Super Metroid Integrated Level Editor (SMILE) Help Thread

The purpose of this thread is to try and keep any and all SMILE questions in here. If you have a question about something in SMILE or are just confused by how it works, just post in here and I, or any other user here knowledgeable about SM hacking will try to help you.

The latest version of SMILE, version 1.0, can be found here.

As always, if you want help with more advanced topics in SM hacking, you can check the Metroid hacking IRC channel #jzd on irc.esper.net.
1) How does SMILE work?
2) Is it like Lunar Magic; a drag-and-drop program?
3) Is it complex or easy to use?

1. SMILE is an integrated level editor. What that means, I'm not entirely sure about. I think Jathys said something about that meaning it works directly with the game to show its changes.

2. SMILE is NOT a drag and drop editor like Lunar Magic. However it is a copy and paste editor. You select a tile or group of tiles and paste them where you want them.

3. It really depends. The basic functions like copying and pasting tiles are simple enough but the more advanced functions that SMILE can do can be quite complex or in-depth. The only way to lower the complexity of SMILE is to learn how it works, sometimes through trial-and-error, and that may mean you could destroy your ROM more than once. Because of this, it's even more important to use backups than with SMW and Lunar Magic.
-WARNING-
NOOBISH QUESTION AHEAD

How do you add sprites?I Only started SMILE in early dec.
Actually, that's not noobish.

Click Edit=>Special=>Enemy/PLM(+/-)
WAITWAITWAITWAIT!!!

DON'T USE THAT DIALOG!

Basically, you SHOULD NOT add sprites unless you free up space in that room for them, and I don't believe you can do that in SMILE. If you try and add sprites, bad things can start to happen. Basically, the best thing for you to do is modify the existing Enemies/PLMs already in the room. This will lessen the chance of things going wrong.
Okay......

I have a MASSIVE problem!!!!

whilst my hack does work there is only one part that doesnt and thats in Ceres....the problem is that as you travel from the first screen in ceres to the next it crashes....so i went to "edit Door" and the numbers at the top are all "0's" I tried fixing this by putting in the correct numbers and then pushed "Ctrl E" to enter the door and it worked fine...however I then went to try it out on the emu and it didnt work :S

It turns out it didnt save even though i clicked save room etc

PLEASE HELP!!!!! I really don't know why it isn't saving :(
Uh maybe not bump?
Any way. When editing a door you need to press the "remeber ->" button.
Then close the door editor and save the room. And your door edits should be in.

Also you can remove the whole intro in one of the options. And that should be handy for beta testing.
Hey guys, remember this thread?

Also, remember to check the dates next time...

I know. But since the topic was bumped by him I though I might as well answer his question. :/
When the picture of the Larry King interview pops up, you must use the dropdown menu to the upper right to select the room you want to edit. The rooms are listed as 5-value strings of hex numbers. For example, the landing site is room 791F8.
Try getting the latest version of SMILE, it's alot easier to use. I haven't gotten the latest LATEst version, but the version one up from the one you have should be eaisier to use.
Does Anyone here know how to edit where the doors take you?

If you knew what you where talking about. Then you should know getting a newer version wont help. >_>;

@Black Yoshi: There is a drop down menu to the right of the main screen. In it are hex strings every one starts with 7. Any way, Just sellect any string and it takes you to that room.

@Doooomster: shift click the door tile to open the door editor.

(Sorry if I'm sounding annoying)I can't open that menu! The only ones I can open are File and Help.

This is what the window looks like:

Edit by FirePhoenix: Linked due to massive image.

Well that's interesting. The dropdown menu that we're talking about is being covered up by the blue part. That's very strange. What version of SMILE do you have? The latest one is v1.32.

Aside form possibly an outdated version that has some strange bug, I'm really not sure why your SMILE is doing that.
your sure your loading super metroid.SMC Right?

You could load a .zip if the .smc file is in it.

A .smc is a SNES ROM by the way.

Yes.IThe first time I use SMILE,I load my ROM for the first option and the clean_512 file for the second.
... *face palm*

well technical. You "should" be able to load clean_512.smc and use that.

I think your ROM image might be broken.

Any way. The first you boot smile up. Select a un edited ROM and load.
This ROM will be used for the back up function in SMILE (that sux any way. But meh...) then you manually make a copy of the clean ROM with another name and select that from in SMILE as the ROM you want to edit.

You only need to select a clean ROM the first time. But since your using a file SMILE make before it even makes it. Things get fucked up.

I hope this helps. ^.^
Alright, I'm a bit of a noob myself, and I'm having problems...

Whenever I open SMILE and select the rom (Its a fresh rom, I havent touched it) It gives me a error that says "". Could I get some help?
PAL means that you have a european ROM. SMILE probably needs the NTSC/US version, so just look for a ROM with (U) in the filename.
