I've been working on a hack lately and I've been thinking about posting it on SMWcentral when it's done. Before I do that I need to know if it's not old-school to make vanilla hacks these days. From what I've seen everyone makes a big deal about it, but I prefer making vanilla hacks (minus the custom palettes and map16). I know this sounds like a stupid question but I'm actually being serious.

Well, isn't wrong making vanilla hacks as long you have a decent level/OW design, no cutoffs, good placement of enemies, fair difficulty and no major glitches.

If you like to make vanilla levels just do it, dont be afraid of the new tools and characteristics because its not enough to make a good hack.

That's basically the qualities I have in the majority of my levels/OWs. I sometimes add custom music for a touch of originality, and usually the under-used music.

Make whatever the hell you want. It's more for you than anyone else, I would hope.

Yeah, I agree with the above post. If you want to make vanilla hacks, then sure go ahead. There are many people here who prefer playing vanilla hacks over chocolate/strawberry ones. Just because you aren't using custom resources doesn't mean your hack is bad - it's level design what matters the most.

I agree. There's nothing wrong to do a vanilla hacks. Well, it's a bit harder to make an interesting than with chocolate or choco-nilla/strawberry/whichever flavour it is. I'd blame a choco hack if it'd have bad level design. Remember this: When there's a decent choco hack and a greatly designed vanilla hack, most people would prefer that vanilla hack. The point of hacks is to make them interesting, fun to play and have a high replay value.

Look at a personally favorite Vanilla hack of mine: Every Level Iggy.
All vanilla. All great!

A vanilla hack can be good if the level design is awesome. And remember, you CAN edit boss battles in lunar magic. You can do whatever you want with Reznor, Lemmy, Wendy, and Boo. For the rest of the boss battles, you can only add sprites, but you can also do stuff like make things slippery, or make iggy's platform invisible by adding the Ludwig sprite. You can also add Reznor to the iggy battle (I suggest only adding 1 reznor).

Not at all, I actually find Vanilla hacks more fun than Chocolate hacks because there is a lot of potential in Vanilla hacks. Also, shouldn't this be in Hack Discussion?

Yep, this really fits in the Hack Discussion because isn't a question anymore, but an interesting discussion thread.
You can make vanilla hacks as well...

...But you can also add any small stuff you do want and make it really better. As custom music, this is great.

I advise creating your hack to be something you personally have fun with. Don't restrict yourself with categories of hacks like "vanilla" or "chocolate"-- you don't have to leave out every kind of custom feature just to fit the requirements for "vanilla" (unless it's for a level design contest), or add custom features all over the place just because a hack happens to be "chocolate". (Though if the way you prefer your hack to be happens to be the same thing as a vanilla hack, that's fine as well.)
Also, I agree, this belongs in Hack Discussion.
