Tip: Test your levels as all forms of Mario (small, super, fire, cape). If it's possible to enter a level with Yoshi, make sure to test that as well.

Do you want to have an old-school "jump right into game" kind of beginning? Or do you want a briefing of what you are doing?

Which makes me think: What's the level system of this game going to be? I would say to count out an overworld. Also, make you levels long and full of exploration, just like Metroid NES.
I was thinking maybe some sort of familiar, smooth introduction. Perhaps making the very beginning the same (the first room in Brinstar with the Morph Ball) would work.

As for the actual introduction level (C5), I'd say some cutscene with the actual mission would be enough.

On a different topic, I think you may want to explain things a little better than the original Metroid did (what did they explain? Oh, right, nothing). Maybe you could make something like, when you get a new item, it would cause layer 3 to appear onscreen, giving a small explanation of what the item does (I believe Super Metroid did this the same way). For instance:

ICE BEAM
Shoot to freeze enemies for a short period of time

OR:

MORPHING BALL
Press (Down) to morph and explore narrow passages

Also, I think it'd be a good idea to replay Metroid to study it's level design. Although there are some things that you shouldn't do, like remaking the same room 10 different times (damn you Norfair!). Metroid tends to be heavily based on platforming, even in the Prime series (<3 Prime), so it seems like a good idea to do the same. Also, some well placed puzzles seem like they could do really well in this hack.

Judging from the videos he posted, it doesn't seem like there will be an OW. But I do agree, that the levels should be particularly long, compared to most hacks. But, how can you make separate rooms without using separate levels? That would probably take a good amount of ASM to make the door sprites, and to make the screen scroll whenever you go through them.

Making more progress. Things I'm still working on:

1. Gun
2. Power-up (Need to make the music continue after collecting.)
3. Few small things, like the random zero in the status bar.

The only problem I see, is that the speeds for the gunshots seem off. I'd say, that if you changed the speed of the "bullets" a little (what would you call those, anyway?), you should be fine. You did say that you were still working on that, though.

This ends my wall of text, hope it helped though!
Will you be using the original 8-bit GFX or are you going to have someone "update" them to 16-bit... or are you just using Super Metroid GFX... or what?
He's using the original 8-bit GFX.
Yeah I'm gong to use 8-bit GFX from the original Metroid, and I might also have some custom GFX.

Also thanks for the ideas! I think I know how I'm going to start the game now, so thanks!
Do you have all of the GFX you need ripped?
No, I don't. But I did rip this a while back, so it's something.
Ok, I see youre going for 8 bit gfx, but will you only use ripped gfx?
He's said that it has a chance of including custom GFX, but I'm not sure what he guarantees...
Two sprites down!! Link.
Hoorah, Metroid progress!

It's great to see the sprites, and the graphics for them. You coded them yourself?

EDIT: This is my 900th post?

Is the Zoomer a Spike Top replacement?

Really awesome to see Metroid sprites in an SMW hack. Can't wait to see levels.

Yeah, why make a WHOLE new sprite, when one, almost the same, already exsists in SMW.

Also:

More!!! I'm on a roll!!! Ignore the weird explosion.

Whoa you sure work fast!
Cool sprites you recreated :D (I bet you're going to code a fourth one today)

This is really cool. I'm not a fan of those NES Samus graphics but no big deal. I like the shooting, it looks good, aside from the glitch graphics but of course youre fixing those.
I fixed alot of things, including the gun, maybe I'll post a video soon of what I have done. In the mean time:

More Enemies:

Zeb.

and...

Waver and Reo.

Cool. This sounds very original, and I'm certain it'll be good :)
Great looking sprites, as usual. Do you still have many to go?
Well right now I'm only doing the sprites that are going to be in level 1.

Ok here is a new video. This time it's more than just enemies. Link.
