THOSE CUNTS WON'T GIVE UP, WILL THEY?
I predict SOPA will pass. Good-bye, Internet. GOOD-BYE. See-ya.
Up until now, I fully supported the SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/etc protests. But today, my dad gave his opinion on it, and now I honestly feel like doing absolutely nothing, because I have no idea what to think now. Is this a reasonable perspective, or am I being silenced by somebody who doesn't know what he's talking about? I'd prefer that first one, as I don't want to realize I'm being swayed by the natural instinct to trust your friends/family, especially your parents.

Basically, he thinks that people are making too big of a deal, and that some people are only upset because they can't rip people off by getting things for free that they're supposed to pay for. The blackouts "demonstrating what would happen"? That wouldn't happen, because unlike places such as China or Iran who have full control of the press, the federal government is legally bound by the constitution and doesn't have that kind of control, meaning doing something like China would be very difficult. He goes on to say that that's what the Supreme Court is for, is to filter out this kind of crap and keep it from passing. He says the Internet has only been around 20 years, and prior to that the world got along just fine. But he admits that because he's older and knows of a time when you couldn't just Google up any information you wanted, he might be looking at it differently. He enjoys the convenience, but can survive without it. The example he gives is if someone were used to using gas light and candles, and electricity was invented, and then news came out that electricity would be taken away from that area, that person wouldn't be as worked up over it as other people.

A little off-topic: he thinks the NDAA thing is stupid. "Black-booted men aren't gonna come kicking down your door for no reason," he said, or something along those lines. He argues the Patriot Act has been around for like 10 years and hasn't caused much trouble, and that we haven't had another 9/11 and that it probably has something to do with these bills, and that 98% (I think that's what he said, but I'm not sure) of the people suspected as terrorists actually are terrorists, and that it works both ways; criminals can use laws to get away with things; for example, if a policeman finds evidence of a bloody murder in the trunk of someone's car, but has no search warrant, it's ignored, even though everyone knows the guy is guilty, and the killer gets off free.

In short, he thinks I worry about it too much and that I should really search for some opposing views before riling myself up. Before you jump to conclusions, I don't think he supports SOPA/PIPA. He supports the prevention of piracy, but as far as these particular laws go, I don't think he supports nor opposes them. He kinda dun give a crap either way.

Now...now I don't know what to think. I think he has a point about the NDAA, but SOPA/PIPA...so many people protested, signed petitions, called their government representatives, blacked out their sites. It was probably the biggest online protest in history. Only less than a half-quarter supported SOPA/PIPA out of the MILLIONS that wanted it to die. Even Kony 2012 only lasted a few days before everybody figured out it was a fraud (I think the creator of that video being arrested for public masturbation gives a hint...). There's only 2 explanations: they're stupid laws, or they're good laws and everybody is stupid. I'd like to believe that humanity's intelligence as a whole hasn't sunken that low.

I am not sure why I'm bothering to post this, as everyone will probably get fumed up and say my dad's an idiot. I just needed to get this out somewhere, as I don't know what to think or who to trust now...
It isn't as much the intent of these bills as much as the power it gives to corrupt corporations. If such laws were to pass, Kim Dotcom and his fellow nethead Mega-employees would be turned into Rapidmegafire.
When I talked about it later today, he basically admitted when it comes to legislations like these he's ignorant because, to put it into Internet terms, all these laws are tl;dr. And he once again brought up the point that if it's that bad, it ain't gonna work in the end; and also that a lot of people are like "hey, if this passes we won't get to see these free videos on YouTube" and jump on the bandwagon without knowing much about it.
I'm honestly on a stance of, "Just let it pass, let congress see how much of a stupid idea that was, and then pretend like this whole SOPA/PIPA stuff never happened." at the moment. I'm honestly tired of all this protesting and arguing. We all have enough ROMs and such to last us a week without downloading new ones, we'll last. Let's take this like an internet cleansing or whatever. Sort of like when the Bible's God, Yahweh flooded the world and afterwards realized that doesn't really work when it comes to fixing problems and never did it again. Only, the internet not having copyrighted material isn't going to kill absolutely everything minus two of every species on Earth.
Except the Supreme Court, if they have any sense, would probably rule it unconstitutional anyways. Except I don't know if I'm to even trust that it's as bad as it's made out to be. Except I'm not trusting anyone at the moment. Except the entire Internet is lying to me. Except the entire IRL is lying to me. Except I'm being driven insane by paranoia. Except the nice men in white coats just showed up to take me to Loony Land. Except they're forcing me off the computer and I can't type anymo
Oh look, they're trying again.

There's so many things that will never let anything like this work. At least in the United States. The constitution, the lack of a totalitarian rule that has complete control of the press (China, Iran, Soviet Union), and of course all the protests.

Give up.
Also don't forget ACTA, it's not dead yet.

So since we reacted so badly to content being censored for our safety, they're trying to quietly monitor us for our safety. I don't really know which I'd rather. I guess before any of the current stuff passes I should download all the roms and anime I need for the next few years.

I have not.
I should probably stop making Let's Play videos and call it quits. The US government probably won't want me to download anything illegaly for free.
That's the spirit.

Just give up when things look bad.

(i'm being sarcastic)
First SOPA & PIPA, then ACTA and now CISPA? When will the Government just fuck off with this shit?! #w{>=(}

When Lemuria, Dinotopia and Gensokyo are discovered, or when sapient extraterrestrial life is, whichever comes 1.5th.
I signed the petition. I hope the signatures are strong enough to change the bill-supporters' minds.
Damn i feel so useless, since i live in Mexico i can't do anything other than watch

They're expected to vote on CISPA today, but I had gotten an e-mail about pledging to call the lawmakers before the vote.
If this bill passes, then all I will have to say is that the tool on our computers will be gone forever and we can't retrieve it.

Why would one bill that makes absolutely no sense at all come into law where it would not let Americans use the information we need. How do we pay bills online? How do we connect to friends and family members you haven't seen in years? How do we get news and information from the Internet? I'm just praying for this bill to be rejected right now.
