This organization kind of worries me if they're willing to go this far about a Mario game. PETA is stating that it's wrong for Mario to wear the Tanooki suit, because the Tanuki us a real animal (a raccoon dog). This is going way too far, just because Mario wears a suit that resembles a Tanuki doesn't mean the company has to have a fit and claim that Mario likes to murder and skin Raccoon dogs, and PETA wonders why people don't take them seriously..

If you take a look at their homepage you can see that they're displaying this protest to everyone and they even made a game where the Tanooki reclaims his fur.

I know this is probably some sort of a joke but the basis behind it is kind of absurd.

Just.. just come on.

There's a thread about that here already, actually.
It's a little bit more sarcastic, but hey that's basically all PETA deserves.
You know, their insane extremism may be good for us. Generally, the more extreme a given group is, the less people listen to them.
Yeah, I appologize, I don't really check the World of Insanity :P.

Exactly, they're going extreme to the point where they can't be taken seriously at all. It's even funny how ridiculous it is.
It's funny cause Mario got this power up 20 years back. They are a little late about this. Also he has being many other animals. :P
This is WAY too late, because Mario has killed a frog and a tanooki 20 years ago as well. Owait, what did the frog do?

But either how, their protest is absurd...
Maybe someone should go over to PETA and give them a good smack across the back of the head and explain the difference between a Cartoon and Real Life. If they're so offended by this, and the fly Obama killed, they would go absolutely insane if someone showed them Happy Tree Friends. Wouldn't that be a good laugh?
Seriously it angers me how stupid they are lol... It is fictional, it isn't like Mario is out killing real animals, and 99.9999999% of the time (maybe someone has done this, that is why I didn't put 100%) a kid isn't going to be like "oh hey, Mario is killing stuff, so should I! Where's the hammer? dur hur hur"... I couldn't take them seriously before, but now... Oh man hahaha.

EDIT:

@Post before this: They really need to see the episode of South Park when Stan joins PETA hahahaha, P-Diddy walks in oh man haha.

Sadly, this is probably what PETA thinks kids do.
Also that gave me a good laugh. XD
Turns out it was all a joke.

...then why am I not laughing?
'Oh crap people are hating our organization!'
'Uh Uhhh, tell them it was a joke! Yeah that'll do.'
'Good idea! It was all a joke! Heh heh.'
'Yeah it was a joke! We weren't serious about this at all!'
I'm about to throw up from not laughing so hard.

Why would you skin a raccoon dog alive for it's fur? It would squirm so much less if you killed it first...

That being said: I actually did laugh while playing the game. I can't believe people actually took that seriously...

We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur.

You know, if they had just said something similar to this from the start, they could have captured the Nintendo audience's attention and still gotten their point across; observe!

Mario fans: Your favorite video game characters get some help from the mystical Tanookis in SM3DL. But please, allow us to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur. We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur.

See how much better that sounds and how it can still convey a message without alienating people?
@andy: Yeah but they just... are so stupid it doesn't even matter haha.

What probably happened is that Nintendo got pissed off that they made a game mocking SML3D, and they "took action", then PETA is like "oh shit...", so then PETA probably agreed to just say it was all a joke. Still PETA if it was a joke... you guys really suck at being comedians lol.

@andy: But it all seriousness, yeah if they said it like that, WITHOUT making the game, it would be somewhat better. PETA = trolololol
This was so not funny I almost fell off my universe with laughter.

I mean, that "joke" just about mocks themselves (if it even WAS a joke). If it wasn't, then that's just another lol all the same.

also nobody skins those dogs alive >_>

Why would you skin a raccoon dog alive for it's fur?

Guess: So this animal can grow a new furcoat, allowing you to get two (or more, depending on how long they live) pieces of fur from one animal.

Well, I read through the Wikipedia article and I didn't see anything about the raccoon dog's ability to regrow their skin after it's been removed from their body (It's not something most animals tend to be able to do), so I doubt that's the issue. For that to work they would have to just be shaving them, which I doubt even PETA could take up issue with.
Question:...Why did they have to involve Mario? They could have just stated the problem, but nope they had to jump the boat on this one too. Oh well they just created more people who will not listen to them.
Because Mario is popular, and they want as many people as possible to hear their message. Of course, it backfired spectacularly.
