This had been paused for a while, but I have returned to working on this hack after something unexpected came up in Hertz Donut. This is my first non-SMW hack and it is designed to be as unforgiving and brutal as I can make it while still being able to beat it myself, even if I have to abuse slowdown (no tricks that only a TASer would try are required. That means no shoulder pumping, no X-ray climb, no Torizo skip, or anything else both complicated and frame perfect. It's not an edge hack). Every item is given as you need it and never more often. You cannot afford any unnecessary damage or shoot unnecessary missiles. I focus more on extreme difficulty over exploration and finding secrets. Some examples of required tricks/glitches:
-speed ball
-green gate glitch
-infinite bomb jump
-avoid fast moving instant kill enemies in confined spaces
-grapple beam acrobatics
-wall jump acrobatics
-speed through heated rooms without varia suit
-Maridia/Waridia w/o gravity suit (have not made any progress on this area yet)
Some screenshots (may be subject to change):

Not only do you have to hurry up before dying of heat due to not having a varia suit, but this part requires the green missile gate glitch.

You have no power bomb or ice beam, so those Metroids are the victor (yes, there's two of them).

I forgot the spikes do nothing before you beat Phantoon. I can't really think of anything else creative for Phantoon, but I feel I must include him because of the screenshot before this one. I'm not supposed to have the varia suit or the grapple beam yet. I forgot to check the test room options.

I also changed the region names.

Required Glitches? I'm sorry, but that does not make a fun hack.
Savestate abuse the only way to not rage at your game? No thank you. Make a quality Metroid hack with a moderate difficulty so more people will play it.
MODS, TRASH THIS THREAD, PLEASE! I'm still making this hack and you will not stop me, ever! That's what the filebin is for! Fuck this thread! This is about as likely to go downhill as the 'would you rather' thread. If this forum is specifically for 'real game hacks' rather than the 'kaizo' kind, then trash it, please. I was not aware and you can't just change the rules in the middle of THE GAME! I have no plans of starting over or quitting.
I don't remember if I said this before since my memory is so bad, but TRASH THIS THREAD!

Kaizo hack that's not Mario? Unacceptable, how could you!

But seriously, are you ignorant like that on purpose or do you really believe that nobody would want to play a Kaizo-difficulty Metroid hack?
If there's so many fans of that difficulty level in this community for SMW hacks, then why do you believe that it's unacceptable for any other game?
He doesn't need to cater to every single person out there, you don't need to like this, he explicitly stated that it's a Kaizo-difficulty hack, which should have clued in that this is not supposed to be played by the general audience, let alone a broad one.
I mean geez, for being the first of its kind I know of, it doesn't have any graphical glitched, unlike Kaizo Mario (though who knows if that was the first one and not just the first famous one), and nobody has a problem with that!

Christ!

e: I just noticed the "quality" part in aterraformer's post, and WOW, that is the most dicky thing I've read today and I've bloody been in furthreads on /b/ all day, this guy HAS put effort into his hack and I don't see how you could view this as low-quality, looking at all the testing he seems to do, the, as already stated above, appealing visuals (at least not appalling like for example kusottare mario or however you spell that or any of diddyboy's hacks), thought-out level design (that's how it sounds at least, couldn't test it myself for obvious reasons) and even little details like the area names he showed off.
How dare you call this being of no good quality.

Awesome I was looking for a good Kaizo hack. I might get my TAS equipment out once you release this hack so I can set the first top score.
Okay, I'm in a better mood now. If anyone saw that other post about 'trash it please' they can disregard. What I'm thinking is, for the Phantoon fight, I might add rising and falling acid and have to abuse wall jump every time the acid rises. The fight will somehow need to be a no-damage run, and for me, Phantoon is already hard enough as it is in the original Super Metroid (no item drops will be given for this boss).
Required glitches to continue? Looks like it's going to be a Kaizo hack.

If Kaizo SMW Hacks are acceptable then why shouldn't a Super Metroid Kaizo Hack be not ecceptable? This wouldn't have any sense.

Lots of spikes here :P. I probably won't play it because I don't know many glitches in Super Metroid.
I actually have no idea when I will finish this thing, but it should be sometime before the New Year, maybe around November, if not before. I only have a rough idea of how long it's going to be. The bosses I know will be included (probably in this order):
-Sporespawn
-Phantoon
-Crocomire
-Ridley
Estimated hack progress: ~65%
With the perceived inflexibility combined with my current skill level at working with S.M.I.L.E. I can't really think of very many different creative ways to modify the boss fights, so those bosses are probably all I will include. I had been thinking about requiring things like Torizo skip and X-ray climb, but I can't even do those myself, and what's the point in making a hack if not even the creator can beat it?
A couple more screens:

The acid rises and falls. I have not fully tested the boss room as it is in the screenshot yet. For some reason the acid disappears when Phantoon appears to fight, but it's still damaging. Also, some parts of Phantoon disappear sometimes.

I have made the atom indestructible to any of your available weapons and able to kill Samus in one touch. I probably will have to take a hit from the spikes to make it to the door. This killer atom is exactly why I nearly failed college chemistry.

Just because people play it, doesn't mean they necessarily enjoy themselves too much playing it. Especially those who plan on recording it. TASers have no problem recording it, since their videos end up looking spotless, but Let's Players, who will, without a doubt play this if it gets too much attention, and it will be uninteresting and boring, since after all, it's just a guy saying absolutely nothing while reloading a state over... and over... and over. There really is no challenge to these Kaizo hacks if you plan on using savestates. Just reload the state, that's what everyone does. So simple even a monkey could do it. TASers don't impress me, because of this. It may be difficult to pull of these tricks in real time, no savestates, but doing them in a TAS and showing off, thinking you're so cool doing things with tools no one else can do in real time, it really is just a waste of time. It may seem off topic to talk about TASers and LPers here, but let's be honest, who else is going to play this for fun? But whatever, keep working on it if it makes you happy. What do I know? I'm just some random dude on the internet.

There ARE people who will find this fun. I don't care about it, (not a metroid fan) but I can see how others would enjoy this. Just because you don't find it fun doesn't mean others don't.

Anyway, it's looking pretty good. Seems quite polished.
Another screenshot:

You must do some back and forth wall jumping. Thankfully I took out the water or else it would literally have been impossible. This is shortly after the ice beam.

I also ran into another problem: as it stands now, the end of the hack is not the ship, but a room with an item that you can't go any further after. I don't really know how to make a proper ending, and I want Ridley to be the last boss. And yes, all you get as far as energy tanks go is ONE but that's almost pointless because the average common mook is stronger than Mother Brain ever was!

Yeah, this is probably one of those hacks that will look better TAWed than LPed.
Off topic as well, but I started on making a 'regular' hack of SMW, so these TAW only hacks are not all I do apparently.
Cool. I've never played Super Metroid hacks, but this one might be interesting.
I haven't worked on this hack in a while (well, it seems like that to me because I'm fast paced like that), but I have started to pick up on it again, and here's another screenshot:

Follow the Rinka down, don't let it go too far off screen, and you'll have to freeze it and use it as a stepping stone when you get to the bottom.
I think overall I'm in the latter part of the level design phase (pretty much finished with Waridia, almost finished with Bitchstar and Unfair, and whatever I named Tourian, but I still need to test Tourian some more. Out of the regions, the Fucked Ship is the least complete). After that, I guess then play through it to see if I need to add more things like health, missiles, or super missiles, for I intend to only give items as needed, and many of the enemies are invulnerable AND kill Samus in one hit. I also need to test the bosses more, but after I finish the general level design.
