Tip: Try making new backgrounds using SMW's existing graphics. For example, if you have a hilly BG, rearrange it to make it look more unique.

Okay, since there isn't enough SMK hacks out there (one notable one...), I decided to make a complete hack of the game. However, I'm stuck with one thing, I can't find any ROM maps with the palette data. Does anyone know the palette data for the eight characters?
The easiest things to do might be opening the ROM in yy-chr and changing the palettes like that. It might also be a good idea to make a save state and open it in yy-chr to see what your changing. And none of the SMK editors out there let you change the palettes?

I haven't actually tried any of the editors yet, as they're all track editors, and I wanted to change the characters first. How would I be able to change palettes in YY-CHR to the ROM?

EDIT: Apparantly Epic Edit added a palette editor recently... Can't believe I was so herpa derp. Ah well, I guess I'll change this to my hack thread when I get some notable progress done.

EDIT 2: Oh, of course it would have to be a track palette editor...

First open the ROM in YY-CHR. Then change the format to "4bpp SNES" (if it already didn't do it for you). Then open the ROM in ZSNES and make a save state in the screen where you choose a character. Then open the save state in YY-CHR. Then scroll down until you see the characters (I'm not sure if SMK's GFX are compressed). Once you see them give them the right colors (by clicking on each palette row until the colors are right). Then just use the tools on the right to draw over them.

I'm pretty sure that just draws over them using the pre-existing palettes. Could you use that to change the palettes in the ROM and not just the viewer?
So are you trying to do something like this?

Yep, I need to change the palettes in-game.
Well that was done with YY-CHR. (But you need to use the palettes in the game, no custom ones). If you do want custom ones, you'll need to find where the palettes are in the ROM and edit them.

I was afraid of that...I need a complete different palette.
Palettes 8-11 are for characters. There are only four because each one is shared by two characters. Each track type has a copy of these palettes:

Palette 8: Bowser/Yoshi
Palette 9: Mario/Toad
Palette 10: Luigi/Koopa Troopa
Palette 11: Princess/Donkey Kong Jr.

The title screen, character select, results screen, and trophy sequence palettes aren't included in the editor, though...
