Claimed by:
Briefing: The proposed boss for this level is the Mecha-Tree.
Proposed Design:
by xlk

WIP Tileset:

Proposed Attack:
Attack 1 appears to be electrified lines dropping from the trees branches. During this attack phase Mario just needs to dodge the lines.
Attack 2 the tree appears to use an arm to toss random enemies at Mario. I can see this being a cross of tossing spiny enemies and well as a goomba or koopa in the batch that Mario can jump on and toss back at the trees face for some damage.
Not Quite sure what the third attack is suppose to be, but as a suggestion; on the trees last hit, it sprouts and mechanized goomba that will randomly fire a laser across the battle floor towards Mario that he must also dodge along with the first 2 attacks.

I for one eagerly await to see if this Mecha-Tree tries to scan/analyze Mario and attempt to kill him because Mario was accused of being a lumberjack. On a serious note, I'm getting a Wispy (sp) Woods vibe from what it would plausibly do. Unless you actually WANT to make it burrow into the ground.

What would be really cool would be if it were like whispy woods in Kirby 64 (In the "You're walking around it" kind of way, not the "you gotta shoot the mini trees" kind of way). That would actually not be that difficult, just an infinite looping foreground with a background that scrolls in the wrong direction, with tree as a sprite that will change it's appearance based on your angle compared to it. Not sure what you would use to hit it though.

Maybe if you could somehow implement a throwing system like in Yoshi's Island's final battle. Well, carol's managed to do it. If that was possible, I'd be pretty excited.

You should so have an axe for this battle.

Not bad idea. I really like hitting trees with axe.
Edit: LVL UP! Fly me... To the moon...

I'm pretty sure everybody else will agree that that'd feel very, very arbitrary.

I found this idea for the Mecha Tree. Lucas came up with it months ago.
Mod edit: Fixed link.

I think that you should require a fire flower to hurt him.
Sort of like Squizzard from Super Mario Galaxy 2. That would be interesting.

Don't forget the part where the eye rips out of the tree in a surprisingly disturbing and gory fashion to chase Mario, only to be destroyed and later resurrected in a plot twist as the true final boss of the sequel that becomes famous for it's awesome boss theme and insane lack of difficulty.
No, I'm *not* referencing anything...

If by “anything” you mean Kirby's Dreamland 3 and Kirby 64...

Oh... so it was zero 2, not O 2....
Any way, to hurt it, how about the tree having some random spot where the bark is worndown/inexistant, and it being necesarry to attack said spot. How, with fire(balls), and there could be "flower patches" where fireflowers will randomly spawn.
Another alternative is burning of bark, revealing the mechanical inside, wich can be overheated/jumped on/thrown something/pull stuff out of it with yoshi>_>

Edited the first post with the design idea. We are still looking for someone to work on the gfx for this and code the boss itself. We may not be completely done with the levels yet, but it would be nice to get a jump start on some of these bosses.

*Looks at the first post*
So are we using Lucas' idea?

Its seems to be the popular idea here, so probably yes. Unless someone has a better idea, speak now or forever hold your peace.

I totally like Lucas' idea. *Sees the 'Truntec' word on the picture* Wait, 'Truntec' is the name for the Mecha-Tree.

I also think that Lucas's idea seems to be the best. I don't see any point in deliberating any longer on this.

About the gfx of said boss, what would be the proportions/size/palettes used by it?
