I'm just curious as to how you, the SMWC Community;

1. Got started on SMW Rom hacking

2. Why do you continue to rom hack?

For me personally:
1. It's kinda funny. I was looking up Cave Story OST, when I came across a video of SMW, called Running hell. I started looking through the rest of his levels, and thought what he did was neat, and started myself.

2. Cause it's fun, and I enjoy making stuff.
1. Someday I said to myself: "wow, will be great to edit SMW!" So with the help of the Google I find the Lunar Magic, and started hacking as a newbie ^w^;

2. Because It's funny, and I have a lot of inspiration and I do want to put all of it in a real hack. Also I do want to moderate SMWC.
1. I started hacking "Sonic the Hedgehog" for SEGA Genesis but I give up, then I saw a SMW hack video called "Windows 95" I can remember the full name, I became interested and registered.

In fact, today I can see that Genesis' ASM is almost the same as SNES' ASM except it's a lot limited.

2. It's because I always learn something, I get inspired and is good for creativity.

1. Saw some old SMW hacking videos on YouTube, and found a link to FuSoYa's Niche, where I found Lunar Magic. Eventually, I got ZSNES, and I don't remember why, but it took me another month before I found out I needed an actual SMW ROM. I finally opened it with Lunar Magic, was very happy, and started hacking.

2. It's a fun hobby, and I like it. I've actually thought about quitting, due to lack of motivation, but I figured I'd set a couple of goals I want to reach before quitting(one of which I've already done). It's been working nicely so far. :P
1. Well after playing Mario Gives up, It influence me to try hacking myself.

2. I continue because I actually really enjoy making levels. When I don't have anything to do, hacking is a great way to kill time (And have fun while doing it).
When I started watching LPs somewhere back in 2009, I relatively fastly found out about the german LPer TheEmero, who was pretty much only playing SMW hacks back then. At first I was like "Oh man, it sure must be hard to program your own levels", and didn't even bother searching for an SMW editor, as I was assuming to create a hack you'd essentially have to open the game in notepad and rewrite it.
Later I found a link to SMWC somewhere and after considering for a while whether it was worth risking to be imprisoned for illegally downloading an SMW ROM I started hacking.

I'm still hacking SMW because I have a lot of fun creating levels when I'm motivated (which I unfortunately am not very often) and because you don't have to know any programming for it.

1- After seeing a lot of hacks (some of them were bad looking), I decided to try to hack SMW myself.
2- Because it's fun, and I do like to make creative levels. No matter if it is kaizo or non-kaizo, I can think up of some ways to create levels for them.
I'm sure I've told this story at least one time before:
1) In 2006 and the years following, I watched numerous videos on YouTube of SMW hacks and I was more interested in watching than playing. Lunar Magic did not exist on a Mac yet (to my knowledge) and I was using a Mac until sometime in 2010. Also, back then, trying hacks and making them had not crossed my mind that much. In spring 2010 (shortly after we switched over to Windows) I played Eversion and for some reason I couldn't get the level editor to work, so Lunar Magic helped satisfy my level editing needs.
Another factor that got me started ROM hacking was worldpeace's inactivity. I'm a fan of his Kaizo videos and when he would go a long time without posting any videos, I would get somewhat bored. I figured if I make my own levels and try to make the design as creative as possible, that could help fill the hole.
2) I continue to ROM hack because it's fun to see how creative I can get given the game's resources, and sometimes beyond. There are lots of ideas I use in my Kaizo hacks that many viewers would not have thought of on their own (some that even worldpeace would gasp in amazement at) and probably many more wacky ideas that I will use in the future. I also make levels with the majority of the reason to show a video (generally the Kaizo levels). No matter how many songs you have on your iTunes, you will probably get tired of them eventually if you keep on listening to those same songs, so getting more songs can help keep the experience fresh and exciting. That's the way it is with videos on my YouTube channel, and possibly one reason I upload more often than the average user.
1. October 2006, I had started a Deviantart account in order to make my own custom levels of Super Mario World on Paint. Since The Spriter's Resource was much younger, and didn't have as many sprites as it does now, I would scour the internet to find screen shots from Super Mario World to cut and use for my own levels. I had found a link to ACMLM's Board, which was certainly a bit helpful in the sprites, but it had also piqued my interest in how the levels were made. This lead to my discovery of Fusoya's Niche, and after a bit of struggle in finding out how exactly to get the whole thing to work, I finally managed to first open up a ROM sometime in March 2007. The rest, as they say, is history.

