Higurashi is a series of Japanese VNs (Visual Novels). It is an interesting blend of horror and mystery, that is unusual in that takes place in a number or parallel worlds, where similar events take place that lead to tragedy. The protagonists of the story all have dark secrets in their pasts that sometimes make them go insane, but they work towards conquering the tragedy and discovering the TRUE culprit behind the "curse of Oyashiro-sama" (no relation to the user "Oyashiro-sama", who is probably a Higurashi fan). It also had an amine and manga adaption, which were good, but not as good as the VNs. It is my personal favorite anime/manga/vn series, due to its complex symbolism and intriguing storyline. I was just wondering if anyone here has also read/watched Higurashi, and if they want to talk about it.

Keep in mind that it can be quite gory at times, and also can be scary and/or depressing.

I tried reading the visual novel but ... damn, it was just too hard. I would've rather had a book or something, but I didn't know it had a -manga-. I might check that out.

What I like most about Higurashi is the concentration on contemporary torture rather than just hacking and slashing. The show does have the occasional death by stabbing and whatnot, but you know you're in for a real thrill when one of the early forms of torture were ripping nails out while strapped to a plank in an underground prison.

I only ever watched the first season and got up to Watanagashi (I think) in the VN, but I did enjoy it immensely.

The first season also has one of my favourite OPs. It's just ... amazing.
It's a pretty solid series. The anime is meh and I haven't played much of the VNs but the manga is very well done. I would definitely recommend the manga over the anime, it's more suspenseful and scarier. The anime doesn't always get the atmosphere right and the animation is subpar. Very good series though. Umineko no Naku Koro Ni is also quite good, although it's focus is much more on the mystery and supernatural aspects than the horror.

Out of curiosity, what did you find hard about reading the VNs? Was it the fact that they were so incredibly long and detailed? Anyway, glad to see that you are a fellow fan.

I agree completely. The first season's opening is so great and perfectly captures the feeling of the question arcs. The only OPs that I like better are Resonance and Paper Moon from Soul Eater.

I haven't actually read the manga, but I heard that it was much more true to the VNs. My biggest problem with the anime is that it lacks the complex symbolism and amazing writing of the VNs, and because it doesn't go into the back story as much, the last arc (Festival Accompanying Chapter) doesn't make much sense if you only watch the anime. Also, a few of the best scenes were left out or truncated severely, and the soundtrack is underwhelming other than the first OP. They should have just used the music from the VNs.
Yeah, the VN was just too draining to get through with all the detail. The music was quite frustrating to listen to endlessly too, but turning it off would've defeated the purpose of a visual novel.

I should really watch Kai. :\
