Xfinity Modem Replacemet

So, we got a letter from Comcast yesterday telling us that our modem doesn't support the full Xfinity speed (ours is 35 mbps, full Xfinity is 50 mbps). They say that they can replace the modem. However:

1. I heard that they also replace your wireless router with a Netgear. Our Linksys has been strong for the past 5 years since we got it, and I heard Netgears are notorious for dropping connections on this service. Can we opt to not have it replaced?

2. Our internet is still very fast, even without this "full speed" they're speaking of. Is the modem change mandatory?

EDIT: The modem is a Motorola SB4220. Comcast's list of devices said that it became an End of life device back in January, but it's April now and it still works perfectly fine.

1. I don't think so. I have Xfinity, and I have my own router and even my own modem, I just called Comcast and they set the devices up from their end.

2. Not if you don't want to, I would imagine, or if it stops working.

Your layout has been removed.
...35Mbps? Seriously? That's incredibly fast; I have to deal with my shitty 3Mbps at best (although usually it hangs around 1.75). If you really want to keep your Motorola, you would still have good internet. If you want the even faster internet, you can see if Comcast can set you up with a Motorola or Linksys (I mention Linksys because their pretty damn reliable; mine's been running for longer than I can remember without error) instead of a Netgear.
Actually, it's 25mbps, misread the specs >.<
Anyway, we're having someone from Comcast replace the modem to a more recent model of Motorola Surfboard. Though, they might not replace our router since we bought it (instead of it being rented from Comcast like most modems are).
Also, yes, we already have a Linksys router. Had it for 5 years and it has worked flawlessly.
