Well, right now my main choice is the iPad 2, but i'm not really sure. I have till febuary to make a decision, and a budget of $500. Any recommendations?

I would recommend staying away from Apple products, but that's a bit of a personal bias.
Anyway, how about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? I've only heard positive things about this tablet. Here are the specs. It runs around $400, which is in your budget.

The correct answer is, of course, not to get a tablet at all. I personally have no clue what to use them for. They are not particularly more impractical than laptops, but they are severely limited by comparison.
If you insist, wait until Windows 8 tablets hit the market. Unlike the tablets currently available, those will actually have a useful operating system underneath the tablet GUI, meaning you can also use them as regular Windows computers.

They're best for consuming content; not creation, Leave programming, word processing, and hacking to the desktop or laptop; a tablet is good for casual gaming, videos, and stuff though.
Also the Windows 8 for tablets will most likely be ARM and limited in some way. No x86 apps...

You may be right. I hear they are making an ARM version of Windows 8 anyway. Eh...
I wonder if they would be powerful enough to emulate x86? :V
Seriously, though, some laptops nowadays have ridiculous battery life. I don't think it would be entirely impossible that some x86 tablets would pop up.

Now Intel's making an Atom that doesn't massacre a phone battery, they're plopping them in phones.
I for one, would not want a x86 phone. It'd make a great hand warmer though.
x86 emulation? Don't count on running W7 on a Snapdragon; maybe XP or Ubuntu.
and most lappies top about 10h for good ones like Asuses or MBPs; a normal one you'd get off the shelf runs 2-6h.

It's a shame x86 is so bloated. I probably wouldn't want an x86 phone either, but that'd mostly be because a phone is too small to do anything useful anyway. Anything larger than that should be a full-fledged (i.e. x86) PC though, if you ask me.

Last time Intel tried to start with a clean slate was Itanic, and that sunk... still floating because businesses seem to keep their stuff for approximately 14 decades.
Anyways, I wouldn't want Windows 8 on a tablet regardless of processor; a desktop is not a tablet, a tablet is not a phone, and a phone is not a desktop.
The Metro and Unity folks don't get that at all...
Also, I think ARM W8 might only run Metro apps, not legacy apps compiled for ARM... So it's just another inevitable failure like MeeGo with no apps for it (I still weep...)

Or you can get the WeTab, which is an open platform on which you can install any OS (but starts with MeeGo installed). For a tablet with a useful OS behind it, it can't be beat, you can use the original OS (which can run Android apps or most standard Linux apps) or you can put on another one, and not just other tablet OSes either, you can install any Linux distro, BSD, or windows 7 (I don't think anyone has spoofed the bios to work with OSx or iOS yet). It's a bummer it hasn't had an update, though, and is still using 2 year old hardware, but it killed the iPad performance wise (even now, besides the fact that the iPad2 has a dual core processor, it's still better). Of course, then US buyers have to pay import tariffs, so there is that...
Disclaimer: I've never used a WeTab, so everything I'm saying is based on technical specifications and abilities, I can't really say anything about how it "feels" or it's durability or anything like that. I just think it's cool.
