Welcome. This is the thread for my new hack "Choconilla Paradox". Here you'll see the newest informations about the hack plus screenshots and videos. Choconilla Paradox is most about pimping the good ol' SMW graphics up to look better. But that's not all. Another basic idea of this hack is good leve design. Every level will be at least 15 screens (in hex) long. Also CP features a lot of SMB's graphics. I reshaded some of those graphics to fit into the style of CP. It also has HDMA, some patches, (for now one) hex edit, custom music, some self drawn graphics and custom sprites.(Those are only some atmospheric ones like wavy HDMA and leaf cluster sprite) The story isn't thought out yet but I'll think about that later. It will not be a big part of the game so that's not big of a problem for now. I have one level finished and two others are in work. I guess thats enough text for now. Have some screenshots + the video of the first level.

And thats a part of the main Overworld. Who can guess what the second level will be like?

So that's all for now. I'll bring out a demo when I got like three worlds done I guess. I don't think that you'll see the demo this year. Maybe at the next C3. That would be perfect. Comments and criticism are welcome.

First off... I love the overworld!
Second, I really like the level design, especially the BG in the first 3 pictures. This looks really nice, I can't exactly think of anything you would need to improve on.

So far this is looking like it's going to be a great hack. There are no visible errors in either the OW or any of the levels. The idea of a "choconilla" hack, with mainly vanilla graphics but add-ons to spice it up, is a very good one. I can't wait to see what this will develop into!
All the pallettes in the level look really awesome.
I like the idea of using Grassland tiles in an underwater level, the darker pallette gives off a good sense of depth that your in water.

The OW looks very well made. Nice work!

edit: Well the OW I can hardly see the differents colors in the grass/rock

Also what should I use as the second level?



If the forth level is an underwater one it would be a nice transiiton to use the level with water tiles in. The other level could be used after.
I'm liking it so far, dude. So here's the low-down. The first level looks, eh, except for that last screenshot, which looks pretty good. The second level looks pretty boring. However the palette there is looking really good, don't let the level design take a backseat to the imagery. That's pretty much my critique of all your screenshots you showed. They are decorated very nicely, and the palettes are very warm and nice looking, but the level design is kinda boring looking. I'm sure when I get my hands on a demo it will probably be a lot better than the current presentation. The OW looks very good though, no complaints there. But right now it's looking pretty good, but not quite great, yet. Keep doing what your doing.

Whoa... a "Choconilla" hack? Sounds like mine (vanilla GFX - Spiny, but could change, + custom sprites/music/palettes)
Those screenshots look great too!

Btw, did you take my suggestion for your second level (the screenshots anyway)?

Very nice work here, Underway. The graphics look very appealing, and your custom ones fit in nicely. I'm looking forward to this game.

awesome as usual, but it would be better with a slightly darker outline.
Am I the only one who's a little 'eh' with Mario's palette? He's got this one shade of red that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Except for the black color, which is now gray. I think that's what's making it look odd.

Also white -> pinkish color
