I've always been kind of curious what the 'server box' or whatever they are called, looks like. I always imagined a mess of cables and wires extending out of a computer. Am I close?

Somehow, I don't think so. Nobody wants to buy old hardware when you can get a new computer that is twice as good for the same amount of money.