2. While I don't ROM hack nearly as often as I used to, I still look through my Aether hack and polish it up a bit. Since I study architecture, I think it's helpful to be able to represent architectural ideas through game design. It's also very amusing, and it's immensely flattering to see people enjoy my hack, whether through reviews or through Let's Plays.

EDIT: Level up to Paragloomba!

1: I was playing the original SMW and I couldn't find the secret exit on Chocolate Island 2, so I searched for it in YouTube and I eventually found a video about it. In the process, I noticed some videos about custom SMW levels, so I decided to watch some of them; I thought it would be nice to play some of these levels, so I made some research and I found a Lunar IPS tutorial (which by the way had a link to this site), the maker of the video used Brutal Mario as an example so I decided to try it out. After I beat Brutal Mario I downloaded Lunar Magic and started hacking.

2: Because I never released a full hack. Besides, I enjoy making new levels. Although I think I'll move and start hacking another game (probably YI) once I finish remaking the levels for m2w2v.
It's like a tradition to start one of these threads every few months.
Like this and many more in the past.

Anyways, I got into it because I wanted to make my own level since I was five or four years old. when I was fifteen I located Lunar Magic by complete accident and was amazed that I could finally fulfill my dream. Much like a ton of other people.
ahah sorry bout that, it's just i haven't seen a thread like this (probably missed it) since I joined the site, which was about 4 years ago if I remember. lol

anyway, yea, I would love to that "REDTOONLINK" for inspiring me to hack.
I met up with the reghrhre man on another forum. He talked about hacks and stuff so I played a few. I was stupid and thought that you needed Lunar Magic to actually play the hacks, so I downloaded that. Later, I figured that since I already have LM I might as well make a few vanilla levels. Eventually I learned how to insert ExGFX, Sprites, and music, and although I'm going at a rate of about 1 level per month, I'm hoping to make more time for hacking so I can finally get cracking on a hack. But yeah this was all in like September or something so I'm still pretty new to this.
I originally looked for a way to edit the original Super Mario Bros. and found my way here. The only reason I edit Super Mario World is to create one of the most challenging hacks I can muster, without crossing the line to kaizo, of course.

>figured it out
and then everyone died. happly ever after

2. Users of smwc, my interweb friends ive made, desire to make something tangeable, inspritation, talking to people.:D
1. Imagination. Mostly sketching on a big paper with some unidentified objects and small levels. And I found Lunar Magic, then started to try it out.

2. I haven't submitted a full hack. And I really want to submit two hacks or something.
1. I started to hack SMW because I saw videos of custom SMW levels, and I wanted to make a few myself.

2. I continue to hack SMW for two reasons. The first is that I enjoy thinking up creative level ideas and then finding a way to implement those ideas. The other reason is because I enjoy watching others play the levels I've made.
1. well i saw Dr. Mario World Classic in 2005 and was like, "whoa, this is the future." although that hack is seriously dated at this point. it's from 2004. i didn't care. it looked fuckin' cool and i was into it. so eventually i discovered more about the community and how to hack myself.

2. honestly, i don't really know. i mean last year i was seriously burnt out. i figure at some point i'll get sick of it and move on. but every time i think i'm done, i see some video, or screenshot, or newly released hack and go, "damn, that is amazing." it inspires me to go do more, because you can always do more.
ProtonJonSa got me started. I was also inspired by Nico Nico Douga.
1. oh man. Uh, well actually now that I remember the first romhack video I saw was either Kaizo or Brutal Mario, like three or four years ago. I made nothing of it until I found ProtonJon while looking for videos of Superman 64. I found his romhacks and thought they were cool, so I started basic Rom Hacking (for me it was like kaizo and kind of poor quality). After I found raocow, I realized the quality of the hacks he played were muuuuuuch better, which in terms led me to learn GFX, YY-CHR, and how to insert custom sprites.

I actually have to thank UltraKirby for his tutorials on Lunar Magic, as that's where I learned all my stuff and things.

2. Actually I grow bored of a set idea for a whole hack, so I switch progress back and forth from my main hack (which is a normal hack, with some interesting GFX), to my Gimmick-like hack I'm working on (which means I can incorporate whole new ideas each level, whole new appearances and everything)

Also I got like two more hack ideas, one in basic production (getting ideas for GFX)
