Avatar Size Warning

In geneal, avatar widths are to be within 145 pixels, and lnegth is not to exceed something like 200 pixels (it has been awhile since I last checked).

I think it would be quite helpful if, when someone is trying to upload an avatar that is larger than allowed, they are brought to a screen saying:

Quote
Your avatar size is too large. Returning....

At times, people accidentally upload avatars that are too big. This often occurs when new users are creating accounts but have neglected to read either the rules or the blurb beside the Avatar URL field (yes, it happens).

Would anyone else see this as helpful?
The width limit is actually 150 pixels.
I'm pretty sure the avatar limits are generally not followed, by new and old users alike. I've even seen staff members not follow it. (correct me if i'm wrong)

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Especially when it comes to width, the table stretching would be noticeable if someone's avatar were too large.
Some sites I go on can automatically resize or crop avatars. I'm not sure if Kieran is up to it but if the problem becomes more apparent you can always count this as a solution.
The true size limit is 150 width, but I enforce 145 as that is what was stated in the announcement. 150 is too close to the limit for me, I must protect the integrity of my precious tables.

If anyone's avatar gets deleted for a 150px width it's just stupid since 150 doesn't stretch the tables AT ALL.

Fun fact, for the last two years, pretty much all my avatars have had a 150px width.
I am seriously considering returning to the 100x100 limit because people are discussing this way too much. Seriously, 100x100 is enough. So is 145x145. Shut the fuck up.
I motion that all avatars must have the dimensions of my current avatar.
Seconded.
150 pixels doesn't stretch tables, but do you really need the extra 5 pixels? If it says 145x145, there's no point in making it 150 pixels wide just to be defiant. Just follow the set limits. Although I do agree it's a bad idea to implement the warning because if you find a picture that's 146 pixels wide and you want to use it, then that's fine. It's unnecessary work to go cut off that extra pixel of width and reupload it just because the script won't accept it.

You pretty much contradicted yourself. According to your own logic, the 146px avatar doesn't really need that extra pixel.
Guys, the point of this thread isn't to discuss how big avatars are. That's Kieran's decision to make, and he's clearly already made it.

The point here is to determine if a warning that one's avatar is too large would be helpful.
If you can make a warning, you can make it outright impossible. Is there a point to having avatars past 150 pixels in width?
Resizing avatars bigger than the current limit (the specifics of which is actually not relevant to this idea) doesn't sound that difficult and the resulting picture can be placed in the user's files.

Unless of course that would put them over their "my files" upload limit, in which case they don't have an avatar. :P
In order to make it possible to enforce a certain size, I'd have to make it so that you upload your avatar rather than just provide an URL to it. I'm sure there would be outcries from people with fancy random/changing avatars.
1. When the user specifies an avatar, download it.
2. If the file is more than 100-or-whatever KB, reject.
3. If the dimensions are too large, reject.
4. If valid size, accept the risk that the content of the relevant URL changes.
5. If the request fails (isn't HTTP 2xx or image/*), give the user the option of uploading it or asking a staff member to review it. If this review system is too much effort, make it lead to sending a PM to SNN, or offer uploading only.

That should satisfy everyone.

And as such, the system is useless and a waste of time.
It would indeed be easy to bypass if you know what you're doing, but I believe most violators doesn't know that they're doing it wrong, and/or do it accidentally (maybe not knowing what a pixel is?), and would fix those problems if notified about them. (Example)

We could, of course, combine it with some CSS tricks, to catch the ones who do manage to get past the PHP filter.

It would be impossible to bypass, and since nobody likes scrollbars in their avatars, the violator should notice that we're not that easy to fool and go back to a legally sized avatar.
And even if they don't, it will at least protect our tables.

Edit: Very funny. I'll just add some lorem ipsum to get my post back.

But it's not like we ever really get any malicious violators. I understand why this whole deal is even an issue in the first place.
