Only in Saudi-Arabia.
Just what the fuck are they thinking? 500 lashes and a year (it was lowered) in jail. I think you can get rid of the jail sentence already, because basically this is nothing less than a death sentence.
Why do these regimes still exist?

Going to throw my two cents into the situation before conclusions are made. Consider the events that happened this past year, you know about how many middle eastern countries rebelled against the government for the government being corrupt and inhumane, despite their attempts to make themselves look like their practicing Islam.
My point being that this isn't an issue stemming from religion, it's an issue with a government that is terrible and ignorant. Tis a shame the government can't represent what Islam is, or peace in any matter.

Islam is such a beautiful religion when you get down to it, sure it has alot of gruesome things in it, but pretty much every religion does, and it really isn't that much of an "evil" religion, but then again, no religion really is at heart. But over the years it has been twisted by the hands of man. No religion teaches hate, death, or torture; but people do, and that's a sad thing. I love religion for the morality and teachings it brought upon humanity, but its outlived its welcome, and like drugs, too much of it, and your mind becomes mush. This is the 21st century for crying out loud, I'm tired of all this religion crap, and people are so blindly ignorant as to just shove it off to the side like it was nothing. Really, what did that Aussie say that could offend the government so much that they had to throw him in jail and give him 500 lashes? Jail is punishment enough.

Has anyone ever survived 500 lashes? I believe 200 is the world record.

Religion is just wonderful, is it not? It's just awesome that it's just become an excuse to be a hateful asshole.

Why can't we criticize the gruesome aspects of a religion though? If we accept that there is something inherently wrong with misogynistic, hateful, and backwards beliefs, and believing in something without evidence, then why do we accept them when it's presented in the form of religion? That we gravitate more towards the positive and tolerant parts of a religion is not a testament to some inner goodness that we've been missing for hundreds of years, but to the self-contradiction so commonly found in religious texts and to the evolution of our societal morality. Blasphemy is an invention in order to preserve these beliefs in the face of critical thought, and it actually disgusts me that you would suggest jail would be any better, as if punishment was deserved at all for speaking one's mind.

I apologize, I meant to say torture, not punishment. I sort of meant it like in the Count of Monte Cristo, when Dantes is sent to jail for something he didn't do, that's bad enough, but then they throw him into the dungeon, that's even worse. Neither of these two deserve to be thrown in Jail, but to go further than that is even more wrong. It was improper wording on my part, I apologize.
Anyway, you can ask everyone I know, and they'll tell you I love to criticize religion. I love to find everything negative about religion, and just use that as a counter argument against religious people. What I was trying to say, is that religions, at heart, don't want evil in the world. But the teachings are old now, morals have changed, people are being more and more connected, so those morals today are incompatible. I am one of those people who will constantly nag Christians about their beliefs, presenting a new argument trying to change their mind. Quite frankly, I hate religion. But it's not really religion's fault, it's the people. I don't know how many of you know what it's like when a close friend of yours tells you that you're going to die and suffer for all of eternity, while he's going to kiss the ass of the creator of the universe for all eternity. Not only is it ridiculously idiotic, but it also hurts from the bad intention the message was supposed to have. I hate everything religion's done to this world, be it the halting of scientific progress, blind faith that there's someone out there who loves you and guides you through life, etcetera. It's all bullshit to control people, and it works. Not for long, now that we have the magical anti-bullshit machine known as the internet. It's a pretty cool thing, how you can't lie anymore, otherwise you'll be found out. It's only a matter of time, I just hope I live long enough to see it happen. I know I won't, but I'd still like to see a world where no one is religious. My wording in the previous post was complete garbage, I regret not taking my time. If you were offended by my post, then be offended, I'm not trying to offend, I'm trying to share my beliefs, unless you can put up a good reason why my belief is wrong, I don't care if you disagree with them or not. I respect other people's beliefs, but it depends on what their belief is. If someone tells me they believe in a god, good for them, there's a possibility. The bible god? No, not so much. If you believe there was no beginning and the universe always was? Hop on the train, I saved you a seat. Just don't believe in anything irrational, like a Flying Pink Unicorn.
