Hi guys!

I'm a mac user. I have been for my entire life. In the past I've tried to run everything I need for parallels or wine and to tell the truth, keeping my computer organized this way is really frustrating. That's why this time around, I'm contemplating getting a VERY basic PC mainly for SMW editing, maybe I'll try to run fruity loops on it (I'm a musician). I really would love to keep the costs for this under 100$ (reasonable I think?)

I really am out of touch with PC prices, because my friend who has a PC always buys computers that are VERY out of date. And as a filmmaker and musician I'm used to putting HUGE investments into my computers. but I think that having a clean space that's primarily for this sorta stuff'll help me focus on it in a way that I haven't been able to before and want to.

Is there anything you can think of that would require some sort of minimum specifications? What should I look out for when buying PC parts? I'm a total PC n00b here guys!

thanks a bunch!
You're going to want at least a 1.6GHz CPU (I can barely live with my shitty 1.7 Pentium on my laptop), at least 1GB of RAM (though get 2GB if you can), and for it to be able to run well, probably Windows XP, and for something cheap, you're not likely to get a dedicated graphics chipset.

Also, I love you for doing whatever you can to still use a Mac.

If he's doing video editing, he will need much more RAM, and highly recommended 64-bit system which can greatly increase speeds of render times and such. I don't know too much about video editing system requirements, but you can get a good idea by looking at Sony Vegas' requirements (even if you don't plan on using it).
NismoZ: Thanks a bunch! I've just really gotten sick of half assely telling myself I'm gonna make a rom hack and then getting dissuaded because It's a f**n mess to do through parallels.

Ultimaximus: I'm still going to use my mac for video editing n such. I've just told myself that I want to actually dedicate a decent amount of energy to rom stuff and thought I'd get a super barebones PC just for that sorta thing.

Both of you thanxxx!
If all you need a bare-metal PC for ROM hacking, why not emulate a PC? VirtualBox and friends can create a virtual machine that you can run Windows or Linux or something else in; this is more than fine for ROM hacking.
I used to do that but truth be told at this point I'd rather just see how many free parts I can harvest from my friends and build something

A) cuz it's fun to make things

B) cuz I've never built a PC before

and C) cuz I'm anal retentive and can't stand having all those stupid PC files sitting around taking up hard drive space on my mac. Especially now that I'v FINALLY gotten it organized. :P

Also, if you choose to have a virtual machine with Windows on it, there won't be any file clutter on your hard disk, as everything will be kept together in a hard disk image (a single file).

Also, if you're going to do ANY sort of music on it (you mentioned FL Studio), you won't get anywhere with just $100... unless, of course, you have a proper external soundcard for your Mac that also works with Windows. Still, though. Without a proper CPU, you'll most likely be dealing with a lot of crackles and high latency.

If you're just using it for hacking, though, any old piece of hardware should do the trick.

Curses, I was beaten to it!

Anyway, couldn't you just dual boot Windows and OS X?
