The real protagonist in Ocarina of Time.

also Mario 3 was my favourite.
I think it would be fair to put up the criteria that Mario should at least be a playable character.

Also, not sure. I guess Super Mario World is the one I played the most, but Yoshi's Island is also really awesome.
I would give that title to "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island"
As I'd loved playing it has a child and still do today.

Agreed
For some reason when i was smaller i thought the fact that bowser was so evil to kill/kidnapped a baby was very saddening for me but after 2 years after i stopped playing the game i realized that it was stupid to think like that but i guess the humane side of me came out.
YI ROCKS!!

The first game I ever really played extensively was SMW, but now that I think about it I don't really enjoy the game as much as I used to. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Super Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG, and SMB:TLL, so maybe one of those three.

Unless I'm allowed to count Super Mario Land 3.
If Mario All Stars+World counts, then that definitely.

If not then Yoshi's Island.
I honestly love pretty much every mario game and they all hold some sort of nostalgic value. I tend to like the RPGs more than the platformers, but Yoshi's island is just... massive, I guess.

What about Luigi's Mansion?
Well, out of all the Mario games ever, I really can't decide, so I'll pick by genre.

For 2D platformers, I'd guess SMB3 (SMA4). I max'd the score on it.

For 3D platformers, Super Mario Galaxy 2. I got all 242 stars twice.

For RPGs, The Thousand-year door for sure. Best childhood RPG ever.

For the the Kart games, Mario Kart 7. I probably wont get tired of this game soon. As long as there's people out there willing to play online.
Yoshi's Island by far! The art style and advanced GFX techniques are some of the most impressive found on a SNES game. The levels in terms of layout and design are all full of unique ideas that each level stands apart from the rest. The bosses? THE BOSSES are just so well planned out and fun! The music is so catchy I find myself humming some of the great tunes daily.

I forgot to mention that you are rewarded for finding everything unlike the original SMW (I'm talking about finding all the exits).

*sigh* They just don't make amazing 2D platformers like they used to.
Out of all the games in the core Mario series, I pretty much like all of them, (save maybe the SFC version of SMB2, the All-stars version is alright though.) but judging from previous posts, it can be any "Mario" game, so, I'd have choose Paper Mario, which is not only my favorite Mario game, but it's also one of my favorite games period. If we're only counting platforming Mario games, like I said, I'm not really sure which one I'd pick.
You people do know that Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is in a different series, like Paper Mario, right?

But who cares; the game is awesome enough!

~

Anywho:

Arcade Series:
Mario Bros. (Who doesn't love that Phase Starting Up music?; Advance)
Donkey Kong

Super Mario Bros. Series:
Super Mario World (Advance...I grew up with the Gameboy SP and the Super FamiCom/SNES)
Super Mario Bros. 2 USA (Advance)
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3 (Advance)
New Super Mario Bros.

Paper Mario Series:
Haven't played any.

Yoshi Series:
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Super Mario Land Series:
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (We need more SML2 sprites)
Super Mario Land (IT WAS TOO SHORT! And no save prompt...)

Mario & Luigi Series:
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (this game was short-lived for me, sicne I only downloaded a ROM, and we had to get our computer fixed...; WHERE THE HECK CAN I FIND THIS GAME?)

~

Wario Land Series:
Wario Land 4 (The only Wario Land I played)

Donkey Kong Country:
Donkey Kong Country (for the GB Advance...I quit on the second level; I didn't feel the game that much)

ALL IN ALL of the Mario Games....
NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Super Mario World on the SNES...HANDS DOWN!
Yoshi's Island. The very first Mario game i ever played. Loved it since the beginning.
Ok. Now how did I RANDOMLY get a THOUSAND views on this topic that I just made when I was bored. Awesome though. Back on topic...
PAPER MARIO. Amazing story and soundtrack, And I have tons of good memories of it. But it's kinda weird, The first and last time I played it was like a year ago.
The only downside for me, is that the game has no replay value IMO. Maybe because It's one of the Only RPGs I like...
I'd say Super Mario World & Mario Party 1 & 2
SMW I grew up with as a kid, and I have tons of great memories of playing Mario Party together with my older cousins.
(The greatest gaming moment of my life when I first beat both my older cousins and brother. HA!)

Super Mario All Stars, so many childhood memories.

Super Mario 64 is a close second.

Cheater.
I say Super Mario World is my all time favorite Mario game. I've beaten the game at least a dozen times over the years and it still hasn't gotten old.

I've practically memorized every single level, too. I manage to freak out my friend when I describe an entire playthrough to him straight from my head. :U
