Tip: When making your overworld, mix the terrain up! Angled land and multiple colors looks much more interesting than square land and plain colors.

guess what? im working on a fantastic hack which will feature custom music in a slightly later version. you don't need ASM, blocks, or sprites! just some custom music, Map16 custom blocks that are clever, and some fun levels! that's what im aiming for! my great and fun exmaple of a hack which the first demo will completley change every level in the yoshis island submap. may not seem much, but it's fun if you ask me! the first demo, which will be version 10.0, which everyone will know that it will not feature custom music. that's gonna have to wait until 12.5 or even 15.0, but other than that, have fun! will be uploaded very soon. tomorrow to be exact!
(and 1 month later, here i am lying about the release date!)
NOTE: ALL UPDATES ARE POSTED ON THE PICTURE GALERY!

I can't really judge without any screens. To make a proper screen, in-game, press F1, then save as PNG format, then upload it to a photo-hosting site.
I bet everyone would like to see some screenshots. I can't say anything about this hack. I need to see what you made so far.
Don't take this the wrong way, but don't try launching yourself too high with your first hack. I understand that attempt, but the thing is that, well .. it doesn't work. I mean, it's your first hack. It's just a warm-up, really. There are some occasional exceptions, but well. I thought I was going to do just that, but never actually got a single level finished in my old hack.

So yeah, throwing my thoughts out there.

i see where you're going with this! i should proably pratice with a backup of my hack, for training! use addmusic, find a problem, make another backup of the actual ROM, and do it all over again until the music works, test the hack, find some flaws, go back into lunar magic and find the flaw, and test again! when you feel like you're ready, release the hack. i'll think i'll save the music until version 2.25!

for now, it's Map16 + lunar magic!
Just want to say that with hack threads, if you don't have screenshots, a mod will post saying "you have 24 hours to post screenshots or your thread will be closed" or something along the lines of that. Just want to remind you of that.

oh man...i think im pushing myself too far! why?:

mario/luigi tileset ripped from mario & luigi: superstar saga

custom music abuse planned in a rather early version

Map16 over use!

rushed custom levels,

planned to be ported to super mario all stars + SMW,

and level testing every 5 edits or so!

it's a little too far, right? i mean come on!
i just joined a month ago!

should i start with something more simple?

I think based on your screenshots, you probably are at the simple stage. There's nothing wrong with being ambitious, though -- my advice is to keep track of everything you're doing and make lots of backups. That way, if you mess something up, it's not so hard to take a few steps back.

I would advise against porting to a SMAS ROM, because there just isn't the ROM space available in an SMW ROM, and with what you want to do, you could run out of space quickly.

Can you link your screenshots in your thread so the images appear in your posts?
I have a question. Why is small Mario NSMB styled and big Mario not? I'd suggest to change big Mario and caped Mario too. I can't say anything about the level design because the only things I see in your level are some slopes.

i'll try getting the screenshots on the website itself!

bowser's hair IS red now, but this is before i did that pallete change.

oh, and by the way, just for the fun of it, i took a picture of mario standing in front of the lunar magic logo!!

Bland and boring level design, Small Mario GFX Clashes with Big Mario GFX, and Cutoff on title screen. I suggest you work more on your levels.

i'll go ahead and fix the title screen cutoff later,

but the small mario + big mario GFX clash is still a work in progress!

the level aren't that bland and boring, really!

i just caught some of the more boring parts, but it's gonna be fun

in the hack itself!

when the small / big mario GFX clash is fixed, i'll release the hack, which is very imcomplete right now.

This isn't a very good excuse.

Secondly, I think the M&L GFX clashes with the original SMW GFX. But then again, that's just my opinion.

okay, when you mean the M&L GFX clashes with the oringal SMW GFX, are you only talking about the mario GFX, or all the GFX in the game?

oh, and by the way, the GFX for the starman is now NSMB styled!
He's saying that the graphics you're using for Mario clash with the original Super Mario World graphics, in this case being the rest of the game.

In order to fix the clashing, you should either use Mario graphics that suit Super Mario World's graphics better, or find a replacement for the rest of the graphics.

i find graphic replacing kinda easy,

but redrawing the entire "allGFX" file is a whole new level, however, i've aslo redrawn the starman GFX and p-switch GFX

i plan on doing the same to the mushroom tomorrow!
What is with that small Mario sprite? You really need to fix it, it seems like it's just a squished big mario.

And it looks...competent, which is better than most first hacks, I suppose. And it's better to fix the cutoff now, since that gets it out of the way and you don't fall into the trap of endless "i'll fix it later" excuses.

i actully DID fix it, however...i just don't feel like putting it up, but yeah, i fixed it.
