Worn-Out Phrases And Colloquial Memes.

We all hear them. There are certain catch phrases made popular through forums, videos, television, and other sources. These words and phrases have permeated culture and are now stereotypical and thrown around in everyday semantics.

Some of the phrases I have heard include:

- That's what she said.
- No homo.
- The cake is a lie.
- Using the word 'gay' to describe things that aren't cool or fun (eg. "That's gay!").

I know there are many, many others.

1. What are some meme-phrases you know? If we could avoid racial slurs, that would be great.

2. How often do you say these phrases?

3. Finally, why do people say these phrases?

Personally, I don't say meme-phrases very often unless I'm making fun of the people who say them. I might say 'that's what she said' when the moment is absolutely perfect, but I don't call things gay or say 'no homo'.

My personal belief is that people who say these phrases are trying too hard to be popular. When will people learn that creating memes, rather than using memes, leads to popularity?
1. Well, I always use Good for you in real life. I also use google it in real life too.

2. I use them so much, my friends and even people I don't know, know me for saying it.

3. I'm not exactly sure, but it's probably somehow giving them a feel of succession, or making them feel a bit more "witty".
1. Dat ass, for one.

2. Rarely ever.

3. People are morons... or what mockingod said... whatever...
1. Epic Fail

2. I don't use phrases really.

3. I think people say them just to be in the crowd or because they think it sounds cool (Which it doesn't)

Pretty much what you posted and the people above me.

2. How often do you say these phrases?

Enough to be noticed for saying them but not enough to be singled out for overusing them.

3. Finally, why do people say these phrases?

I believe it's a challenge of political correctness. In no way are people attempting to use these phrases to seem cool and popular, I mean, unpopular people who have virtually no friends use these phrases, but because it's become a wrong in our society people are sick of. It's phrases like this that make us question why we can't say them in the first place. Is there anything wrong with using the word "gay" to describe something negative if you're perfectly fine with homosexuals? Personally I believe there isn't. I know a lot of you think there's a lot wrong with it and I respect that, but that's just how I see it.

For meme-related phrases it's because they think they're funny and they think the meme is funny. If I watch a movie and I like a certain scene, will I be reiterating it to my friends? Yes. The difference with the internet is that instead of a couple of friends it's millions of people so you get sick of it quicker. I mean, we all loved nyan-cat, right? How quick did we get bored of that?

I hope we can avoid trouble in this thread. :V

Oh, by the way, you guys might be interested in this show: A Can of Worms, that's airing in Australia tonight. They ask questions to the general public of Australia in regards to phrases and political correctness issues such as watching porn, teaching your kids there is no God and other cool stuff people question.

1. Too many to list, but they're obvious anyway.
2. A few times, more in real life than on the internet.
3. I guess they're used to using those phrases online so they resort to applying them in real life as well. I'm using "lol" in real life whenever something funny happens, but not the kind of thing that would make you laugh loudly. There's nothing special in using them that would make you "cool", I simply use them because.

Nicely worded. I use the word "gay" myself often to describe something stupid. And I'm not a homophobic. Though I wouldn't like this to turn into an argument.
1. I've heard a few of these phases, though I can't remember any in particular, other than the use of the word gay to describe stupid things.

2. As far as I know, I don't really use these meme-phrases other than the ones I made up (like the one in my signature). I only use my personal meme-phrases when I'm around my brothers, friends, or on the internet, though.

3. I think most people use these phrases either to be funny or they are trying too hard to be popular.

  1. plenty of in-jokes, internet memes, and perpetual rehashes of either or both.
  2. often enough.
  3. personally, it's because me and the two friends that i do this with are all internet junkies (albeit at varying tiers of browsing content). i would assume it's because we get a kick out of particularly funny memes, or memes used in funny or fitting situations, and so have this perpetual competition to think of the funniest rehash to make at any particular moment. as trashy as it is, it has its own brand of non-sequitur humour that i've grown almost fond of.

it's statements like this that really get me. "creating memes"? 9.9 times out of 10, trying to create a meme on purpose leads to humiliation and failure. one does not just walk into mordor create a meme; it's usually a joke or comment that is funny or awesome in a certain way that happens to sit in someone's mind and catches on. furthermore, even if you mastered the art of putting together jokes like that, it would still require the cupport of a large community to go ahead and blow it all out of proportion (read: 4chan). memes just happen, really.

and if you really think it's all about the popularity, then once again, that's incorrect. as it's been proven time and time again, memes that are really worthless are labelled as failed memes and those who use them get a reputation as equally useful towards the great quest for the lulz. memes that have much more value (or backing from particularly funny anons, mind you) are the ones that thrive for longer. yes, there will always be die-hards and there will always be haters for every party, but as always, it's the extremist few that shout the loudest and if you ignore it (or sigh condescendingly, whatever works) it eventually goes away.

like some sort of especially malicious but utterly harmless cosmic bully.

whose power level is in excess of nine thousand, and really likes lying about cake.

That's the thing, though, only you know that. When someone sees someone else associating something bad with the word "gay" they'll also assume that it works in reverse...not much you can really do about it, though, unless you want to go around carrying a big sign reading "I am not a homophobic" everywhere you go. Yes, I know you said you didn't want an argument started over this, so I hope this wasn't too argumentative a post. EDIT: To clarify, I'm not saying it's a problem with you, I'm saying it's a problem with how stereotypes and such are set up. You're judged before you're known, etc.

On-topic, though, I don't hear memetic phrases being repeated too often (other than what Camerin already listed), though I do hear "epic" and "epic failure" thrown around rather frequently. It's probably just because "epic" is considered, well, epic, so people mindlessly use it thinking it will make whatever they say next sound cooler.
