Rap: Ice Cube, 2Pac (though he is dead apparently), EPMD
Ice Cube has all kinds of different rap in his repertoire. He's got some cuts which basically keep his respect with the people he runs with ("You Know How We Do It", "Too West Coast", "I Rep That West") and some which preach his real feelings about what's going on in the 'hood ("Stand Tall", "Hood Robbin'", "Cold Places"). The ones where he expresses his feelings are the best IMO.
- Favorite Song: Stand Tall
2Pac was another rapper along the lines of Ice Cube, but the topics in his songs were more on a personal level. He had the same flexibility as Cube with songs about his 'hood ("When We Ride", "Still Ballin'") and how he felt about it ("Changes", "Life Goes On", "Keep Your Head Up"). Again, the feeling ones are the best.
- Favorite Song: Changes
EPMD was a rap group made back in the 1980's, consisting of Eric B and Rakim; these two actually made a few songs under EB&R. If you're new to rap music, these are the guys you want to listen to first. If you like it, head to Ice Cube, then 2Pac.
- Favorite Songs: You Gots To Chill
Pink Floyd is the only rock group I can recommend. Spearheaded by Roger Waters and later by David Gilmour, this iconic band knew how to get a story out of their albums. Just listen to "The Wall" a few times, and you'll see what I mean.
- Favorite Song: Comfortably Numb

Oh wow, how could I forget about the Gorillaz and the Red Hot Chili Peppers?? And 2Pac is awesome, my brother and I use to listen to him all the time, we were so upset when he died, but that made us listen to him even more. Oh yeah, I remember listening to Rakim, it was actually the song R.A.K.I.M. when I first about him. That is an awesome song right there. Also thanks for the other suggestions too! I have only listen to a couple of songs by Pink Floyd, even though my brother use to listen to them all the time, I just never really gave them a chance, but know I will check out their song =D

Let's say this. Any hiphop you want to listen to is from the '80s and '90s and music from those same artists nowadays
Hiphop
Nas-"Illmatic" is and will forever be the best CD
Common-some nice CDs such as "Resurrection", "Be", "Electric Circus", "Like Water For Chocolate"
Mos Def-"Black on Both Sides"
anything from Talib Kweli
anything from Lupe Fiasco
If you are a Christian some Christian hiphop is dope
shai linne-"Solus Christus Project"
Ambassador-"Christology"
Phanatik-"Incredible Walk" and "Party Over Here" are top notch CDs
Rock
just like hiphop you want to listen to more conscious artists. go old school like Jimi Hendrix or listen to '90s era rock

Well it depends on what you would consider rap.
A great rising artist at the moment is Outasight. He mixes soul and funk with rap.
Outasight.

Some rock for you:
- Jimi Hendrix
- The Beatles
- The Rolling Stones
- Pink Floyd
- Jefferson Airplane
- The Who
- Led Zeppelin
- Queen
- CCR
- Eric Clapton
- Radiohead
- Genesis
- Gentle Giant
Rap? I can't say it's my thing, but Soulja Boy is a hilariously bad rapper.
Also i guess you'd like 2Pac, Dr Dre, Biggie, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco and Ice Cube
