in levels. The Toad and decorations are WIP, btw.

A rest area for Mario. You can hit the lamp to go to sleep to replenish your HP just like in Paper Mario.
Hmm... the walls aren't that decorated, but I blame the drawer of the tileset. The whole tileset is almost made from the same tiles. Liking the Paper Mario effect there too. Also, isn't 240 a little bit cheap for a 3-up Moon? They should be really rare, so I was thinking of 300.
It's not necessary that everything should be decorated. :\ I couldn't find any good interior tileset that matched with the exterior and besides I wanted to keep it simple. Maybe I might change it later, but for now I think it looks alright. Also, now that I think about it, you're right that the 3-up should be a bit more expensive but I'd also like others opinion on that (as well as the prices of the other items) too.
What is the blue turtle shell for? And the shop looks pretty good so far. I also agree with GvS that the moon should go up in price. Probably around 300 would be a good price.
This is looking pretty awesome so far, Iceguy. It's nice to see you are implementing RPG-esque elements into your hack aside from focusing solely on level aspects. Figured I should also mention that I, for one, really like your graphical combinations - the graphics you are using seem to completement one another surprisingly well, and I personally reckon the shop interior looks just fine the way it is.

As for the prices, they actually seem reasonable to me - although I do have to agree on the fact the moon may be a bit too cheap. Other than that, no complaints from me.

Overall, nice work. I really hope I can see more from you, including some levels!
Cool shop screenshots. Great to see there will be a bit more variety than your standard mushroom/fire flower/star fare typical to many SMW hacks.

Let me guess, the Blue Shell is the item for NSMB? I'm a bit stumped on the lightning bolt item, though. I'm assuming it's used against enemies.

Great work. =)
very nice! This is a good looking hack. I suppose the cape will not be in the hack?

EDIT: L-L-LEVEL UP!

AMAZING! This should be a Paper Mario! But, shouldn't Mario be more Paper Marioish? I like this hack so far. I wanna play it! Keep it up!
Wow, lookin' nice.

I hope that you can at least release a demo someday of this hack.

(also, the goomba bros remember me the Nameless Protagonist ones)
Why would you put a 3-Up moon in a shop anyways? :/
Thanks again for the comments =)

The blue shell is the NSMB style one yes. You'll probably have to buy one at some point to advance in a level or something. Also, I've now raised the price of the 3-up moon to 300.

Yep, it'll kill enemies on screen. It won't be able kill the more powerful enemies though.

Well.. I'll think about it later. Honestly I don't really care about the player graphics and most of the Paper Mario graphics I've seen aren't that good or are 32x32, and I don't want to use that 32x32 player patch.

I ripped them from a spritesheet LunarDrake drew, maybe he ripped them from there as well.

So that the player can buy some if he's low on lives? If it (or any other item) ends up being useless, I'll replace it with something else. It's still WIP.
This is looking very good, and I hope it won't take 10 years to complete like some hacks. The shop looks interesting, but you should make items more expensive. Nice gimmicks and HDMA effects, with your knowledge you can make a lot of cool ASMy things for this hack. :) Keep it up! :)
Everything looks so nice and colorful. I love your choice of palettes and graphics.
