With 2011 came a huge selection of great new videogames. What were your absolute highlights released this year?
I've got quite a big list, but I'll post the more notable titles:
- Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
- Zelda: Skyward Sword
- Kirby's Adventure Wii
- Minna no Rhythm Tengoku
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- Duke Nukem Forever

I guess I'll just name my GOTYs per platform
DS - Although the DS is coming to an end, there's still a few games that came out this year that were great. Like Pokemon, Layton, Kirby, Okamiden, but I think Ghost Trick is the one I personally liked most, with real smooth animations, nice music, awesome story and memorable characters.
Wii - Skyward Sword. Although I'm sure a lot of people didn't like the motion controls, it's still one of the best Wii games out there. Besides, is there really any other Wii game that came out in 2011 that's worth getting?
3DS - Mario Kart 7, the most fun I've had with my 3DS yet. I guess it's only worth it if you have friends to play with, online or not. also dat 60FPS in 3D.
PS3 - I didn't really get a ps3 exclusive last year. I've been ignoring my ps3 recently. The only game I got for ps3 that I came out this year was portal 2. So yeah, Portal 2.
PC - Portal 2. Other than that, I played minecraft a lot. Although after final release it felt kinda dull.

Judging by hours played, I guess Terraria and Skyrim. Possibly the 3DS Ocarina of Time re-release. Portal 2 definitely also deserves a mention.
I have yet to play Kirby's Adventure Wii, but I hear it's great. I wish I could add Skyward Sword to the list, but I really didn't find it that great. Granted, I have yet to complete it, but I've already played through the first temple, and it didn't really do anything for me.

Video game highlights? Here's my list:
It's obviously not very long.
(to be fair I have played some decent games that came out this year, but nothing has remotely come close to blowing me away)

I heard it's supposed to get great around the third temple, which is kinda stupid considering how long this game takes from what I'm seeing. I've gotten up to the entrance to the Earth Temple, but I haven't had the incentive to go back to it, seeing as how the bomb mechanics aren't really cooperating with me. Well, frankly, the only somewhat fun thing to use so far for me is the sword. :/
Anyways, Minecraft and Super Mario 3D Land. Wish I could say Sonic Generations, but it has it's... Irritating... Points.

I honestly can't give a shit how good the game gets 10 hours of gameplay in. It should have caught me after half an hour, at most. That, and I hate the motion controls. They are almost as terrible as they were with Wii Sports back when the Wii was just released. It's a real shame, too, since I'm generally such a fan of the Zelda franchise.
Anyway, enough hating on that. Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land are waiting for me at the post office. We shall see if they are worthy.

Well, I think the controls take some time getting used to. I had some problems with them at first, but after finishing the game and starting it a second time, I found it easier to use the sword.
I can understand how frustrating the game can be at times. I had a lot of problems with it during my first playthrough, but then again, I feel a game is easier after you've beaten it at least once. But I'm playing it a second time right now, and I've had less trouble getting through, even against the first boss.

2011 has been a pretty solid year all round, but my personal favourites this year would have to be:
Sonic Generations - Now my favourite 3d Sonic game.
Rayman Origins - Beautiful to look at and beautiful to play. It's Rayman how I remember him.
Skyrim - Where did those 45 hours go?
Those are the three that stand out to me, but I haven't played Portal 2 or Driver San Francisco yet and they both look good enough to make it to my top games.

Haven't played Generations yet, but Skyrim, Skyward Sword, and Kirby's Return to Dreamland (I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that one yet..?) are certainly there.
Like many others have said, Skyward Sword doesn't pick up for so long it's a pain in the ass, but it gets great when you put the hours in (which, sadly, some people don't really have). I don't actually HAVE Skyrim but play it all the time at a friend of mine's house.
If you guys haven't yet picked up KRTD, please do so. It totally rocks.

I got some 3DS stuff:
-Sonic Generations. There could have been more levels and a Super Sonic ability but it was nice with the 3D especially on Mushroom Hill. The mission mode and extras keep me busy.
-Super Mario 3D land. Wow. The 3D messed with my mind in the small rooms where it's supposed to. The level design is the same like any 3D mario game. The power ups were fun to mess with and the boomerang is the second best. 30 second levels are hard.
-Mario Kart 7. The retro levels had almost all my favorites. The Dino level was like . Metal Mario felt like a waste to me. He's just a really clean and heavy Mario clone (*Cough*melee dr.Mario). The newer levels are much more of a challenge than the Wii in my opinion. The graphic were amazing and The gliders are pretty cool.

>Pokemon Black
Pretty fun installment in one of my favorite series, too bad I got bored of it after a month.
>Rayman Origins
Amazing platformer with Nintendo hard levels and an amazing art style to boot, probably one of my favorites in a long time.
>Dark Souls
Great action rpg with plenty of content, one of the downsides is the abysmal frame rates (I'm looking at you Blighttown)
>Batman Arkham City
Somewhere between gliding around dive bombing thugs and beating down a shark on a wooden raft I realized I am the god damn Batman. Hands down my personal goty.

My highlights with the 2011 releases of video games are:
- I got the 3DS and Super Mario 3D Land.
- I played MW3 on XBox360 with my close friend.
- I learned from a video game expert at a GameStop that Mario Kart 7 is the hardest Mario Kart game in the 20-year franchise, so I decided to ignore the game.

Not like last year though. Honestly, DKCR last year made my year for gaming lol.

Word. It just seemed... there wasn't as much to do as other Pokemon games, but I still play SoulSilver, damn that is a good DS Pokemon game, usually I do not like playing DS games much, but SoulSilver makes me love the DS.

- Portal 2
An all-around excellent game with interesting mechanics and great writing.
- Minecraft
It's the only other game I have that was released in 2011, so...

Skyrim and Kirby's Return to Dreamland were the two biggest ones for me this year. Come to think of it, I don't even remember buying any games in the first half of 2011 at all.
