Tip: When making your overworld, mix the terrain up! Angled land and multiple colors looks much more interesting than square land and plain colors.

So I'm planning on starting a new hack (after talking a little bit with Andy and him convincing me I should go through with the idea). I just wanted to throw out a few concepts before I got on to designing anything. I wanted some opinions on my ideas, recommendations on where I should improve, etc.

Super Mario World: Alternate Reality Edition

Story

The game takes place in a world where the events of the original Super Mario World never happened. Mario recieves a letter from one of the Yoshi's that helped him reunite with Luigi as a baby.

The Yoshi invites Mario, Luigi, and Peach to vacation in Dinosaur Land's Stone City. An ancient city where the Yoshika tribe and the Toadora tribe live in harmony with eachother.

Mario arrives there only to be ambushed by Bowser and his demonic children who (you guessed it) kidnap Princess Peach again.

Mario and Luigi head straight to Stone City to make sure everybody else is alright but it's no good. It turns out that Bowser deployed his armada to capture all the Yoshi's and to seize the city. With only the city centre remaining out of Bowser's reach, it looks bleak.

The plot continues to progress through the other worlds.

Worlds

World 1: Stone City
The place where the initial disaster happens. Mario and Luigi must fight their way through Bowser's minions in order to save what's left in-tact of the city.

World boss: Iggy
World theme: Rock/Grassland

World 2: Dessicated Dunes
The Sandoad tribe is met and are very distressed that Bowser has spoiled their sacred land of sand! Outside the city the Mario Bros chase Bowser to the great Phartoad's pyramid where a horrible legendary curse lies in wait...

World boss: Morton
World theme: Desert/Ruins

World 3: Hot Foot Caverns
At the end of the desert lies the towering Volcano Incendia, home to the Yoshawt tribe. A tribe of red Yoshis! They claim that Bowser came through and kidnapped some of their tribe members too! The Mario bros venture through the caverns to appear on the other side of the volcano.

World boss: Lemmy
World theme: Cave/fire

World 4: Dino-Amazonia
Our heroes venture through the dinosaur infested jungles owned by the Amoyoshuka tribe. Another Yoshi tribe! The tribes people are unhappy because Bowser's minions have set up a giant generator in the forest and are mining it's natural resources to fuel Bowser's devilish plan.

World boss: Ludwig
World theme: Jungle/Grassland

World 5: Powdery Path
From the lovely warm jungles to the ice cold land of the Eskitoad's! This tribe use the snow to build iglus and become very distressed when Bowser decides it's too cold for his liking! As the Eskitoad's civilisation begins to melt, our heroes must press on before it's too late!

World boss: Roy
World theme: Ice/Snow

World 6: Sky Sanctuary
Our heroes take a launch star to the land of the Blooshi tribe (a tribe choc-o-block of blue Yoshi's!) to see how Bowser is warming up Powdery Path. When they get there, they're suprised to see that Bowser has forced the Blooshi tribe into abusing their powers of controlling the weather. It's up to the Mario bros to take out the koopaling head in command!

World boss: Wendy
World theme: Sky

World 7: Seahold
Our heroes make there way to the ships of Seahold in order to ask if the famed Mushrate tribe, the tribe of pirate Toad's, can give them a lift to Bowser's lands but it appears the armada of ships have been taken over by Bowser's minions! It's up to the bros to send Captain Koopaling back from where he came!

World boss: Larry
World theme: Water

World 8: Nightmare Void
Finally, the reason Bowser was generating all that energy in the jungle becomes clear. Mario and Luigi encounter Bowser's huge machine that can cause simulations of just about EVERYTHING! In order to get through Bowser's fortress they're going to have to put to work the experiences of everything they learned in the last 7 worlds!

World boss: Bowser
World theme: Castle/all aforementioned themes

World S: The Rainbow Switch
The Mario Bros decide to ease the tension in the bonus world! After hitting one of four coloured switches, the bros must fight their way through one last level, the route determined by which switch was hit!

Resource Usage

I plan to have the hack make use of:

- The original GFX as well as some custom ones that will match the original SMW's art style (This makes it chocolate. There's no such thing as strawberry or choconilla. Be quiet.)

- A fully custom soundtrack, much of which will be composed by myself (although I may make use of a couple of custom themes in the music section)

- Developing plot (which will be assisted by RPG Hacker's dialogue patch)

- Enough gameplay and replay value to keep you amused till the cows come home (moo?)

----------

Well that's the basic plan for the hack. I felt a WIP thread wouldn't be right since there's actually no progress besides this game plan yet...

Opinions?

That sounds like a great idea, MVS. It'd be interesting to hear ports of some of Shnabubula's Alternate Reality music in the hack, particularly his SMB1 1-1 and water themes.
Looks pretty good. I like the originality in the different tribe names. Two things are bugging me (the first one being minor),

It's Yoshies (or yoshis, but I believe yoshies looks more correct) not Yoshi's. 's is implying that Yoshi owns something, which is not how you are using it.

Second thing is the title of the hack, Super Mario World: Alternate Reality Edition. For one about fifty (I used control+f to find that out) hacks have Super Mario World in the title, and 150+ with just Super Mario. Just my opinion but your hack may get lost in obscurity with the rest of the hacks title Super Mario World: "Something or other". It may be better to come up with a different name. Having tribes in the title might be a good idea since you seem to have the word come up quite a bit when go through the plot/story

Whether you concider changing the name is up to you, if the hack looks/is good I'll play it either way.
Gamma, I have no intention of using any of Shnabubula's stuff though I might sneak something in if I get bored. The name is purely coincidence as well as lack of creativity.

As for the name, I chose to have Super Mario World in the title because this hack is basically my take on Super Mario World. What would have happened if I'd designed it.
Read through the whole thing; the ideas sound pretty neat. I defiantly like the World themes; they sound creative so far.
Nice ideas. A hack could turn out really nice with those ideas. :)
We were talking about this yesterday on irc and like I said then, I think it's a great idea. It's sort of like a "reimagining" of Super Mario World. The worlds you have outlined also sound great -- they definitely add some variety to this world. I also love still that you are sort of touching on the whole cartoon version of things but also making it cool. You're also sort of retrofitting the events of SMW into the bigger picture of things that has developed since 1991. All in all, this sounds great. The only minor complaint I have is that I don't like "Dampless Dunes" as a world name. I'll try to think of some ideas later, but "something else Dunes" would work much better, I think.

I really wanted something other than desert dunes, dusty dunes, dusty desert, etc since they've probably been used a million times. Any recommendations I am open to.

EDIT: Desolate Dunes perhaps?
