With the final results coming just around the corner (maybe), it's time to start thinking about the collab hack. Given that Alexander isn't around, it seems that it's under my sole direction. So with that, planning must begin.
The biggest thing I foresee that needs to be done is the OW. We do not yet know how many levels there will be, and which levels will be 'in' the collab. However, I think discussion will help decide the style of the OW. Should the levels be linear? Should they consist of branching paths? Do we have any OW designers willing to make it (I could do it, but I'm not exactly known for my OW designing prowess)? What setting should it be?

I would be willing to make it or at least part of it. I don't understand what you mean by setting, but I was thinking maybe something similar to the last Kaizo collab (with the free movement map).

I'd say the first thing we need to decide on is if we're going to do free movement RPG-style OW or not. If we are, that makes things easy: just draw something up, tile it, slap the things in place and call it a day.
If not, then the levels would probably be organized both by setting (lava, snow, plains, etc) and by difficulty. The question would be, which is more important? If we want to sort by area first and difficulty second, then first gather all the levels into worlds based on area, and sort them based on the overall difficulty of the entire world. On the other hand, if difficulty is the more important sorting factor, you can easily simply sort the levels based on the scoring in Difficulty category, with loose adjustments for an attempt at having a theme for each world. We could even go VIP-style and just order the levels by difficulty, say "fuck you, continuity", and make an overworld that just sort of acclimates the levels. (For instance, there's a random snow world in VIP5 World 1, and it's just got a tiny patch of ice just hanging out on the OW.)

What about we have both a free movement overworld and a linear overworld?

Well, unless you mean sort of a "beat these levels in any order to get to the next area", or "beat all the levels to get to a secret zone", then since we can only have one overworld, it would mean two separate releases. And I'm sure that would make people frustrated.

No, I pretty sure it's possible to have both. I was thinking of that Mario would start on a submap and he has two pipes to pick from. One pipe would lead to the free movement overworld while the other pipe would lead to the linear one. Also, I'm willing to make the overworld, I made a overworld for my hack and I say I did a really good job on it:

That's pretty nice looking.
Honestly, a half RPG style and half linear would be pretty weird, but kind of cool.

Didn't Raocow once do a hack like that? With some points with the RPG style and others with the paths.

The only thing I found a little weird, was the shadowing, but I guess I would do the same. AWESOME OW though.
Also, I think as far as level order goes, I think we should make an effort to go from easiest to hardest.

Still implying that we're going to do a linear map, a la most SMW hacks and the original, instead of an RPG-style free-access map a la the 2010 Kaizo collab. (which I still need to get around to LPing...)
I say we set up a poll to decide between linear and RPG, and then deal with the nuances of each after we've decided what we're doing.

Well, I actually think that we should go from easiest to hardest, but I also think there should be intersections and such, making it so you can access various levels at once, and have the easier levels in areas where you can't devide off.
EXAMPLE:
Key -
o = easy
O = normal
x = hard
X = insane (such as I hate masks)
o > o > then a choice of... O or x > then an unavoidable o > etc., until we hit several x's, and reach X (then we go through the same pattern, except using x as the unavoidable).
Just a thought.

I think that we should have an RPG overworld because some of us arent insanely good at kaizo hacks (*cough* me *cough*). If it is an RPG style, than we can at least attempt all of the levels.
Also, Some people might think that we should put the levels from easiest to hardest, but I don't think thats a good idea:
1 - People will assume that they cant beat any level after the one they cant beat which means they wont even try all of them.
2 - Difficulty is relative to the player. For Example, swimming while bringing an object is pretty easy. However it becomes insanely difficult for me because I play on a keyboard (without slowdown and frame advance). My keyboard doesn't register more than 4 keys pressed at the same time. And i need to for swimming levels like that.

unrelated to overworld discussion but not really off-topic:
Checking the thread linked in the MLP Newspost, I noticed Maruhai had posted recently. So I sent him an annoying PM in all caps, telling him to go judge the freakin' submissions.
Would've posted in that thread, but can't really do that cause it's locked.
Hopefully we can has progress sometime this month.
YAY!

Yes. The results will come once I'm able to dedicate enough time to compiling the judging results.

So, is this going to continue, or are we waiting for the results first?

Do not use this thread as a replacement for the Discussion thread. The results are still pending, I've worked this entire weekend at a fundraiser for FIRST robotics.

I think he meant, is the OW discussion and/or creation going to continue. Well thats what I got from it anyway. (Unless you got it and I am just stating the obvious @__@)

Oh, I see. Well, OW development can easily continue alongside the results of the contest. So far, it seems that most people want a free-roam world, or some kind of choice between levels of similar difficulty? (Anyone who's played Super Monkey Ball Adventure, I believe there's certain doors which present a number of levels you must beat to open it, but you only have to beat some of them, or something, perhaps something similar to that?)

So, I take it this means the project died?
