Title is self explanatory. I think this thread will be restricted to movies.
I thought All Dogs go to Heaven wrapped up pretty nicely, but the sequel was pretty unnecessary. They were in heaven, and Charlie wanted to go back to earth. If that isn't blasphemy, then what is?
Another sequel to a Don Bluth movie, Secret of NIMH 2, was just poorly done and denser and wackier, and in name only. If you ever watch it, you'll soon realize how painfully true those bad reviews of it are. It's like the script writers were trying to write a crack fic and copying Disney's formula at the same time. I watched it on YouTube, but not all in one sitting.
I've never seen Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, but I've read horror stories about how bad it is compared to the original.
A general rule of thumb: if an animated childrens' movie is dark and/or emotional and it gets a straight to video/DVD sequel, the sequel is almost always more upbeat, kid friendly, and/or wackier.
I think this should be a fun topic.
If the reason is something familiar to a lot of people, I guess there's no need to explain why.

ALL the Air Buddies sequels. I saw an advert for Spooky Buddies and I wanted to puke. There's a reason why that shit is straight to DVD. Talking dogs are NOT ORIGINAL! We've got enough films of that! And as if that wasn't bad enough, they're making ANOTHER SEQUEL to that called Treasure Buddies. This franchise is shit. Disney, please just let it die now.

Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D. The movie was a bit excessive when it came to gore to begin with, but seriously, six sequels?
You need a lot more content to make a movie worthy of that.

The Scary Movie series (Scary Movie/2/3/4). It's just too crude of humor, sorry.

Shrek The Third. I thought It was awful. Though I guess going so far as to wish it never existed is a bit much. The original Shrek was just a masterpiece IMO.
Star Wars Episode 1 wasn't too great either, at least compared to 4-6.

"I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth."
Star Wars Episode II, Attack Of The Clones. It has one of the worst romances ever put on the big screen. Anakin and Padme had no reason to love each other besides physical attraction, yet the movie tries to imply there is something deeper that simply isn't there. Almost everything that happens in the film lies in direct contradiction to the original trilogy. It borrows heavily from "The Empire Strikes Back" and the whole film amounts to nothing more than Lucas playing about with some cool special effects. To summarise, everything in "The Attack Of The Clones" is wrong. If you would like to hear more about what is wrong with the Star Wars Prequels.... We all knew someone would link this eventually.
Unfortunately, the feature length "Clone Wars" film is even worse. Jabba The Hutt's son being kidnapped is not an exciting story worthy of Star Wars.

You know, XKCD tackled this, too, but I'm not quite sure why people don't like the sequels. I'm not much of a Matrix fan, but I thought they were pretty good movies (though it's been a while since I've seen them). Can someone enlighten me?

Because most sequels tend to leave things either hanging or just mess up the ending or resolved seen at the end of the very first film of a series. I know a couple of examples.
Firstly, at the end of the first High School Musical, everything was nice and resolved. Troy and Gabriella hooked up, the whole school came together, no longer separated by clashes between intelligence, sports, and performances. Not to mention, the after-credits scene showed Sharpay taking a liking to Zeke at last. Well, in High School Musical 2, things started out with Sharpay having an animosity towards Gabriella, which she didn't have at the end of the first movie and things started to go downhill when Sharpay once again tried to earn Troy's affections for herself.
Then, there's Pirates of the Caribbean. The first film ended with Jack's future looking bright, having reclaimed his ship, but subsequent movies pretty much threw it away. I saw all four films and despite all that though, they were still awesome.
In short, most movie sequels were better off not coming into play and messing things up. In some cases, they are good because fans would probably ask for them. But the sequels we don't want are probably the ones fans never asked for. Does that explain a few things?

I enjoyed 2 and 3. But it really should have ended there. 4 was horrible

I thought 2 was... passable. Not a horrible movie, but not that good either.
I thought 3 to be pretty bad.
Haven't seen 4. Don't plan to.
I think the continuity was a LOT better grounded in reality with a dash of the fantastic. Yeah there were zombie pirates, but the supernatural was treated as something unusual. Then came Davy Jones. And then Calypso. And then some extra dimensional place with lots of sand and stone crabs. What.
First movie sprinkled myth into the story. Following movies dumped it on with reckless abandon.
Coincidentally, the fourth Indiana Jones film (and second, to a degree) had the same problem. In 1 and 3, there were no magical or supernatural whats-its except the artifacts, and you're left throughout the movies wondering what exactly these things do (if anything at all). In 2 there's heart ripping 30 minutes in. In 4 there's magnetic skulls and mind reading.

Ah, if only for the sake of Captain Jack Sparrow getting his beloved Black Pearl back. Never seems to happen, does it?

All the movies that Disney makes should not have any sequels.
That's my word and I'll hold it 'till I die.

I can't think of any other sequels I really disliked. I enjoyed both Transformers movie sequels and all of the Pirates of the Carribean sequels. To be fair, however, the fourth installment of Pirates of the Carribean, although enjoyable, did feel fairly out of place compared to the rest of the movies in the series, and it probably wasn't really needed. But still, mermaids. <3

I believe that if a movie isn't designed to continue and leave you at the end believing there may be a sequel, then a sequel should never be made for it. I hate the idea of taking an awesome movie and, because the previous story is done and over with, taking a new twist on it. It just shouldn't be like that. We don't want to see something new spawning from a great movie we enjoyed, we just want what could continue off of it without a sudden and unusual way of doing it.
If a movie ends off on a bit of a cliffhanger, then a sequel may be needed. However, if everything is done and resolved, or even just feels like it, then a sequel definitely should not be made.
I really don't have any specific examples of bad movie sequels right now, but I recall hating quite a few.
