I've been working on 2 of my hacks for about half a year now on 1.82 and I want to switch to 1.90 now. Are there any things I need to do beside backup my roms on a flash drive? I haven't created/tested any ips patches of my games yet,(I've tested all levels) so I'm wondering if there is anything important I need to do before I switch.

So far I think its just test LIPS patch and backup rom.
Nope, it's completely safe. Use the backup just in case, though.
There hasn't been any reported major issues (or issues at all for that matter) with 1.9. Assuming you're currently using 1.8, of course.

Why on a flash drive specifically?
Just put the copy of your ROM into the same folder or a specific folder for backups (that you should always have anyway)?
Eh, it's good that he has a copy of his hack data on a flash drive. What if your hard-drive fails or something?

well when you end up working on 2 roms at once you can forget which one is which sometimes. Also I have a practice rom where I just mess around with the overworld and stuff, once I accidentally messed up my main rom's overworld >,<
I figure its best to be sure and go flash drive every time for backing up.

edit: keep in mind most hacks are titled Super Mario _____ or Super ____ World so they all kinda look alike when selecting them with LM.

Advising against backups on other stuff like a flash drive is not recommend. Although I get your point.

However, there's maybe ONE thing that can screw up:

HOWEVER this only happens, if:

People have mostly already answered it for you, but just to clear it up further... regarding the "black" palettes in the overworld, that's an intentional change from back in version 1.80. The colors that were there previously were not actually defined by the overworld, but just left over colors from a level. Which meant you couldn't depend on those. You can use a custom overworld palette now if you actually want to set them, just make sure to turn the path fade effect off if you really plan to use them.

As for the layer 1 overworld tiles, again that's a change from 1.80. GFX files 8 and 1E in prior versions were technically 4bpp but only allowed to use half the palette. They can now use the full palette, but they must be converted if they were extracted using versions of LM before 1.80. LM normally converts those for you once when you extract the GFX, but after that it's up to you to remember not to replace them with old copies. It's also possible that the automatic conversion will not be triggered if at some point you already edited your pre-1.80 copy of file 1E in an attempt to use colors that weren't previously possible to access. In that case, you may have some manual recoloring to do.

So if this doesn't happen, you're fine.
