I guess I might as well make a thread for this, although don't expect updates very often.
Anyway, the hack. I started this about 6 months ago, but I didn't really make much progress. This is planned to be a somewhat short 'beginning' hack, so there will be 3 main worlds plus the final castle and post-game. Screenshots:

None of the W1 levels are finished yet, but they all have a basic template.

Screen 1: I don't see nothing weird here which is good.
Screen 2: The OW could have some work. It's a bit blocky and the palettes aren't the best. Why is the ground green btw?
Screen 3: Looks like it will be like a SMAS styled level. A BG would be nice for this level.

The ground is green because it's original.
It will have a BG soon. I did mention that it was unfinished.

Everything mostly looks great! I really like your title screen. The OW palette doesn't look the greatest though. I like the looks of that level, just add a BG that matches well with it and you are good to go. Any story to go with the hack MSL?

Yeah, there is, actually. It's rather long.
Here it is:
Mario is asleep.
He wakes up to find the ground shaking beneath his feet. What on Earth was happening...?
He goes to look outside, and he sees airships, tanks, and tons of enemies everywhere, and also Bowser, nearly dead, being dragged along the ground by strange people...
He turns away from the window, and sees a piece of paper on the floor.
It says this:

Dear Mario,
I need your help!
My bean factory exploded!
I was just walking to the factory to prepare for another day at work, when it just went KABOOM out of nowhere!
I heard from friends that the exact same thing had been happening in other places nearby. Then, I heard something overhead. I looked up, and saw what appeared to be a flying blue horse, with someone, or something, riding it. I did some research, and I think I know just who it is that is causing all the trouble. It is an evil sorcerer named Horsabus. Now, Mario, I request of you, please defeat this Horsabus and save the Happy Village before it too, is destroyed!

First Screenshot: The letters could use some work, but not too bad.
Second Screenshot: The yellow hurts my eyes a bit. Darken it. Also there is some perspective errors. Try make all the land the same size. Pretty bland, if you ask me.
Third screenshot: Why is there a floating AXE? Also I don't really like the edge of the bush there.
All in all, not bad, but could use more work.

The axes are Dragon Coins for the level since the SMAS graphics screw up the regular ones. That will be in a message box.
I changed the palette of the overworld and changed it a little.

My, don't use the default colors that come in the window. Try to create your own. Using bright pink and purple is bad. Make it a bit gray-ish (a bit) or bluer.

Nice story =D Also I agree that the palettes aren't that good. Use something less eye searing. Try matching the palettes with the levels on that land mass, but do not revert back to the original palettes, those were boring.

but i dont understand why the ground is turgiose, and the cliff end is blue...
but its okay nonetheless
Figured out what i dont like. I think the water is too dark of a blue. also the purple would be better if you added Blue-ish purple water
(waste of a milestone post. need something for 500....)

Well, the pink ground would be good if the water would be purple but the green version is also good.

Anyway, screenshots of the first area of the second level:









Please comment, I really don't want to have to quadruple post.
Also, if you're wondering, the screen with the water had a Dragon Coin in it, and invisible blocks. I just so happened to take the last screenshot while Mario was still in his 'invincibility frame', making it look like he's not there.
