Luckily there are still Rapidshare and Mediafire left, but for how long?

This makes me pretty sad. It sets a bad precedent, too. I mean, we all know that Megaupload hosted illegal content, but it also hosted a lot of legitimate content. They had a means by which illegal content could be reported. What else was required of them to be a legal operation? If other similar sites also get shut down, how can any file hosting exist?
Here's another good story on the case and shutdown.

WHY ;_;
Megaupload was a really good filesharing website. And now it's gone, and all the megaupload links are dead, which is very sad when some things are only uploaded on megaupload and you can't find them anywhere else.
First SOPA, and now this. The end of the internet is near. Now I start to think that the world will really end in 2012.

The world would not end if the internet ends. Sure there'll be riots, but it's not like Earth would implode or something if that happens. SOPA's unlikely to pass, in my humble opinion, and hopefully this whole Megaupload thing is settled.
However, I find it a bit odd that Megaupload was taken down before something like ThePirateBay. You'd think they would go after the sites that focus on this kind of stuff all the time as opposed to a site that does it occasionally.

This is stupid, FBI. I have nothing against you, FBI, but you're making fans angry.

The reason I rarely post here is because some stories like this just make me want to post foul, sewer language about the antagonist (the FBI in this case) and anything short of that is just too soft. If they can do this without SOPA and PIPA in effect, why consider SOPA and PIPA at all? Because the government actually supports piracy and wants to go after copyright infringement that isn't as bad, and they lie about wanting to stop piracy because it's an excuse. They love drinking the sweet honey taste of our tears.
The MPAA would sell their souls to the devil for a gold coin.

Awww... They shut it down! Well that's just GREAT! What's next they'll shut down? GOOGLE?
Something tells me that if this law passes, world war 3 will start (jk). That, or lots of protests and me boycotting movies.

Interesting.
That only makes people who want to download content angry as hell, but I have nothing to do with it.

ThePirateBay isn't hosted in the US, so they can't take it down.

Can it ever be reinstated, or were the servers destroyed?

Did it say where Megaupload was hosted? The OP's link didn't make it clear since it listed the involvement of several countries.

True, but with PIPA they can block such sites from the US.

*slow clap* Congratulations, anonymous, SOPA and PIPA are as good as passed now. I hope you're proud of yourselves.
EDIT: Okay, no, this doesn't guarantee that the bills will pass, but it sure as hell doesn't help anything.

You can visit it by typing the IP address into the URL box, which is blah.
p4 edit: Removed link under reasonable suspicion of a phishing site.

Are you sure that site is safe? It looks pretty dodgy to me.

The Escapist linked the IP address, so it should be fine.

I never thought it would come to this. A major file-sharing website getting shut down in the midst of all this SOPA and PIPA hype... This is serious.
Needless to say, count me amongst the worried now. Let's just hope other file-sharing sites like Mediafire don't suffer the same fate...
