I've been stuck with Vista on my computer ever since I got it back in '09. I heard they're giving out beta versions of Windows 8, and have been considering partitioning my hard drive and installing it. However, I have a few questions before I do that.
1: I've been having some problems virus-wise with my computer recently. I just barely got everything fixed (I think), but I want to know - if I have to use System Recovery (I think that's what it's called) to reset my hard drive to how it was when I first got my computer, will it affect my partitioned portion of the hard drive?
2: Continuing off of the previous scenario, could I transfer files from my Vista partition to my Windows 8 partition to save them while I use System Recovery, then transfer them back?
3: If a virus hits one partition, would it affect anything in the other? The one that got me earlier locked out all my antivirus programs so I couldn't run them, but if I had two partitions, couldn't I run them off of the other partition if that happens again?
4: What would happen to my beta version when the retail version of Windows 8 comes out? Wouldn't it lock up or something to make me need to pay for the retail version? I'm a college student right now, and can't even afford to upgrade to Windows 7, hence my still using Vista. I don't want to lose an entire portion of my computer just because I can't afford to upgrade.

1. No, a System Restore on either install will not affect the other.
2. System Restore doesn't touch your files anyway, so it won't delete them. You can certainly move files between partitions, though.
3. Maybe. I'm not sure how well viruses will fare on Windows 8, but they'll probably wreak havoc on both installs.
4. It would probably lock up, so be sure not to put anything important in there. This is more of a preview than a working OS, so I would just recommend trying it out and playing with it, rather than do serious work on it (or, at least keep two copies of your important stuff).

The beta version will expire at a certain date, but it very likely won't be the release date of the retail version. I downloaded the beta of Windows 7 when it came out and it didn't expire until June 1, 2010, 7-ish months after the release of the retail version (October 22, 2009).

Now I have seen WIndows * before. My Uncle from California works with computers for a living (he's also given me an awesome laptop for practically nothing!), but my new laptop (really its a HP Pavilion Etertainment Notebook (HP Pavilion dv 1000) beforehand held a preview build of Windows 8 Beta. Eight Beta isn't much to explore (especially when you don't have wireless going thru it).
I'm not passing judgment until the full version is sold to consumers in mid 2012, but the Start Menu is a separate "window". Of course with the Beta I have, it does not allow you to make it sleep, or shut down, thus when you want it off, you'll have to manually turn the power off, which overtime will damage the computer.
The Beta from what my Uncle Ric told me will expire after a month after activation, and then you'll be forced to uninstall the OS and install a different OS like 7, Vista, XP, or other Windows or Mac products...
