Well thats quite a F**king Shame; I'm quite disappointed at how this game ended up.
How can riding a car be fun? No separated routes or turns; No 50-Turn games, Coins and More Bowser Spaces??
Whats a Mario Game without COINS??
So yeah; I've lived my Childhood with the old Mario Partys & there still good.
Frankly, I wouldn't even call this a game, This suits better off in the Wiiware section collecting Dust.
Another addition on my "Worst Mario Game List" along with Hotel Mario & MP8

Mario Party 8 wasn't that bad, but this has fallen to Faces of Evil standard. It's pretty much Wand of Gamelon with better controls and fewer glitches.

Keep hope alive, guys. The game isn't automatically bad with no classic mode. Change is good, for the most part. Look at the Resident Evil series. There is a huge change from 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and from 5 to the upcoming new game. Only difference is Resident Evil is a hell lot more successful than any Mario Party game. This game could still be a lot more fun (id imagine only with 4 human players though) than the rest. I heard they're putting a lot more care and attention to mini-games now, so we don't get the same pathetic garbage Mario Party 5 - 8 spewed out. Graphics look nice, info seems good. Sure some things suck like no classic mode, less playable characters and probably no items, but this may be the change we've all been looking for. Lets be honest Mario Party got stale after 5. This may be the change that'll spark Mario Party back up. But, if this game gets less than a 70 like EVERY other Mario Party game has I'm probably just gonna try to pirate it. But like I said, keep hope alive.

A-fricking-mazing.
Is the fanbase so... bitchy that the slightest change can somehow ruin the entire game for you?
"OMG MARIO PARTY IN A CAR THIS GAME IS GONNA SUCK"
Despite the fact that we have absolultely NO IDEA HOW IT WORKS.

Who cares about classic mode anyway? The fun is in the mini-games.

This is every franchise fanbase ever. Just ignore it.

Well to their defense, it can be perhaps too big of a change. Change is good, but sometimes can be too much. This CAN be successful and actually get good ratings opposed to the rest of the series, or it can be the next biggest failure next to Mario's Time Machine. I'm keeping my head up high.
[Edit] Also, lots of info and updates here.

"No Online"
Still, 86% is way better than MP8 did. I'm liking the fact that the dice is a traditional 6 sided one.

That Luigi's Mansion game looks so fun.

Gotta say this beat MP8 greatly. It seems to take a lot more of Mario's history and shove it into a party game. (like how the intro seen is a lot like NSMBW)
But yeah, I might save up for this one

Well guys, I played it. Let me tell you, this game is awesome! Graphics are awesome, mini-games are REALLY fun, the whole moving together thing makes the game more fun actually. I only tried solo mode so far and even though you don't play mini-games every turn there still is tons of mini-game spots. I sometimes played more than 1 mini-game in one turn. I love having to not worry about buying stars anymore and just collecting mini stars to win in the end. Boss battles COULD be a bit more challenging, but I guess it was the first level so I can't complain. I feel like the first level went by so fast that I'm afraid the whole game will go by fast. But that's only because I was enjoying it so much. And this was just by myself with bots. Imagine with 3 friends how fun it'll be. Which is another thing I wanna bring up is that story mode is actually FUN. Unlike just MP8 which was the most tedious thing known to man, this is actually amusing. I'm telling you now man this game is amazing. Don't let anyone who complains about the car or characters or anything let it change your mind, because this game is awesome. Go to your closest store and pick this up, you won't be disappointed. Or just go to demonoid and torrent it. Find some way to play it, especially if you're a fan of the series.

Wow, really? I played it last night with Mue, my sister and cousin and we had a game on the magma board. Firstly, it sucked that you can no longer choose how many turns a board goes for. I don't want a game lasting for a set 30-60 minutes, that's just way too fast. Secondly, it didn't feel like Mario Party anymore because of the lack of bloody minigames. I mean, after the first turn we were all excited to play one, and suddenly it was back to the captain's turn. I think we played, what, a total of 5 mini games in the span of an hour? Mario Party 9 leans more towards being a gimmicky board game (Captain's Game? Seriously?) than a balance of board game elements and mini games to keep things fresh. Boss levels were severely disappointing and basically required no cooperation, so it was basically a mini game with an oversized, common Mario enemy.
I was really hopeful that when Nintendo said that the whole streamlining of Mario Party 9 made it a lot more enjoyable, but this game felt so boring throughout everything. I know a game shouldn't always be a carbon copy of its predecessors but Nintendo is basically selling us a game which has the sole appeal of being the 9th in a series of consistent, familiar gameplay. When you take away things like chance times, turn-by-turn minigames, and even ITEMS, you're just making the game worse than it is good.

