I wasn't sure where to put this, so if it's in the wrong place, please move it to the correct place.
So, if you get a dropbox account, and put some files in it, will they be publicly available to other people? Or will they be private unless I directly link to them?

All files that you place in your Dropbox are private, so long as they aren't placed in your public folder. If files are placed in your public folder, we (as in people of the public) cannot see these files unless you link the file or folder to us.
So really you kind of answered your own question.

Additionally, in order to link your file, you would click the downward facing arrow that you get when you hover over the file then choose to copy the public link, rather than clicking on the file and copying the link in the address bar.
