Tip: Layer 3 backgrounds and tides disappear when you hit a message box, so plan your level around that. For example, you can add a sublevel without layer 3 at the start/midpoint, and include your message there.

Now you're making things bigger than I said. I didn't ask for "a ton of platforms", but a little more variation is just what I asked for. I never said the level is boring: it's just not as good as it could be. If you want to go make your levels like that, I won't stop you, but IMO great level design is something else. And for the record, NSMB 1-1 is a different case: it had new elements, new gimmicks, new powerups to introduce. But for an SMW hack, you most of the time don't have so many new things as in a completely new Nintendo game.
Right, my two cents. I'm sure you'll keep on going designing like that, so go ahead. No-one will stop you.

Mrdeppelman, that looks quite superb! The darky palettes look great, and the overworld has a lot of different ledges and heights. It's also perfectly decorated. The HDMA makes it all complete. I'm sure you'll get a pretty high place in that contest, great job! :>

Sorry if it sounded like I was making a big deal of it - really, I wasn't.

It's just that there isn't any other place in the level to put ledges and stuff.

You might say screen 2, but I am introducing the jumping Koopa to the player and the fact that you can use Koopa shells to your advantage, but is hazardous at the same time (and I'm also introducing Piranha Plants, but that's besides the matter)

Screen 6 & 7 might be a plausible place...but I don't know how I'll introduce the para Goomba un-menacingly then...

And I am reintroducing all of the SMW elements as if it's new to the player. We already knew how Thwomps act, but they were "introduced" to us in subsequent games in less menacing ways.

Just remade my submap:

Edited the palettes, put some decorations and edited almost all the parts that made you mind there was perspective errors.

Of course, an opened one:

Why do open OWs look better?

I'm feeling this submap is much full of decorations, but hope this is just me.

Your submap looks great. Keep up the good work.
Are you excited for JDCGames Collab this C3?
Damn right you are. :P

Anyway, onto why I'm posting.

JDCGames Collab Trailer

Above is a trailer for our collaboration hack, JDCGames Collab, which will be released in May for this C3. The trailer was designed by Jonny so good work for that. :D

The video will show a few levels that are in a collab and provide a bit more info so watch the video please. :)
Thanks.

Because they typically aren't overly cluttered and busy such as the ones Teo make.
Well, okay

Also JDC, this hack is looking epic and with variated themes. Can't wait to see it done :)
Giant Shy Guy: oho, I see now, looks pretty tough to add in some more platforms and ledges in that level... Weird how an LM view is so different from an ingame view. =O

Not a bad submap at all, Austin! Although you are missing some black lines here and there, it looks pretty good. The custom palette is also nice, so why don't you change the regular grass palette too? But yeah, great work.

JDC: Hey, that collab doesn't look bad at all! I'll be sure to check it out. Nicely done and good job on actually finishing a collab, you don't see people do that often. =>

...What? I absolutely have to disagree with you here.
I don't know why you think that doesn't look nice. It just shows how well you can actually create an OW with different types of ledges, etc. It doesn't look too busy at all: it doesn't even have decorations yet, and it still looks perfect. Perhaps you'd rather look at a too empty OW than a nicely stuffed one, but I certainly don't. Although it does look hard to actually add in levels there... =/
I don't know, but Teo, keep going man.

The ironic thing is that ,most landmases are smooth andnot clutered with cliffs and platforms, and its harder to make smooth/round landmasesin the OW editor, and thus deserve more credit.
Ofcourse, its always the same, it depends on the point of view...
Tile 4C from GFX05 + NSMB Grassland GFX + Creativity =

Meme obviously not included.
and for those that did'nt got it: it's for C3.

First level of my new hack. :3
Sting Chameleon eh? Looks nice. Did you rip it yourself? (otherwise there's really not a lot to talk about in that shot =/)
Looks very artistic. I'll keep an eye out for that one!
Yeah, it was directly ripped. Racing Stripe is awesome for that!
Levels are all empty at the moment as I just started working on the hack. :P

At first I wanted some kind of mix between original and SMAS styled hack but ended up going for a MegaMan styled hack. World themes are all up and done, just need to design levels and code the proper sprites, effects, blocks, etc. :)
Looks really good Ice Man. Ripped this next tileset with Racing stripe(I used it for the 1st Mr. Tuff rip). Here's the video:

Mr. Tuff temple rip. Read YouTube description.
Comments would be nice.
You used all the palettes??
No. The only free palette is 1.

There's one of your answers.

And another. It's way, way too mountainous for my liking.

Please don't make stupid assumptions like that to me.
JowTH: hey, that actually looks pretty badass. I'm sure I'll use it, it looks really well drawn. Good job! =>

Ice Man: splendid rip you got there. Really looking forward to that hack already! A Megaman styled hack is pretty great, I don't think I've seen that many on here.

Ripperon: woah! That really looks cool man! Pretty great rip you go there. =D

Wow, really? I think I'm totally going to ignore that now, your highness. >_>"

Yes, because making baseless assumptions off of someone being critical over a particular style of OWs is worth making something more personal than it needs to be.