Something tells me that you haven't played the game, I just don't know why...
I suspect it's because you're mostly crying that there isn't enough minigames to keep you distracted instead of pointing out other things in the game. Not to mention you only played one level and judge the whole game off that.
And this line also disturbed me:
"Boss levels were severely disappointing and basically required no cooperation"
Yeah, um, you're fighting to get more stars than the other player. Why would you work together?
"When you take away things like chance times, turn-by-turn minigames, and even ITEMS, you're just making the game worse than it is good."
I love how all of those aren't needed and the former's been removed from Mario Party since around 6 or 7. Let me guess, the only Mario Party game you ever played was 1 & 2? Mario Party 9 is like Duel Game. Minigames won't activate until you hit a space (and in Mario Party 9's case, in some Dice Block presents), and it won't end by turns, but by reaching an objective. So yeah, Mario Party can work WITHOUT Turn-by-Turn Minigames. The hate towards this game is petty and sad...

Didn't I just say I played the game at my cousin's house?

Yes, I am "crying" because there aren't enough minigames to keep me distracted. The foundation of the Mario Party games was the abundance of mini games which kept things fresh and this game leans so much towards being a board game that it doesn't even feel like a proper Mario Party.
QuoteYeah, um, you're fighting to get more stars than the other player. Why would you work together?
Because boss battles were said to be a cooperative effort in which you, at the same time, fight for stars. It wasn't a cooperative effort, you turn a lever with chance and hope you win or flip a bloody Wiggler. I was just disappointed as I expected more of a boss battle, you see, not just an ordinary minigame with a huge variant of a common Mario enemy.
QuoteI love how all of those aren't needed and the former's been removed from Mario Party since around 6 or 7.
Mario Party 8 had candy, a variant of the traditional items. They had bats, springs, chomps ... a lot better than just a 0-1 dice or 4-5-6. Removed since 6 and 7, huh?
QuoteLet me guess, the only Mario Party game you ever played was 1 & 2?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8. 6 is the only one I haven't gotten into.
Gosh your arguments are flawless.
QuoteMario Party 9 is like Duel Game.
Which is what sucks about the game, it's no longer mainly about 4 players trying to beat each other in an arsenal of mini games! It's about trying to reach the final boss while avoiding obstacles along the way with a few captain minigames, 1v1s and about 4 free for alls along the way. How the hell am I supposed to have fun when half the time I'm just watching other people play the game as I wait my turn or watch them battle each other?

Forgive me for hating on a game you don't like.
No Mario Party has ever failed to get me hooked and force me to play every single stage with my friends because it was just that fun. We played one board and would rather watch a movie released 10 years ago (which we did!). I'm disappointed and no matter how many times you dissect my post and criticise my arguments I'm never going to like the game.

Real nice post you got there bad luck man. Honestly though, I still love it. I don't care, today was the 2nd day in a row I played with my 3 cousins all day. We had tons of fun. I don't care if there aren't any items, items wouldn't even go good with the new board formula. Using the special dice blocks strategically was just as good. We played tons of mini-games. I mean, you find a whole bunch on item spaces and there are tons of mini-game spaces all around the board. I don't care if the boards are linear. To me, playing 1 map from point A to point B is the same shit as playing any board from MP 4 - 8 for a set number of turns, just running around the same places over and over again. Its the same honestly, either just go from point A to point B over and over again with the chance of making things different with events and captain events, or just play the same maps in the other games over and over again. Mini-games are phenomenal in 9. Most fun I've ever had in a MP game. Unlike the shit the rest of the games spewed out, like all the chores from MP6 (dusting a room, mowing a lawn, cleaning windows, seriously?) Or the short thoughtless crap MP 8 spewed out, these games actually have fun objectives, good use of the wii controls, and pleasing graphics and some nice tunes. And I dunno why you're complaining about the bosses, they do require cooperation. They require all 4 players to focus their attention onto 1 big baddie. I mean, the whole game is new, and a refreshing change. Of course if you focus your attention on only the bad things, you'll hate it. That's how everything is. Quit looking for just the bad things and look at the good things, because the game has tons to deliver. If you really don't like it and refuse to give it a proper shot, go back to the previous MP games.

It's not out yet here, but from what I heard it sounds like a spinoff. It'd be fine if it was the second or third game, but it really should've dropped the nine

Isn't that the same thing they have been doing the past 8 games?

post of the year right here
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed solo mode when I played through, and then played party mode with my family. It was extremely enjoyable for me, and I honestly think this is the best Mario Party game i've played since 2.
I enjoyed the minigames, the car gimmick, the mini stars, the courses, and even the characters. A must have game in my opinion.
