How do you really care about overworlds?

I generally care a lot about overworlds. I make overworlds after making levels, to test levels. I usually don't like when I can't proceed when I specify an level number in an existing level, but I just fix it by selecting an event. Some level tiles can't seem to appear for me, so, I just replace them with already appeared level tiles (this include the shining ones). Sometimes my overworlds are bad because I'm lazy, and I try to find a way to make it better.

Do you care about the overworlds of the hacks you play?

Honestly, I don't care too much about what the overworld looks like in hacks I play, but I still like it when the creator puts in the effort.

That being said, if one of my overworlds doesn't look like one I'd enjoy in another hack, I scrap it and start over. I try to put in a lot of effort. Here's pretty much the only example I have at the moment.
I care OWs tooo much. For me good OWs make the hack more organized, and is more funny to walk arround it. And when I made one... I cant be lazy or I'll make horror things...

Also...

Maybe this isn't the best place to you post it but... Just remade it ¬¬

Aouzy, check out this tutorial, it is quite helpful, it is by Teo. Also I just remade one of my old OW's, shows how picky I am haha.
I could care less what the darned overworld looks like. The whole purpose of the overworld is to get the player from one level to another. Honestly, I would almost prefer that there were a level select in hacks so I don't have to traverse a long path just to replay some level miles away because I missed a secret exit. It takes no skill to get from one level to another on the overworld.

Perspective errors? Really? It's a freaking video game. There are already hundreds of abstract concepts in SMW and people single out perspective errors? It sickens me. I also don't care about floating munchers (or floating anything for that matter), so my opinion on this could be void.

However, if an overworld is cleverly designed and it truly represents the type of level I'm about to play, then the overworld can be quite pleasing.

Ok thanks, i'm working im a new overworld right now (And a new hack) I just discovered that i can take tiles from the overworld instead of selecting them from the 8X8 menu. That thread helped btw.
I think my OW talks about my opinion of how overworlds show be like (WIP)

Rect paths, linear and tiny gaps between levels.

"Traditional SMW" style also works, but i rather prefer my style, as someone said, if you aren't going to add multiple paths to your level progression, curved or more complex path shapes aren't necesary, you can decorate a lot your OW, but ain't a important feature as the levels.
I love overworlds. Always have. Until relatively recently, I wasn't too picky about how they looked, and in the past it wasn't frowned upon as much to have simple OW design.

But I think they're very important. They help immerse you in the game's world, and thematically tie levels together. When I first played SMW as a 4 year old kid, the sheer size of the world knocked my socks off. The sense of exploration, grandeur, and the anticipation of what lies ahead is what makes a good OW. Besides, I've always liked the graphical style of SMW's OW, especially with subtle enhancements.

EDIT: Ninji'd!
I made a better OW it's a lot better than my old one.

I think Overworlds are important because it gives a sort of atmosphere and it gives me a sense of exploration.

Hmm... Better but not so good. Okay, I'll stop making offs ¬¬

Just for complete what I said: for me an OW can't be empty. Every place do want to be good decoration and with no abuse. Brutal Mario is a good example for me.

I do generic overworlds, but I care about the cutoffs and the design but I plan the OW based in what kind of levels I'll do, thus making easier for me to plan the OW without worry about the levels later.

Usually I don't get too concerned with the looks, but what makes a game really fun is when the overworld is nonlinear (at least in feel, although not necessarily in gameplay).

The prime example of this is MGU2. In that game you go all over the place, you split up with secret paths, etc. And you end up having to go to multiple places to continue. Its a great overworld, far better than many I've seen.

I also liked some of the gimmicks in Super Demo World the Legend Continues but those kind of encourage a lot of savestating (hello, getting stuck in Boo World or Star World!)
I think overworlds are really important, but I don't seem to have the patience to put a lot of detail into my overworlds. They usually do have nice palettes and good terrain but I don't make those really wacky overworlds that go all over the place. I do consider it to be the most important aspect in a romhack.
I think I've said this before but a good overworld can really apply alot of "Polish" to your hack. You can have a good hack, and that good OW will make it look so much better.
As an outsider to this community that only comes here to play quality hacks, I can tell you that if I don't see time put into the overworld I'm likely not playing it beyond the 1st castle. Unless, of course, the level design is outstanding. Even then, I expect some decent originality to replace the absence of a polished custom OW.

I think many who come to download hacks here feel the same.
The Overworld is very important to me. I made a train level in my hack , and drew a train on the Overworld - I made a level with a lot of self drawn towers and drew also a tower for the Overworld. I made a ship level so i drew a ship - and so on. Btw I love it to design a Submap - My submaps are very good but I have still some problems making a big Overworld. But anyways I think that a hack with awesome levels and a crappy overworld isn't as good as a hack with good levels and a perfect overworld. You can also make some cool features on the Overworld. I made an event which destroys a whole mountain and a big hole appears then warping to the last submap.

so all in all I think that the Overworld should be built as well as you can.
sry for bad english.
To me, the overworld isn't as important as the actual level design and aesthetics of the hack. I still try and make decent overworlds though.

As long as the overworld is decent - read: no cutoff/perspective - then I'm indifferent either way. :/
there was a bump :O

I somewhat care about the OW. I like making nice scenery with nice rivers, hills, waterfalls and such. I also like relating the current level's position with the OW, i.e: the level has a river in the BG, I make a river next to the level. There's a sea near to the level, the level will use a seaview BG, etc.

All in all, I really enjoy making good overworlds so I care a lot about them, even when they're just the map to move from level to level.
I really like OWs actually, can't live with out them XD

And was that a bump Mawwo7 just made?
